Radio Okapi, a Fondation Hirondelle Project
Enabling the People of the Congo
to Communicate by Richard A. D'Angelo A new shortwave broadcast station began operations in February 2002 from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Called Radio Okapi, the station is a joint project in the DRC by the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) and the Fondation Hirondelle, located in Switzerland. This DX Target will focus on the DRC, the Fondation Hirondelle (or Hirondelle Foundation) and, of course, the station, Radio Okapi. The Country The Democratic Republic of the Congo, located in central Africa, is one of the largest countries on the continent. French is the official language. Years of civil war and corruption have badly damaged the country's infrastructure. The DRC shares its borders with Angola, Zambia, Burundi, Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, the Central African Republic and the Republic of the Congo. The country's capital city is Kinshasa. Other important cities include Lubumbashi, Mbuji-Mayi and Kisangani. An international port is situated at Matadi on the Zaire River.

République Democratique du Congo, Congo Democratic Republic, former Zaire. Once a Belgian Colony after it was conquered by King Leopold II who appropriated for himself a region as large as Europe. In the so called Congo Free State he had the power of an Emperor, a power he didn't receive in his Kingdom Belgium. Today Congo is still very beautyful, but not happy. Peace is far away since Independence, the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, the rise and fall of Moise Tshombe, Joseph Mobutu and Laurent-Désiré Kabila.

SECRETARY-GENERAL HIGHLIGHTS REMAINING CHALLENGES
IN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO PEACE PROCESS
Following is the statement of Secretary-General Kofi Annanto today's meeting of the Security Council to examine the report of the Council mission to the Great Lakes region:
From the outset, I wish to pay tribute to the just-concluded Security Council mission to the Great Lakes region.  I believe this timely and important visit served to consolidate the recent momentum for peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and demonstrated the importance that the United Nations attaches to the peace process there.  I think we've heard an eloquent and comprehensive briefing from Ambassador Levitte who led the team.  By visiting not only the States signatories of the Lusaka Agreement, but also Burundi, the Security Council recognized the linkage between the conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi.  It is clear that we will have to work to ensure the implementation of both the Lusaka and the Arusha agreements, if we are to achieve peace throughout the region.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo a vast and impoverished country devastated by conflict and with virtually no infrastructure presents an immense operational, administrative and logistical challenge to any outside mission.  However, we are now faced with a genuine window of opportunity for peace and security in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and I think Ambassador Levitte described it very clearly.  An important signal has been the re-opening of the river network in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for humanitarian assistance and commercial exchanges between Kinshasa and Kisangani.  More specifically, there has been progress on disengagement, and the United Nations has been actively assisting the parties in implementing their commitments.  The United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) has deployed

NEW YORK, 30 May (UN Headquarters) Following is the statement of Secretary-General Kofi Annan to today's meeting of the Security Council to examine the report of the Council mission to the Great Lakes region: From the outset, I wish to pay tribute to the just-concluded Security Council mission to the Great Lakes region. I believe this timely and important visit served to consolidate the recent momentum for peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and demonstrated the importance that the United Nations attaches to the peace process there. It is clear that we will have to work to ensure the implementation of both the Lusaka and the Arusha agreements, if we are to achieve peace throughout the region. In the near future, the parties will be finalizing plans for the withdrawal of all foreign troops as well as for the disarmament, demobilization, reintegration, repatriation and resettlement of armed groups. This process will also present a major challenge to MONUC and the international community as a whole.
