Since 2001, the Administration has:
  • Fought the War on Terror on the offensive; Removed threats to our security in Afghanistan and Iraq liberating nearly 50 million people in these countries; Provided pay raises to our servicemen and women of more than 21 percent and expanded the use of targeted pays and bonuses; Launched a transformational and joint training program improving readiness rates; Increased research and development funding by 56 percent; Improved the quality of housing for military personnel and their families through privatization and new construction; and Doubled investments in missile defense systems, deploying the first ever land and sea-based system. Advances our ongoing efforts in the Global War on Terror; Provides $401.7 billion for the Department's base budget, an annual increase of seven percent, for a total increase in defense spending of 35 percent since 2001; Makes measurable strides in transforming the Department to meet new threats; and Continues improvements in the quality of life for our military personnel and their families.

Highlights of 2002 Funding To signal to our servicemen and women our renewed respect, the President:
  • Provides an additional $1.4 billion for military compensation to improve quality of life and reenlistment and retention of military personnel. Increases, by $400 million, funding to improve the quality of housing for military personnel and their families and to decrease out-of-pocket housing-related expenses. Funds new and expanded benefits for our over-65 military retirees.
To emphasize programs that provide our military forces' information superiority, stealth, speed, precision, agility, mobility, and lethality in the future, the President will propose a $2.6 billion initiative in research and development for missile defense alternatives and new technologies to support the transformation of U.S. military capabilities.

Public information about the defense Domestic Violence Task Force that was established by The National defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2000, Public Law 10665.  The Task Force is comprised of 24 members all of whom were appointed by the Secretary of defense.  Half of the members are senior military and civilian personnel from the department of defense and half represent subject matter experts from the private sector, department of Justice and the department of Health and Human Services.

The Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office will hold the 2005 annual briefings for families of Americans missing from the Korea/Cold War October 26-28. The dates of the briefings were moved from May to October due to a change made by the hotel. At the briefings family members will be told about U.S. government efforts in the last year to seek the fullest possible accounting for America's missing. This year the agenda has been expanded by one day to afford additional opportunities for families to review case files, ask questions, and talk with government officials.

North Korea
Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for POW/Missing Personnel Affairs Jerry D. Jennings has concluded key meetings in China where he laid out U.S. requests for more cooperation in gaining access to archival material from the Korean War. He also thanked officials in Dandong, China for their assistance in the recovery effort which led to the identification of the remains of USAF Captain Troy G. Cope. On May 25, 2005 recovery efforts were temporarily suspended in North Korea.
