Libraries and most of the original record repositories where you can do Delaware genealogical research are listed in this section. There are no admission charges except where noted. Copy charges are for an 8 1/2" x 11" size either single or double-page (e.g from a book), unless otherwise noted or if book is frail. Lap-top computers may be used.
The major repositories are listed first (see the front cover of the Delaware Genealogical Research Guide for index and abbreviations) and can be located on the maps on pages 22-23 of the Guide. The most complete genealogical collections are in Delaware Public Archives (DPA), Historical Society of Delaware (HSD), Latter-day Saints (LDS, by mail order) and University of Delaware (UD); but others with large holdings are Hagley (HG), Wilmington Public Library (WL), Dover Public Library (DPL), Winterthur (WNT) and Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP). In addition to their holdings shown below, each has a collection of other printed sources valuable when researching Delaware genealogy which is shown on p. 49-50 of the 1997 Delaware Genealogical Research Guide . Return visits should be made periodically to each repository as collections are continuously upgraded and new original records are found, especially in DSA and HSD. [ › = cents]

Special Collections Librarian Max Yela joined the Golda Meir Library staff in programs in Special Collections at the University of delaware Library,
http://www.uwm.edu/Libraries/special/splart01.htm
The following article appeared in The Golda Meir Library Newsletter in the Spring 1995 issue. Max Yela Brings Experience, Vision to Special Collections Special Collections Librarian Max Yela joined the Golda Meir Library staff in September 1994. Before coming to UWM, Max spent nine years as coordinator of public services and exhibition programs in Special Collections at the University of Delaware Library, and he brings broad special collections experience to his new position. Max became interested in library science and the uses of primary research materials as an undergraduate at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where he received his degree in history, with minors in art history and classical civilizations. He earned his Master of Science in Library and Information Science from Simmons College, Boston, where he focused his course work on archives and special collections, and worked as a graduate assistant in the Simmons College Archives. Following graduate school, Max accepted a year-long minority internship at the University of Delaware Library, during which time he worked on the inaugural exhibition for the library's new Special Collection Exhibition Gallery. He then accepted a permanent position in the Special Collections Department. During his time at Delaware, Max built expertise in exhibition production, security and preservation, outreach for special collections, and public service for rare books and manuscripts, In seeking the position at the Golda Meir Library, he was especially attracted to the prospects of collection building and providing leadership for a special collections program (not to mention the prospect of returning to a cooler, snowier climate). Max was particularly pleased that Special Collections at UWM forms part of the larger Archives and Special Collections Department, ensuring that he would retain a connection to archival and manuscript collections.

Subject: ALMS bylaws In response to Carol Chamberlain's request for comments on changes to the ALMS bylaws ("specific changes for consideration include adding references to the purchase, lease, or other methods of acquisition and adding a reference to all formats of library materials"). I support these changes! ALMS serves many purposes, but two important roles of the organization are to provide a sense of community for acquisition professionals and to help us interpret/communicate our professional activities and concerns to our colleagues. I support any changes to the bylaws which help to clarify what acquisitions is all about. As to changing the name of ALMS....I'm willing to consider any possibilities. Delaware Genealogy
A guide to Research in the Historical Society of Delaware Research Library Introduction Using the Library Collections Other Sources for Genealogical Research On Delaware Introduction T he history of a family over many generations lies buried in different sources and places. Like a good detective, the genealogist must search for the pieces of a family's past in those many sources such as books, documents, and manuscripts. The genealogist must also be patient and imaginative, for the search can take years and involve a string of clues that lead to new sources. The factsnames, dates, eventsthat a genealogist gathers through the years are like pieces of a puzzle. Gradually those pieces can be fitted together to make a picture of a family, its many members, and its unique history. D elaware's rich and complex colonial history offers genealogists a special challenge. Settled first by the Swedes in 1638, control of the area subsequently passed to the Dutch and then to the English, who ruled through James, Duke of York until he granted the land to William Penn in 1682. During those years Delaware was governed from a distance, so early colonial documents might be found in many places, including the archives of New York State and Pennsylvania, as well as those of Sweden, the Netherlands, and Great Britain. Many of those early records have been printed and can be found in books located in the library of The Historical Society of Delaware. A full search would require trips to many archives.

National History Day
National History Day (NHD), the nation’s premier history education program for junior and senior high school students. For twenty-five years, the National History Day program has had a dramatic impact on teaching and learning in thousands of classrooms across the country. Last year over one million students combined creativity and scholarship to create a History Day project. History Day engages students in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics related to an annual theme, while encouraging them to hone their creative talents to produce creative and innovative presentations. Students conduct extensive primary and secondary research in libraries, archives and museums, and they interview members of their communities. They analyze their topic’s historical significance and present their conclusions in dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries and research papers to public audiences across the country. The program culminates with the national competition each June.
