IDEA WEEKLY
Issue 20
May 17 - 24, 2004
Welcome to the twentieth issue of the IDEA Weekly Newsletter! Many of our members seem to be busy with the end of the school year plans, because this week's newsletter does not feature many entries with news from you, but we have some very important announcements regarding the upcoming Summer Forum in Estonia. On top of my usual request for reports about events in your countries, I would like to ask for specific contributions from debaters. So teachers, please encourage your debaters to send short or long articles on their experience with debate (sharing some frustration with the different types of propositions, tough debates, easy debates, first or last debates - anything they might find memorable or important). E-mail all your contributions to me at pilora@kaunas.omnitel.net.

International Debate Strategies for Success Strategies for Success
A Focus on Collaboration From its inception, International Debate has sought international partnerships which encourage an intersectoral approach to issues of health equity and social cohesion. Through International Debate, consolidated collaboration agreements have been established between WHO country offices and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Office for Projects Services (UNOPS), United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). These partnerships have increased UN engagement in, and resources available for, governmental reform priorities.
International Debate is active in Albania, Italy, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Serbia and Montenegro, with further expansion scheduled for 2005. In Albania, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) / UNOPS / Programme of Assistance to Support Albanian Regions and Prefectures (PASARP) was a central implementation partner. Activities in Honduras were conducted in collaboration with UN agencies and the Anti-Poverty Partnership Initiative / Territorial, Integrated and Participatory Programme (APPI/TIPP). In Serbia and Montenegro, the City-to-City programme, an initiative of UNDP-UNOPS, is an important partner.

25. Introduction
The Japan Debate Association (JDA) was inaugurated in March 1986 with the aim ofpromoting debate activities and developing debate skills in Japan.
http://www.kt.rim.or.jp/~jda/intro-e.htm
What is JDA
  • T he Japan Debate Association (JDA) was inaugurated in March 1986 with the aim of promoting debate activities and developing debate skills in Japan.
  • Debate is a competitive form of communication conducted according to specific rules, where two teamsthe "Affirmative" and the "Negative"oppose each other on an issue. The Affirmative team stands in favor of the proposition, called a "resolution", and the negative team takes a stand against it, in one of several ways. Each side presents its own case based on research and analysis of the resolution, and advocates this stand throughout the debate by responding to and refuting their opponents' arguments.
  • The primary purpose of debate is to persuade a third party, that is, the debate judge and/or the audience. Debate is a very effective tool for making decisions in the various situations we face daily in society. It is, therefore, used in education and training programs to develop essential abilities, such as researching and analyzing specific issues, thinking critically and logically, conducting reasoned discourse, and making clear and logical verbal presentations of theresults of these processes.
  • As Japan works to maintain and increase its role in the international arena, it is called upon to make choices which reflect its own priorities as a nation, and to advocate the validity of these choices in ways clearly understood by its counterparts. Within the Japanese society, too, it will become more and more necessary to identify unequivocally where disagreements lie, and to work out solutions which take a number of different opinions and standpoints respectfully into account.

Debates are an effective way to inform and involve voters in the political process. The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) compiled the following guidelines for sponsoring debates of any kind, including those in political races, issue forums, and student debates. This guide was prepared to answer the questions most commonly asked by the educational, civic and media organizations that host debates. It will introduce you to the steps necessary to organize such an event and serve as a checklist for planning. Remember there's no single right way to proceed; this guide will simply outline some options. For more information on debates, contact the CPD at (202) 872-1020. Checklist This guide uses the following checklist to help you prepare for your debate. Each item is addressed in detail farther down the page and can be jumped to by clicking on the topic. How much will a debate cost? The answer depends on the size of the production, promotion, security, rental of a debate hall, and dozens of other things. Think ahead about the budget and how to finance the event. You may wish to identify sponsors who can help underwrite the costs and acknowledge their assistance in printed materials and on your website.

New York City Urban Debate League: Investigating Youth's Experiences in a "Democracy in Action" Afterschool Program
    < BACK TO PROJECTS

    Principal Investigator: Georgia Hall, Ph.D.
The researchers propose to investigate the approach and activities of the New York City Urban Debate League (NYCUDL) and discuss how youth, through participation in these leagues, develop democracy skills and experiences that can effect personal change. Urban debate leagues organize interscholastic debate as an academic competition and promote debate as a valuable learning tool. This research study will: (1) describe the components of the debate program; (2) profile the youth and adult participants; (3) provide an analysis of the “debate” approach and activities as an example of "democracy in action"; (4) present an exploration of the experiences of and impacts on participating youth; and (5) investigate the infrastructure that supports the delivery of urban debate activities.
There is a good amount of literature describing the elements of debate and how skills developed in debate may transfer to other endeavors create a stronger foundation for academic achievement, etc. The purpose of this proposed study is to look deeper into how the youth actually experience the democratic ideals and skills that form the foundation of a debate program, and in what ways those experiences influence the youth's understanding of, participation in, and consideration of democracy.

History Competitive Opportunities History Forensics has been a part of the LSU campus for over fifty years. Earliest affiliations were with the National Debate Tournament and Tau Kappa Alpha. When Delta Sigma Rho and Tau Kappa Alpha merged, LSU Speech and Debate were there. Since then, LSU has fielded teams and participants to tournaments across the country. LSU debaters earned elimination round berths in tournaments hosted by Southern University, Baylor University, and other prestigious tournaments like the Cross Examination Debate Association National Tournament, and the Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha National Championship Tournament. On April 21, 1999, the LSU Debate Team was renamed the Mixon Lyceum of LSU, in honor of Professor Harold Mixon. Mixon, a member of the LSU Department of Speech Communication Faculty, coached the team for over 18 years. He also taught rhetoric and argumentation to countless LSU students. As a living monument to this living legend, we are proud to extend Mixon’s spirit of enthusiasm for rhetoric in our competitive and intramural endeavors. [Return to Top] Competitive Opportunities Policy Debate It's a two person team debate, in which you and a partner support the affirmative or negative position of a resolution against a team from another university. These competitions take place at tournaments which occur approximately every two weeks during the school year. At each tournament you have the opportunity to compete in six or eight rounds, on both the affirmative and the negative side of the resolution.

    36. Apricot: Why Debate?
Chris Jeub, president of Training Minds Ministry, writes “Students who participatein the speech and debate activities are top notch students. Why?
    http://www.apricotpie.com/abby/WhyDebate.html
a gathering of homeschooling students and homeschool graduates home essays poems fiction ... make a comment Why Debate? posted by Abby on 2/11/2003 The little, brightly painted room was as silent as a graveyard. My eyes, wide with fear, slowly scanned the patiently waiting faces of the audience. Suddenly, a voice hissed in my ear,
“Go! it’s your turn to speak.”
My turn? To speak? To get up there, behind that podium, and actually SAY something? You’ve got to be joking! Whimpering softly, I turned to my partner, desperate. “What do I say?”
“Anything, just go.” Nodding, and trying to swallow my horror, I stood up, shuffling my papers anxiously. Almost choking on my tongue I began. “Uh, um, hi. I... don’t really know what I’m doing, so, I think, uh, that subsidies are uh, good, and we should have them. Yeah.”
So went my first round in my first debate tournament. It was terrifying, stressful and frightening experience, yet it is one experience that I am so thankful I went through. Debate has been one of the best decisions I have made in my young life, and I strongly believe that it something that all homeschoolers should experience. Debate strengthens academic areas, is valuable to one’s future career, and is especially important for Christians, as we are called to share the Gospel.
Whether you want to be a lawyer, a doctor, or a used car salesman, debate will help you in any area of your life. Benjamin Schubert, nationally ranked debater and speaker wrote: “The skills I develop from debate will serve me during a job interview, in public and church meetings, in other classrooms, and when I witness to unbelievers about the Truth that I have within me.” Training for debate is also life training. Think about the different scenarios that debate could assist you in your years to come:

Kim Wolf, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine
The following print interview appeared in the Winter issue of The Old Schoolhouse magazine. The interview reflects the heart of speech and debate that Training Minds wishes to support. One way to get our teenagers to learn more about a subject is to assign them the task of writing a report. Depending on the subject, that route will only take them “so far.” Want to turn them on to a way that will truly spark their interest? Help them have a deeper understanding of controversial issues? Get their friends involved so that they might spur each other on to better things? Squelch those socialization nay-sayers? Students learn communication skills unlike any other extracurricular activity Have you ever considered debate? I know, you feel like you get enough of debate from your teens already! But this is something different and constructive. Chris Jeub, of Training Minds Ministry, has taken his love for speech and debate and has created a ministry for homeschoolers that not only stretches their knowledge and intellectual creative juices, but also draws them closer to their Savior. TOS: Chris, thanks so much for joining us at TOS. You have certainly filled a great need in the homeschool community. What did you see in homeschoolers that caused you to begin the Training Minds Ministry?
