Teachers explore world geography from the inside out 4:10 p.m., June 27, 2003This past week, a group of Delaware teachers enrolled in the Geography Institute for Teachers, watched the world unfold before their eyes. A sailcloth Earth globe, divided into 24 panels, each representing a time zone, lay on the floor of the Pearson Hall Gymnasium, then was attached to a fan and in a matter of minutes was inflated to 19 feet in diameter.
Geography Institute for Teachers participants get a close-up look at the inflatable globe, which is 19 feet in diameter. The group investigated different geographical environments in all three counties of the state, Taylor said. Based at the Virden Center for part of the time, the teachers visited Cape Henlopen to learn how dunes were created and about changes in the coastline. They also studied the changing landscape of Sussex County, brought about by natural causes and human activities. Another field trip was to Trap Pond where the teachers boarded pontoon boats to learn about the cypress swamp. New Castle County field trips involved the rivers and the historically disputed corner where Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland meet.

Delaware's Hundreds Delaware's counties are divided up into hundreds. The origin of this English term is obscure, but one possible explanation is that a hundred is the area from which 100 soldiers could be raised. The term was first used in Delaware in the 1680s; the first mention in a law is in 1690. Other colonies used the term in their early years, but Delaware is the only state to retain it. The hundred is similar to a township in many states or to a town in New England. It used to be the basis for state representative districts and local officials. Today the term has very little political relevance but is used as an indicator of location. Some hundreds date from the late 1600s, but there have been changes and subdivisions over the years. Delaware's Boundaries Conflicting claims of ownership between Maryland and Delaware kept Delaware's boundaries uncertain during most of the colonial period and led to highly geometric dividing lines on the north, south, and west. North Northern Boundary: The Twelve-Mile Circle The northern boundary marks the division between the two separate land grants to William Penn. It is a circle with a twelve-mile radius, with the center of the circle in the center of the town of New Castle. In 1750, the center of the circle was fixed at the coupola of the courthouse in New Castle. South Southern Boundary: The Transpeninsular Line In 1751, a line was surveyed straight across the Delmarva Peninsula beginning at what they called Cape Henelopen, which was to be the southern boundary of Delaware. The surveyors, however, actually began at Fenwick Island, fifteen miles south of what is today Cape Henelopen. West In 1760, the midpoint of the tranpeninsular line was accepted as the beginning of Delaware's western boundary with Maryland. In 1764, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed the boundary line north from that point. Mason and Dixon also verified the transpeninsular line. The
