You might use maps to locate an ancestral home or to find a reference to a town that no longer exists. In "Gazetteers: Identifying Research Localities," Ancestry 12 (4) (July/August 1994), David Thackery notes the following: "Genealogy is, among other things, an exercise in geography. Successful research often hinges on identifying the locality in which one's ancestors lived. Once we know the locality, we are in a position to consult the records and histories for the area in an effort to piece together the lives of our forebears." Pinpointing modern place-names can begin with Frank R. Abate, ed., Omni Gazetteer of the United State of America , 11 vols. (Detroit: Omnigraphics, 1991). The work is subtitled "Providing Name, Location, and Identification for Nearly 1,500,000 Populated Places and Geographic Features in the Fifty States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Territories." Modern towns can also be sought in

    Buying Maps
When I go shopping for maps, it goes something like this. Two weeks ago, in preparation for a weekend of mucking around in swamps for a wildlife census, I went into World of Maps and bought the following:
    • Three topographic maps , for the fieldwork itself; and A MapArt Ontario Road Atlas and folding maps of Barrie/Orillia and Peterborough, for getting there and back again.
But when some other people buy maps, they lay out some serious Raremaps.com via Iconomy Island of Lost Maps , which is perhaps not the most positive introduction to collecting old maps, but an interesting (and cautionary) tale all the same. submitting links on antique maps, map dealers or map collecting. Mapping Delaware
Moving from old Maryland maps to digital maps of Delaware, here is the Delaware Data MIL . Mike Mahaffie of the Delaware Office of State Planning Coordination University of Delaware , explains it: The Data MIL GIS community and spatial data users can carry out a continual update of the basic data layers that make up a digital base-map of the state. It also gives the general public browser-based access to up-to-date on-line topographic maps of Delaware.

GIS Day 2003 For the 5th year in a row, Delaware County celebrated the Geography Awareness Week and the GIS Day in Delaware, Ohio. On November 20 th over 330 students from Dempsey Middle school attended the GIS Day demonstrations and Map Gallery at the Dempsey Middle school in Delaware, Ohio. The Geography Awareness Week is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the American Association of Geographers (AAG), Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI), the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA), and the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS). Since 1987, the National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education of children. This event was intended to promote the understanding of geography in schools around the world. As a user of GIS technology Delaware County Auditor’s DALIS Project assisted the National Geographic Society, ESRI, AAG, URISA, and UCGIS in bringing this technology to Delaware County in the form of a 7 hour Open-House and a Map Gallery that illustrated how geography is part of our everyday lives. The afternoon session also included a Map Gallery and Live demonstrations. The Map Gallery included various maps from Delaware County’s different Government Entities using GIS Technology. Live demos of functional applications of this technology in Delaware County as well as elsewhere in the nation were also demonstrated.

Maps are found in a wide variety of materials throughout the library: as single sheets in a map collection, as government publications, as plates in atlases, as illustrations in books or journals. Digital maps are found on any of numerous web sites, in online research collections, or can be dynamically generated using online mapping services. Just as in written work, ethical scholarship demands that the source of information be cited.
When maps are used as part of a document, like maps you might include in a scholarly assignment or paper, the maps must be referenced (cited) in two places First
Brief inline citations allow the reader to refer to a reference list (or bibliography) to find out more information about the source of a map. All scholarly papers contain a reference list. This

Wyoming Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. WELCOME 1680's Pennsylvania Maps WELCOME
The founding counties of Pennsylvania - Philadelphia, Bucks, and Chester - were created in 1682. Penn created three counties in his new province in order to balance the existing three Delaware counties of New Castle, Kent, and Sussex that were created under the Duke of York's proprietorship. Chester County was formed from a portion of the existing New Castle County. Today, the city and county of Philadelphia are one and the same, the only such arrangement in the state. The county seat of Bucks County is Doylestown, and of Chester County, Westchester. In 1789 Delaware County along the river was carved out of Chester County with the odd result of placing the town of Chester (the Swedish Uplandt) in Delaware County.

ARTICLE SEVEN The Course of Education Reform
Politics As Usual By PETER REES
University of Delaware pdf The Experience of the Delaware Geographic Alliance Delaware is a small state, twenty minutes wide and two hours long. The only state that can claim to lie east of the Mason-Dixon line, it is a mix of the Tidewater South and South-East Pennsylvania culture areas. It has a strong rural base, exceeding most states in the proportion of its land under agriculture, yet it is also home to two major auto assembly plants, the chemical industry, and a large financial services center. Its population contains a melding of Protestant and Catholic, and Polish, Italian, African-American, Greek, and Hispanic ethnic groups. In other words, Delaware is very much a microcosm of the country. As such, it is a good place to examine the prospects for educational reform, in particular the growth of geography teaching and learning which is the goal of state geographic alliances across the country. FROM THE BEGINNING When the Delaware Geographic Alliance was formed in 1988 with a planning grant from the National Geographic Society, a geography instruction in Delaware was non-existent, buried as elsewhere in social studies curricula, taught primarily by history-trained teachers. A set of state-level social studies guidelines made occasional mention of maps, but the word "geography" was absent. Instead, the guidelines were dominated by economics, the result of active, energetic, and well-funded and politically connected
