The newly elected governors from Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia and Delaware may be just out of the starting blocks, but they’ve wasted little time in grappling with an increasingly urgent question: How can technology help advance their agendas?
All four governors highlighted technology initiatives in their first state-of-the-state addresses. Montana’s governor even celebrated an Information Technology Day soon after taking office.
"Improvements in technology accounted for a lot of the gains in productivity and in our economy during the past decade," North Dakota Governor John Hoeven said. "Like private industry, we in government need to develop and utilize technology because it will be key to helping us prosper."
The governors are examining the myriad ways technology can enhance service to citizens and promote economic development — from finishing a high-speed, broadband network to helping recruit high-tech employees to offering an array of electronic government services.

About Olentangy's High Schools
Olentangy students are encouraged to establish a community of peers, expand their nonacademic interests, and the educational and social skills to be successful after graduation. The specialized needs and talents of students are met by programs and services such as applied and fine arts, post secondary enrollment options, career services, honors and AP courses, intervention assistance teams (IAT), peer tutoring, mentoring programs, CBI and others. Olentangy's high schools respond to the needs of students by constant curriculum review, the addition and adaptation of new courses, and the student-initiated organization of extracurricular clubs and sports teams. Various means of assessment both formal, such as proficiency intervention classes, and informal, such as a Student Council representative to the school board, lead to an ongoing awareness of student needs. Students have several opportunities to learn about and participate in multicultural experiences. Many students participate in a variety of diversity and cultural programs including foreign language clubs, foreign country travel and interaction with exchange students Course offerings include differing levels of the same subject, such as courses that are Advanced Placement (AP), College Preparatory (CP), honors, standard, and specialized resource/remedial courses through pupil services. Course prerequisites ensure that students are prepared to be successful in subsequent and upper level courses. Cooperation between departments such as math and science ensures that requisite skills are reinforced across disciplines.

The Delaware County Juvenile Court is the judicial agency responsible for determining questions of fact and law in cases where children between the ages of 10 and 18 are charged with violations of the Criminal Code. In addition to its judicial function, Juvenile Court has the administrative responsibility for developing and supervising services that address the rehabilitation of the delinquent youth, consistent with the protection of the community. The Balanced Approach to Restorative Justice is now mandated by law in Pennsylvania. The Juvenile Act has been amended to provide that, consistent with the protection of the public interest, its purpose is to provide for children committing delinquent acts programs of supervision, care and rehabilitation which provide balanced attention to the protection of the community, the imposition of accountability for offenses committed and the development of competencies to enable children to become responsible and productive members of the community. The Court has been working to develop services to address the diverse juvenile offender in his community. Our most recent implementation is a redesigned program to address the first offender. The Consent Decree Program, which began operation in November 1999, incorporates many of the BARJ principles. This program seeks to address victim awareness, accountability of the juvenile and competency development. Juveniles in the program attend classes, perform community service, make restitution and pay court costs, all with the focus of deterring further delinquent behavior.

CWLA and the Idea Public Charter School Partner to Host CWLA's First-Ever Youth Poetry Slam
Please join us at this celebration of youth creativity and self-expression, sponsored by the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel
March 1, 2005, Washington, DC
What:
In January 2004, the IDEA Public Charter School in Northeast Washington, D.C. was irrevocably impacted by two cases of suspected arson. To aid in the healing process, the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) introduced an innovative poetry curriculum to the 11th and 12th grade humanities students at IDEA. This unique project will culminate on the eve of the Poetry Slam as these impassioned and articulate youth speak out on the topics most relevant to their lives-ranging from overcoming gang and gun violence to issues of culture and diversity. Dr. Sylvia Spears and Ms. Erin Hazlett will facilitate a discussion following the Youth Poetry Slam. Refreshments will be served.
Dr. Spears is an Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Rhode Island. Additionally, she is an experienced trainer and presenter, specializing in cultural competence and diversity training. She holds a Master of Science Degree in Human Development and is a certified facilitator for the Franklin-Covey Leadership Center.
For the past nine years, Erin Hazlett has worked in the public and private sectors of elementary and middle school education as a classroom teacher, art teacher, teacher's aide, librarian, and ESL teacher. She currently teaches grades K-2 at the Compass Charter School in Rhode Island.
