11th Annual Where-In Day
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1999
Fellow Teachers of Geography, The students of Redding Intermediate School invite you to join in the 11th Annual International Where-In. In choosing the clothing we wear we make a statement about ourself. Commemorate Geography Awareness Week and raise awareness of the students' world community connections. How? Ask the students and staff of your building to wear a "GEOGRAPHY" T-shirt or sweat shirt. A geography T-shirt or sweat shirt is one that has either a map or a place name on it. If the place name can be found on a map, any map, it counts. Count the number of student and adult participants. Email us and let us know: Your name:
Your school name:
Your school address: Total number of participants: More than 78,000 students and adults wore their geography to school in the 1998 Where-In. Have a fun activity and help us reach our goal of 80,000 "geographers" celebrating Geography Awareness Week! Please reply to the Delaware Geographic Alliance: mataylor@udel.edu

The above map is historically skewed, in that boundaries follow the most modern studies when possible, but where current information is not available the boundaries must often reflect the 1939 LAMSAS data. At certain points the modern and older studies clearly conflict: Schuylkill County with its consistent monophthongization would have been better classified with the Lehigh Valley and Reading in 1939; today, its acceptance of the low back merger shows that it clearly belongs to the Anthracite region.

Welcome to the Department of Geography and Urban Studies website. This is a dynamic interdisciplinary department that offers outstanding undergraduate and graduate curricula that help students acquire the skills, knowledge, and competencies to make them competitive for the current job market and for advanced study in a variety of disciplines. We are the only Department of Geography and Urban Studies in a research university in the United States. The Department currently offers a B.A. in Geography and Urban Studies, an M.A. in Geography, and an M.A. in Urban Studies. The Department provides students with an understanding of the foundations of geography and urban studies, critical thinking skills, integrative research experiences, and opportunities for community organizational practice. The curriculum focuses on instruction related to understanding the socio-spatial processes of urban development in a global context and on how social, environmental, and technological change is shaped, experienced, and responded to by diverse groups of people. Our courses examine a wide range of important topics and issues such as poverty, employment, and housing in the city, community health issues, international urbanization, land use policy, geographic information technologies, and nature and society.

GIS Day 2003 For the 5th year in a row, Delaware County celebrated the Geography Awareness Week and the GIS Day in Delaware, Ohio. On November 20 th over 330 students from Dempsey Middle school attended the GIS Day demonstrations and Map Gallery at the Dempsey Middle school in Delaware, Ohio. The Geography Awareness Week is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the American Association of Geographers (AAG), Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI), the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA), and the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS). Since 1987, the National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education of children. This event was intended to promote the understanding of geography in schools around the world. As a user of GIS technology Delaware County Auditor’s DALIS Project assisted the National Geographic Society, ESRI, AAG, URISA, and UCGIS in bringing this technology to Delaware County in the form of a 7 hour Open-House and a Map Gallery that illustrated how geography is part of our everyday lives. The afternoon session also included a Map Gallery and Live demonstrations. The Map Gallery included various maps from Delaware County’s different Government Entities using GIS Technology. Live demos of functional applications of this technology in Delaware County as well as elsewhere in the nation were also demonstrated.

Article about the trails collaboration in the Delaware (Ohio) Gazette Friday November 22, 2002.

Urban greenways and recreational paths have become a vital part of the development plans of many cities, offering an alternative means of transportation as well as recreational opportunities and the green, open spaces that many people want in their neighborhoods. The City Of Delaware (Ohio) Recreation Department, community members, and students and faculty in the Ohio Wesleyan University Department of Geology and Geography have collaborated to develop a detailed proposal for a recreational path system for the City of Delaware. The project involves researching, mapping, and analyzing (using Geographic Information Systems and GPS) a system of bicycle paths that connect neighborhoods, schools, commercial areas, and recreational facilities throughout the city. The City of Delaware Recreational Trails Project has benefited all involved: students are learning GIS and mapping technologies in a 'real-world' application, as well as learning about the trails and urban planning process in general. City residents have received technical and research assistance from OWU faculty and students, enabling them to complete their vision for a comprehensive system of Recreational Trails in the City of Delaware. Finally, the City of Delaware has gained a detailed plan for a project seen as having a very important and positive impact on the quality of life in the City of Delaware.

high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
  • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
  • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
  • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
  • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.
