Science Curriculum Framework
Standard One
Nature and Application of Science and Technology
The practice of science and the development of technology are critical pursuits of our society. These pursuits have involved diverse people throughout history and have led to continuous improvement in the quality of life and in our understanding of nature. Students will study the processes of scientific inquiry and technology development and the history and context within which these have been carried out. Grades K-3 Science as Inquiry By the end of the third grade students should know that: Develop a list of questions raised by the class about nature and the immediate surroundings. In a discussion, determine which questions the class has the capability of answering. The development of the answers involves observation and measurement, collection and sorting of samples, and taking things apart and putting them back together. 2. Scientists sometimes observe the same object or event and describe it differently. It is important for scientists to describe things as accurately as possible in order to compare their observations . 3. Scientists use a variety of instruments, some of them quite simple, in order to obtain additional information for answering questions about the natural world.
