SIUC debate team earns national recognition
By K.C. Jaehnig (Editors: Note local names, addresses at story end) CARBONDALE, Ill. "We're 37th! We're 37th!" It's not the sort of chant you usually hear at intense competitions for national ranking, but this is Southern Illinois University Carbondale's freshman debate team. They do things differently here. "Debate isn't sports, though we like to talk about the competitive edge and wins and losses," said Charles "Chuck" L. Walts, a speech communication doctoral student from Abilene, Texas , now in his second year as debate coach. "But fundamentally, it's about critical thinking, about discussing issues that don't get talked about in common conversation but are important to the survival of the world. Debate unlocks skills and potential you didn't know you had. Debate takes ordinary, insecure college freshmen and turns them into extremely competent, successful people who go on to do wonderful things." Actually, SIUC's freshman team, composed of Des Moines, Iowa

"A person's a person, no matter how small." -Dr. Seuss Statement of Purpose:
McNeese Students for Life is a pro-life student organization at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, that is devoted to upholding the value of life through promoting awareness, education, support, and healing.
Starting with the belief that every human life is equally valuable from conception to natural death regardless of age, race, gender, and disability, we wish to challenge the "freedom of choice" that cripples women into thinking they cannot care for their children.
Freedom of choice ignores men and erases their role and responsibility as fathers. We wish to challenge the "freedom of choice" that condemns the innocent and helpless to death, especially those most innocent and helpless, the unborn.
If you are willing to join us in this fight for the dignity of human life, we will accept you with open arms please join us! In January of 2002, on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, McNeese Students for Life put up 4000 crosses in the main quadrangle in memory of the 4000 babies aborted each day in the United States. Urban Debate Leagues (UDLs) organize interscholastic debate as an academic competition, and promote debate as a component of the regular classroom curriculum, so that urban youth who have for so long been denied the powerful academic benefits of debate can be offered this valuable learning tool. UDLs thus aim to eliminate a particular form of educational and social inequality. UDLs have a positive academic impact on the entire urban public school systems that they are in.
