Briefing on New Defense Department Internet Protocol
http://www.defenselink.mil/photos/Jun2003/030613-D-9880W-063.html Whitman: Same faces! Thank you for joining us for our second briefing of the morning. I'd like to kind of reintroduce to you Mr. John Stenbit. He's the department's chief information officer. Many of you probably remember him as the ASD C3I. His title has recently changed a little bit when he became the assistant secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration. He continues to transform DoD's command and control systems, but this change reflects the creation of the new position, undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence. The purpose of today's briefing is to inform you about DoD's adoption of the next-generation Internet protocols and the implication that it has for war fighting, as well as for business managers.

Defense Department certifies Cisco VoIP

Cisco achieved JITC PBX2 certification, making its gear usable for switched calls. Company officials said Cisco is now working with the command to earn PBX1 certification, which would mean the Cisco VoIP infrastructure could be used in command and control environments.
The specific equipment that received certification includes Cisco Catalyst 3550, 4500 and 6500 switches; Cisco 2600 and 3700 gateways; and CallManager 3.3 call processing software.
San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco has emerged as a significant player in the technology that allows IP networks to carry voice communications. In July, Boeing Co. said it would use Cisco equipment to build a global VoIP network connecting more than 150,000 employees.

Defense Department Buys HP Servers To Design Weapons
The system, which will be installed this fall, uses 1,024 nodes in a cluster running Linux.
By Darrell Dunn Courtesy of InformationWeek
IBM may have taken the top spot in the most recent supercomputer rankings, but Hewlett-Packard on Monday announced that a cluster based on its ProLiant servers will be used by the U.S. Department of Defense for weapon systems design. The DoD system is based on a 1,024-node Cluster Platform 4000 from HP that uses ProLiant DL145 servers with Opteron processors from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. The cluster runs on a Linux operating system. The system is scheduled to be installed in September at the Aeronautical Systems Center Major Shared Resource Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. The clustered system is rated at 10-teraflops performance and is expected to be used to help the Defense Department accelerate research into weapons concepts, and speed simulation programs that enhance tests and evaluations of potential new weapons systems. In the most recent Top500 supercomputer rankings published in June, HP trailed only IBM in the number of supercomputer systems ranked among the 500 fastest in the world. IBM had 259 on the list, included the top two, while HP had 131 systems on the list.

Mar. 21, 2005—Exploring ways to extend military supply chain visibility, the U.S. Department of Defense recently tested a new generation of active (battery-powered) RFID tags with satellite-communication capabilities that enabled the tags to give their precise location even when in the most remote and inhospitable areas.
"The prototype tags function just as the current RFID tags that can be pinged [ read ] at ports, depots and distribution centers by interrogators, but they can also phone home," says Larry Loiacono, an information technology specialist at the Defense Distribution Center, headquartered in New Cumberland, Pa. Part of the DOD's Defense Logistics Agency, the DDC oversees 26 military distribution depots worldwide.

Defense Department goes on offense with RFID
By Ann Bednarz , Network World, 11/03/03 Companies that want to sell products to the Department of Defense soon will have to comply with a new condition of doing business with the multibillion-dollar buyer: wireless inventory tagging. The Defense Department recently announced it would require its suppliers to use wireless tags based on radio frequency identification ( RFID ) technology by January 2005. The policy calls for Defense Department suppliers to put RFID tags on the "lowest possible piece" - each part, case or pallet, for example - and pertains to all items except bulk commodities such as gravel. The goal is better inventory management through faster, hands-off processing. Advertisement:

Defense Department Personnel Impersonated State Department Officials in Guant¡namo Interrogations, FBI Documents Show
Submitted by Ted Kahl on May 28, 2005 - 2:43am. DictatorshipIsEasier.us Defense Department And CIA Are Unlawfully Withholding Photographs and Documents Concerning Torture Of Prisoners, ACLU Argues in Court From the ACLU: NEW YORK Documents released by the FBI state that Defense Department personnel impersonated State Department officials in interrogations at Guant¡namo Bay, the American Civil Liberties Union said today. "Defense Department interrogators, possibly on instructions from high-level officials, went to great lengths to avoid being held accountable for the use of unlawful interrogation methods," said Jameel Jaffer, a staff attorney with the ACLU. "Apparently Defense Department personnel were willing to use torture but they wanted others to be held responsible for it."

World originally posted November 29, 2004, updated Dec. 1, 7:30 a.m. 'They hate our policies, not our freedom' Pentagon report contains major criticisms of administration. by Tom Regan Late on the Wednesday afternoon before the Thanksgiving holiday, the US Defense Department confirmed the contents of a report by the Defense Science Board that is highly critical of the administration's efforts in the war on terror and in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The report had been originally placed on the DSB's website in early November. 'Muslims do not hate our freedom, but rather they hate our policies [the report says]. The overwhelming majority voice their objections to what they see as one-sided support in favor of Israel and against Palestinian rights, and the long-standing, even increasing, support for what Muslims collectively see as tyrannies, most notably Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Pakistan and the Gulf states. Thus, when American public diplomacy talks about bringing democracy to Islamic societies, this is seen as no more than self-serving hypocrisy.'

Your privacy is strictly respected. Jul 25 - Facing a court-imposed deadline to release photographs and video documenting numerous instances of torture and abuse at the now infamous US-run Abu Ghraib detention facility in Iraq, lawyers for the Department of Defense Thursday sent the court a letter stating their intention to file papers explaining why it will not adhere to the judge’s orders, civil liberties groups announced Friday. The legal brief explaining the reasoning behind the decision will be sealed, meaning most of the information will not be made public, the letter said. People who have seen the videos, including members of Congress and reporter Seymour Hersh, have reported they include scenes involving far worse abuses than have so far reached the public, including rape and lewd acts committed against and in front of prisoners. Friday’s deadline for the release of an estimated 100 photographs and four videos stems from a lawsuit filed after the Defense Department refused to fulfill Freedom of Information Act requests by several civil liberties and humanitarian groups. The original deadline was June 2, but a US Circuit Court judge granted the government an extension to allow more time for redactions.
