What are the Regional Resource Centers?
The six Regional Resource Centers (RRCs) are specifically funded to assist state education agencies in the systemic improvement of education programs, practices, and policies that affect children and youth with disabilities. The RRCs help states and U.S. jurisdictions find integrated solutions for systemic reform, offering consultation, information services, technical assistance, training, and product development. The beneficiaries of the RRCs' work are children and youth with disabilities, and the families and professionals associated with them.

Toolkit for New Medical Writers
By the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Medical Writers Association Contents Opportunities in Medical Writing top Medical writing is a great career! The work is interesting and often lucrative, and the demand for medical writers is high. Few people start out to be medical writers; most of us fall into it. Some of us have scientific or medical degrees (e.g., MD, PharmD, PhD in a scientific field) and have worked in the field (e.g., as an academic, bench scientist, physician, pharmacist) or in administration and somehow find ourselves doing medical communications work. Some of us have Journalism or English degrees, work in communications, and end up writing about health and medicine. There are two basic types of medical writer: scientific and non-scientific or marketing. In general, scientific medical writers have advanced science-based degrees (science, medicine, pharmacy, etc.) and often learn about writing by becoming a medical writer. Marketing medical writers have a journalism or English degree and often learn about medicine by becoming a medical writer. Scientific medical writers generally do more scientific/technical writing for professional audiences. Marketing medical writers do marketing-oriented writing, often for consumers or lay audiences.

A more detailed fact sheet from the U.S. Department of Education describes the proposed compensation for private school families this way: "Meeting Needs for All Students. Communities in Louisiana significantly impacted by the hurricane had an above-average number of children enrolled in private schools 61,000 students of the over 187,000 total in four severely impacted parishes. These significantly impacted Louisiana communities averaged 32% of students attending private K-12 schools much higher than the 11% national average of private school students.
  • In recognition of the fact that many families who have been displaced by the hurricane have already chosen to enroll their children in private schools, the Department of Education is proposing up to $488 million to compensate families for the costs associated with attending these private schools. This emergency compensation would be in an amount up to 90% of the state’s average per pupil expenditure through the 2005-06 school year, with a maximum annual payment of $7,500 per child. These funds will also be subject to appropriate financial accountability measures."

Financing Assistive Technology:
AT Purchased for Students Receiving Special Eduction Services Can Be Used to Facilitate Transition into Adult Services and Productive Adult Life
by Steve Mendelsohn, Esq. and Susan Goodman, Esq. Transition from school to work or other post-secondary education activities has long been a vexing problem for the disability community. Both the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the federal Vocational Rehabilitation Act (VR) provide for cooperation between the education and rehabilitation systems in the planning of transition from educational to adult services, including post-secondary education. However, practical experience indicates that implementation of this intended cooperation has been limited and difficult. One area where the transition problem has been especially apparent is that of assistive technology (AT). Students transitioning from education programs have often been faced with the need to give up vital AT devices and services and to await provision of replacement devices and services by the rehabilitation system. A long interval without technology results in loss of employment opportunities or opportunities for maximum integration in a variety of activities. The goals of successful transition would be better achieved if students whose technology was relevant to their post school goals could retain and use devices and services without interruption during the transition period. The goals of coordination and cost effectiveness would also be better served, in many cases, if such continuity was possible.

The National Center on Education , Disability and Juvenile Justice SPECIAL REPORT Improving Education Services for Students in Detention and Confinement Facilities
I. Introduction

Approximately 90,000 young people are now in custody in public and private juvenile correctional facilities in the United States. Those incarcerated are disproportionately male, African-American, poor, and have significant learning and/or emotional problems that entitle them to special education services. The most common disabling conditions among juvenile offenders are developmental and learning disabilities as well as emotional or behavioral disorders. Many juveniles with disabilities in detention do not receive the educational services to which they are entitled.
Studies document the failure of juvenile correctional institutions to provide adequate educational services to young people with disabilities. Ineffective governance of education programs in juvenile corrections, the mobility of adjudicated young people, and poorly developed links between public schools and institutional settings contribute to the academic problems of incarcerated young people.
