CEC is a consortium of teacher from 14 western states dedicated to improving the quality of education in the rural, western, United States, and particularly the quality of math and science Education. CEC uses Big Sky Telegraph as the hub of their telecommunications network that allows the participating teachers to stay in contact with their trainers and peers that they have met at the Workshops. Date: May 1994 Grade Level(s): Subject(s):
  • Social Studies/US Government
Description: In the team classroom, a modified open classroom setting for 55 third to fifth graders, in the fall of 1983 my two co-teachers and I decided to teach the concept that informed voters make conscientious voting decisions based on personal research, background information, and issues rather than a superficial knowledge of a candidate. We began the unit with an in-depth unit on government, focusing on the appropriate level for each grade as specified by our local curriculum (third grade - local city, fourth grade - state, and fifth grade - national). There were elections that year at all levels. Because these were introductory units at each level, we also included a geography strand.

The Great Energy Debate A Web of Resources Gold: From the Mine to You Natural Resources Extraction New World Influences on Asia Wild Horses: Public Property? Complete Index The Great Energy Debate Overview: Energy resources keep the lights on and the wheels turning around the world. The United States, which comprises only 5 percent of the world's population, consumes about 30 percent of the total energy. Traditionally, the United States has imported much of its energy resources from other countries. Oil from the Middle East is the largest energy import. This dependency places us in a highly vulnerable position, both economically and politically. Some of the ways suggested to lessen this dependency are to use more of our public lands for energy production and to invest in renewable energy. Both of these strategies are controversial because of the environmental, economic, political, and cultural implications associated with them. This lesson explores the controversial issues surrounding the energy debate in the United States. Students will research recent initiatives being taken in this area and analyze their implications. They will then assume the roles of pivotal stakeholders in this debate and testify to a mock congressional committee responsible for making decisions about

6th-grade Social Studies Don Donn; USA Background:
    • Students have already studied The Three Doctrines (Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism) and Legalism, and have some background.
    • Now, let's see if students can determine how and why an individual from each of these four disciplines might respond to the same problem.
Lesson: Directions: Students will imagine themselves to be, in turn, a follower of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Legalism.
Orally Presented Brief Review of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and Legalism:
  • Confucianism: Respect for family, hardwork and education
  • Taoism: Keeping your life simple
  • Buddhism: Respect for other property and all life
  • Legalism: All power to the legal ruler Orally presented problem: Based on what people believe is the right and proper thing to do, their behavior, or their response to a particular problem could be very different. From their point of view, they would be behaving in a good or proper manner. From your point of view, they might be behaving very oddly. Even if people behave in the same way, are they behaving that way for the same reason? If you don't understand another person's point of view, do you think you might misunderstand them? Could that lead to problems that might be completely unnecessary? Of course! It's important to try and understand other peoples points of view, and important for them to try and understand yours.

Tourism is becoming more and more important - especially for those learning English. Here is a two part lesson which focuses on the question of developing tourism as an industry in your local town. Students need to develop concepts, discuss local economic problems and solutions to those problems, think about possible negative impacts and finally make a presentation. These two lessons provide a great long term project for upper level students, while offering an opportunity to use English in a number of "authentic" settings. As the nation awaits the decision of the Massachusetts Supreme Court on the right of same-sex couples to civil marriage, educators are the presented with an opportunity to teach students about one of the most significant civil and human rights issues of our time. Marriage is a critical issue because it touches all at once on questions of love and sex, religion and politics, access to legal and economic benefits, and the role of government in our personal lives. Along with parents and care takers, schools must take a leading role in providing accurate information about same-sex relationships and creating safe spaces in which students can make sense of the various points of view they hear from family, peers, community leaders, and mass media. Toward this end, At Issue: Marriage, Exploring the Debate Over Marriage Rights for Same-Sex Couples offers educators six lesson plans for high school aged students that challenges them to explore the range of complex issues reflected in the marriage debate.

The program’s generic format is designed for teachers to borrow, amend, edit, and enlarge, as they deem necessary, for their classrooms. With adaptations and modifications the activities are appropriate for use in Middle School 7th and 8th grade Social Studies and American History courses and for High School Civics and United States History at all levels. Teachers utilizing the program or designing additional materials should address the Connecticut Framework K-12 Curricular Goals and Standards for Social Studies and the curriculum standards below, taken from the National Council for the Social Studies ten themes. Individual activities should also reflect Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences approach to the development of materials and Benjamin Blooms’ Taxonomy of higher level thinking skills. While viewing a CT-N videotaped Legislative session students, in a group setting, will determine how both Democrats and Republicans conceptualize the key points of a bill. The activity is intended to help students understand and evaluate the key points of a piece of legislation and then produce a persuasive product designed to gather support for their argument.
    How To Watch Your Legislators

While viewing a CT-N videotaped Legislative session of a proposed legislative bill, students will identify key arguments between Democrats and Republicans and then as a class reach a consensus (majority rules) position on whether the bill should pass.

    The European Union 1 - Lesson Plan: 4 x 1 hour lessons
A series of 'off the shelf' lesson plans and resources for use in the classroom. These lessons deal with the European Union and are relevant to the following specifications:
    • AQA: Module 4 Edexcel: Unit 4, Unit 6 OCR: Unit 2883, 5.3.4 and 2888, 5.8.2
    Aim:
The purpose of the lessons is to encourage students to carry out research into some key aspects of the EU and to separate out fact from opinion, reinforcing the idea of positive and normative issues in economics. The lessons are based around the development of a debate on whether the UK should continue with its membership of the EU. The format follows that of a debate and it is suggested that the 'audience' referred to is drawn from the remainder of the institution - other economics/business groups, younger students as part of their citizenship courses in other institutions or in the school/college, the rest of the 'sixth form' in a general studies session or similar. The process of developing an argument in this way places a responsibility on students to build their understanding and ability to generate a coherent and supported argument - especially if they have to present their case to an 'audience' as suggested.
