MAJOR POLITICAL PARTIES IN SLOVAKIA
(June 2000, http://www.europeanforum.bot-consult.se/cup/slovakia) Most parties that existed in the 1994 elections still function at the moment, though the composition of several party factions in parliament has changed in the intervening years. The ideological division of the parties runs more along pro-Meciar and anti-Meciar lines than along political lines. The change in the electoral law by the former government regarding constituent parties has influenced the process of party formation, for instance in the establishment of the Slovak Democratic Coalition (SDK). Name of the party, orientation, leadership, structure
Slovak Democratic Coalition
Slovenská demokratická koalícia , SDK) - 42 Seats - Was initially established as a coalition of democratic forces against Meciar, and consists of the Democratic Union (DU), the Social Democratic Party of Slovakia (SDSS), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), the Green Party (SZS) and the Democratic Party (DS). The party has its origins in the Blue Coalition of the Democratic Party and the Christian Democratic Movement. Under pressure of changes in the electoral law, part of the joint electoral list was transformed into a single political party. Only the first 150 members of the joint list have formed the SDK, the old parties continue to exist. In a party that is composed of christian democrats and social democrats, there are obvious political tensions between all members. While initially the SDK achieved 30 percent ratings in the polls, by July 1998 it had lost around ten percent to Schuster's

Tories support Labour in Doncaster

All the chairs and Vice-Chair positions for the 2005/6 year have been divided between Labour the Tories and the Community Group. Also, it is down to the Tories and the Community Group that Mayor Winter was able to retain his position. This is the price the Liberal Democrats and the Independent Group were prepared to pay if we failed to bring back democracy to our town.
This power-game action was expected by the Tories who used their balance of power last year to gain more than their fair share of positions when negotiating with the opposition groups. Certain agreements could have been to the benefit of the Borough had they remained onside against Labour, but time after time they used their position in support of Labour. The underhanded actions of the Community Group highlighted the total self-interest in power of their leader, Martin Williams, who, originally, was firmly supportive in the Lib Dem idea to stand one candidate against Mayor Winter in order to remove him and the undemocratic system we have in Doncaster.
If in future, if you are thinking of voting Conservative in Doncaster, you might as well be voting Labour.

Mitigating Future Katrinas
We can't prevent hurricanes like Katrina from hitting America. But we can mitigate the disastrous aftermath of such storms. To accomplish this we need to have a firm and complete understanding of everything that led to the horrible results we witnessed in New Orleans and other cities on the Gulf. Republicans in Congress favor a so-called "bi-partisan" joint-House-Senate investigation committee. Democratic leaders insist they will not appoint any members to such a white-washing committee. They insist that only an independent commission, such as the 9/11 commission, can be trusted to do a good and useful job. "Mitigating Future Katrinas"

More Government Corruption
Headlines involving government corrution are becoming all too commonplace. We have to begin weeding out members of the government who have traded their responsability to serve the public and instead serve only lobbyists, special interest groups and their wealthy friends and connections, who are more than willing to buy access to government.

Life in the 1880's
Politics of the 1870s and 1880s Introduction Political activity in the Midwest was both highly partisan and rousingly participatory. Thousands turned out for political rallies and parades, sometimes clothed in cheap but colorful costumes provided by the parties and marching along with the bands and floats. Men and women sat for hours in the hot sun devouring details on the issues of the day, regardless of the fact that the parties differed little on these very issues. These rallies were as much social events as political gatherings. The political debate was actively carried on in the press. Newspaper circulation far exceeded the number of voters in most counties, indicating that many families subscribed to more than one paper. In 1886, the Midwest published 340 dailies and 2900 weeklies, totals that were almost exactly the same as the number of television and radio stations in the nation in the mid-1950s. These papers flourished because they were semiofficial party organs, and provided a direct route from the party operatives to the rank and file. The news was almost as biased as the editorials. Voters spoke of political loyalty in the same breath as religious affiliation. Most voted as their fathers had before them. A sample of thousands of interviews taken by directory makers in Illinois and Indiana in the mid-1870s showed that only 2 percent of men were without a party affiliation. Anyone uncomfortable with his party’s position would most likely not split his ticket and almost never switched parties. Instead, if he was really unhappy, he just stayed away from the polls on election day.

n. One of the two major political parties in the United States, owing its origin to a split in the Democratic-Republican Party under Andrew Jackson in 1828.
Encyclopedia
Democratic party, American political party; the oldest continuous political party in the United States. Origins in Jeffersonian Democracy When political alignments first emerged in George Washington's administration, opposing factions were led by Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson . In the basic disagreement over the nature and functions of government and of society, the Jeffersonians advocated a society based on the small farmer; they opposed strong centralized government and were suspicious of urban commercial interests. Their ideals—opposed to those of the Federalist party —came to be known as Jeffersonian democracy, based in large part on faith in the virtue and ability of the common man and the limitation of the powers of the federal government. This group of Anti-Federalists, who called themselves Republicans or Democratic Republicans (the name was not fixed as Democratic until 1828), supported many of the ideals of the French Revolution and opposed close relations with Great Britain.
