"Congo - Nature and Culture in the Democratic Republic of Congo"
10 September 2004 click to enlarge On Thursday 9 September, the Director-General of UNESCO together with H.R.H. Prince Philippe of Belgium, Mr Z’Ahidi Ngoma, Vice-President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mr De Decker, Belgian Minister for Co-operation and Development, inaugurated the exhibition "CONGO - Nature and Culture in the Democratic Republic of Congo". Curated by the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Tervuren, Belgium), the exhibition presents a multi-themed exhibition to discover the links uniting humans and nature in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In his opening speech, the Director-General thanked the Belgian Government for their generous support of the event, which promotes a better understanding of "the inextricable links between culture and nature in the DRC". Recalling that the five natural sites in the DRC are all inscribed on both the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger, the Director-General expressed his wish that this exhibition and the events organized at UNESCO Headquarters until the 24 of September, such as the International Donors Conference scheduled the 16 and 17 September, will stimulate a "massive mobilisation to conserve this fragile heritage, which constitutes an immense potential for the sustainable development of the country".

In this Free State, the local population was brutalised in exchange for rubber, a growing market with the developement of rubber tires. Soil heavy in clay content is excavated for use in brick building. Clay is the element which makes the bricks hard after baking. Often the soil found in termite mounds is preferred as the termites build their mounds by bringing up clay rich soils from beneath the surface.
The moist soil is mixed with dried straw and then put in a brick press. Old motor oil is used to grease the press and facilitate removing the brick from the press.
Once out of the press the raw bricks are set out in the sun to dry. One can see how the bricks are stacked, allowing air to pass in between them in the drying process.

Congo Introduction Back to Top Congo, Democratic Republic of the or Congo-Kinshasa, nation in central Africa, a large nation of dense forests traversed by the powerful Congo River. valuable in natural resources, the nation is nonetheless economically stunted due to decades of misrule in the second half of the 20th century, under dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. The region was first united as the Congo Free State, a colony created by Belgian king Leopold II in the late 19th century. The colony was called the Belgian Congo from 1908 until 1960, when it gained freedom as the Republic of the Congo. Its name was changed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1964 and then to Zaire in 1971. Congo Provinces Back to Top

In 1998 the DRC also had a refugee population of about 240,300, many of whom were exiles from instability in Rwanda. The remainder were Burundians, Angolans, and Sudanese, all fleeing upheavals in their countries. Meanwhile, about 252,400 DRC citizens had taken refuge in neighboring countries.

Rumba Roots Most of the great Afropop styles have grown out of a joining of urban and rural ideas, of indigenous roots and foreign borrowings. The story of Congolese pop music provides a complex and powerful example. By the closing years of the Belgian Congo, the city of Leopoldville (today's Kinshasa) was a place where city boys plucked out highlife songs on box guitars, phonographs and radios played the latest mambo and son hits from Cuba, and people from deep in the Congo's remote, culturally rich interior came to seek opportunity. Pop bands mainly existed to entertain the white elite, and played imitations of foreign music. The Cuban music, with African (including Congolese) rhythmic ideas at its heart, was naturally familiar and attractive to local musicians and listeners. So when musicians in Leopoldville began to make electric pop music for themselves, that music provided an obvious starting point. Greek-run record labelsNgoma, Olympia, and Opikawere the first to produce local records during the 1940s. But by the time African labels, Loningisa, and later Veve, entered the game, something had happened to the music. The Cuban piano parts had been adapted to guitars, and in the process, the cycling, polyrhythmic qualities of traditional Congo music, especially that of the sanza hand piano, had changed the color of the guitar parts. Gradually, guitar would emerge as the dominant melodic and harmonic instrument in Congo bands. The biggest bands in the 1970s and 80s would typically feature three guitars, and sometimes as many as five, all playing different, interlocking parts.

    Terrain
The major physiographic element of the country is the vast Congo river basin (around 60% of the total area), which is covered by rain forests. From this basin there are elevations into all directions, which gradually become plateaux and mountains. The highest mountain range is to be found on the eastern border with Tanzania, Burundi, and Rwanda and includes the country's highest elevation, Mont Ngaliema (Mount Stanley), with 5,110 m. The Shaba or Katanga Mountains in the south-east reach heights of up to 1,500m and are rich in mineral resources, e.g. copper, uranium etc.
As the Congo river basin rates as the world's second-largest river system (the Amazon river basin being the largest), the country's water resources are vast. Most important rivers include the biggest northern tributary to the Congo, the Oubangui, that has its source in the north-western fringe area of the Congo basin. The mountain ranges in the south-west are commonly referred to as Highlands of Bié. The Kasai has its source here, the most important southern tributary of the Congo. River valleys are thickly overgrown by the rain forest.
