Defense Department raises prices of Viagra, Cialis for military men
By Drew Brown
Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON- Military retirees will soon have to pay more for two popular erectile-dysfunction drugs, the Pentagon has decided. Beginning Oct. 12, men who have prescriptions filled outside of a military pharmacy will have to pay $22 for a 30- to 90-day supply of Viagra and Cialis, according to a July 18 ruling by the Defense Department's Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Retirees previously paid $9 for the drugs. Co-pays for Levitra, another popular erectile-dysfunction drug, will remain at $9 for a prescription. Active-duty males will still pay nothing if the prescription is deemed a "medical necessity," according to Navy Capt. Patricia L. Buss, acting chief medical officer for TRICARE management activity. TRICARE is the military's health-care system, which treats 1.4 million uniformed service members and 7.7 million dependents and retirees.

03/31/05 10:25 AM PT Analysts say the Defense Department adoption of VoIP will undoubtedly be a boost to the public image of the technology, which got a somewhat rocky reception from some early adopters because of reliability issues and security concerns. "When you have a big-name, public adoption, there is a strong message sent about security and reliability," Gartner analyst Bob Hafner said.

UBC Team to Compete in U.S. Defense Department Robotic Challenge
By Michelle Cook UBC's Centre for Environmental Research in Minerals, Metals and Materials (CERM3) will participate in a U.S. Defense Department competition designed to accelerate research and development in autonomous ground vehicle technology to help save lives on the battlefield. “...robot, an SUV covered in maple leaves, ready for hardware testing by mid-December, with a fully autonomous system in place by mid-February.” The DARPA Grand Challenge 2005 will take place in the Mojave Desert on October 8, 2005. The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is offering a $2 million prize to the vehicle that completes the course in the fastest time within a 10-hour period. Called Team Thunderbird, the UBC group is expected to be the only Canadian competitor in next year's challenge. The team expects to have its robot, an SUV covered in maple leaves, ready for hardware testing by mid-December, with a fully autonomous system in place by mid-February. "Someday soon, robotics technology will allow us to accomplish tasks that today place humans at risk," says team leader Andrew Lyon. "Whether the application is military or civilian such as mining, forestry, search and rescue, or fire-fighting, robotics can help prevent human injury or death. Team Thunderbird is excited to be able to put together a Canadian team that can contribute to this effort and develop the technical innovations that will help us win the prize."
