Ladies and Gentlemen: It is indeed a privilege to be here before you today, and I thank the D.H.C.A. for giving us the opportunity to share this research with so many people. The research project in which my husband and I are involved came about almost by accident. About twelve years ago we received a contract for an extremely ordinary archaeological survey, part of the highway planning process. The bit of land in question was the original tract which nestles into the northwest corner of the junction of St. Jones River and Mudstone Branch, and bounded today by Salisbury and Denney's Roads. As I was the person in our firm who did not have a project currently on my desk, it became my job to handle this research. Besides some rather ordinary archaeological survey, I did a pretty thorough documentary history of this plot, and of the people who lived on it. Jolley's Neck, as the property was called, was the home of William Handsor, a prosperous farmer who for all intents and purposes was exactly like all the other prosperous farmers who settled on fertile land at or near the headwaters of Kent County's navigable streams in the early years of the eighteenth century. As I began this research, I had absolutely no indication that Handsor was in any way different or unlike his neighbors.

These Facts For Kids sections are being added in response to the many emails we've been receiving from young people looking for information about the Miamis for school or home-schooling reports. We encourage students, especially older kids, to look through our main Miami language and culture pages for more in-depth information about the tribe, but here are some straightforward answers to the questions we are most often asked by children, with Miami pictures and links we believe are especially suitable for all ages.
Where did the name "Miami" come from? Does the tribe have any relationship to the city in Florida? It comes from their native word Myaamia, which means "allies." The Miami tribe are not related to the city in Florida (whose name comes from the Seminole languages, completely different from Miami). However, Maumee, Ohio is named after the Miami people, and so is Miami University.
Where do the Miamis live?

LEGENDS OF THE DELAWARE INDIANS
AND PICTURE WRITING
by Richard C. Adams, ed. by Deborah Nichols
Legends of the Delaware Indians and Picture
Writing was originally published in 1905, and this
collection of Lenape (Delaware) legends has long
been sought both by scholars and individuals who
cherish the lessons these tales impart.
Stories such as "The Little Boy and the Bears"
teach the importance of keeping a promise, and
why we should say only what we mean. This book also introduces the richness of the original Delaware language to English speakers. Four of these legends have been retranslated into the Delaware language by native Delaware speakers. Richard C. Adams (1864-1921), a Delaware, sought to preserve the vanishing culture and traditions of his people through his writings. 128 pages, Hardbound. Catalog no. 503-080. . . One can find plenty of web sites which maintain a calendar of pow wows. The difficulty is that the job can be so overwhelming, since there is no central database, they must rely on organizers and participants to submit updated information. As a result, most listings are incomplete or outdated. By limiting this page to Maryland and Washington, DC, I hope to stay as current as possible by using a 12-month rolling www.BrokenClaw.com Maryland has no federally recognized tribes. Neither does the State of Maryland currently provide any such official designation. Nevertheless, there are several communities of indigenous people who maintain an identity, including the Piscataway, the Nause-Waiwash, the Lenape, and the Lumbee. These events are inter-tribal celebrations, intended to bring together all descendants of America's native people with those who wish to learn and share the experience. Incidentally, in March, 2002, the Maryland House of Representatives passed House Bill 342 which would provide for Maryland Indians to apply to the Commission on Indian Affairs for official state recognition. Although it passed the House by a majority of 128-7, Governor Glendenning vetoed the bill. He cited his concern that such provisions would open the door for Indian casinos within Maryland. 2005 Calendar Aug 26-28 Baltimore Pow-Wow
