Truly respecting death and its inevitability brings, paradoxically, a relaxing of the fear of death, along with a heightened sense of the importance of life and of what we choose to do with the time we have. The fact that any particular person is going to die or has already died is no ones fault it is a necessary part of being alive. Excessive fear of death distorts lives, and seems to be responsible for many of the more bizarre and inhumane excesses of our American medical system. In our search for sustainable, effective, respectful health care practices, ideas that could contribute to a sane and compassionate integrated health care system, we've found nothing as simple, basic, workable and cost effective as coming to terms with death and the process of dying something we can do as individuals, as families, as communities and as a culture. The issues we need to face to prepare for our own death, or that of someone we love, are mostly the same, whatever we believe about what, if anything, will follow this life. Whether you believe you will live again in another body, with another personality and history and so on, or that your life will continue in one or another of the heavens or hells described by various religions, or that when you die, that's it whatever you believe about what happens next death itself is relatively simple.

The person must be diagnosed as terminally ill by a licensed physician or the person must have a condition that is incurable and associated with severe, unrelenting psychological agony or physical suffering even if not imminently terminal, for example, chronic, progressive multiple sclerosis.

Be Not Afraid
When God's angel broke the good news of the Savior's birth to the cowering shepherds of Bethlehem, "Fear not!" was more than an instruction for them to get up off the ground and stop shielding their frightened faces. It was a declaration of war on fear.
The Last Hour

Dying almost always involves a hard struggle. Part of it is fear, which is often rooted in uncertainty of the unknown and unknowable future. Part of it may be the urge to fulfill unmet obligations or to be relieved of past regrets or guilt. But part of it is also our natural resistance to the thought that everything we know is coming to an end.
Impending Resurrection

Are caterpillars told of their impending resurrection? How in dying they will be transformed from poor earth-crawlers into creatures of the air, with exquisitely painted wings? If told, do they believe?
Illness and Death

The fight of any individual against sickness or death shows us the struggle in which we all are placed - the struggle against darkness. When an attack of darkness comes upon us, we must put ourselves completely on the side of the light of Jesus.
The Feast of Freedom

Easter is at one and the same time God's protest against death, and the feast of freedom from death. Anyone who fails to hold these two things together has failed to understand the resurrection of the Christ who was crucified.

Proposed Legislation Get Involved News Articles ... About DWD-Vermont
Overview
Death With Dignity Vermont is a not-for-profit, independent political action organization based in Vermont. It works as a team with End-of-Life Choices Vermont, a grassroots organization, to realize their goal of effecting legislation in Vermont similar to the Oregon Death with Dignity Act.
Vermont Death with Dignity legislation will:
  • Guarantee that all adult Vermonters have legal end-of-life choices Assure that mentally-competent persons who are terminally ill have the right to choose the manner and timing of death Avoid the pain of unwanted tubes and machines that merely prolong the dying process

How will the Death with Dignity Act work?
We propose that Vermont's Death with Dignity Act allow a terminally ill, mentally competent person, with a life expectancy of less than six months, to request and receive a prescription from his/her physician to hasten his/her death in a humane and dignified manner. Self-administration of such prescription may be in private or in the presence of family members, friend and/or a doctor.

Coping with Death and Dying College students all fear death and they all believe that they will live forever. But death will enter our lives. Students therefore need to learn how to live with death, dying and grief. Why the Fear of Death?
There are several reasons why college students may be afraid of dying:
    • The premature interruption of life activities.
    • Effects of death upon family members, classmates and friends.
    • The fear of death without dignity, for example, being kept alive by machine.
    • The fear of nothingness after death.
Impact of Loss: The Grieving Process
When a loved one/classmate is dying or dies, there is a grieving process. Recovery is a slow and emotionally painful one. The grieving process can be less painful if you try to understand that loss and grief is a natural part of life. Learn to accept your loss and believe in yourself. Believe that you can cope with tragic happenings. Let your experience be a psychological growth process that will help you to deal with future stressful events. The grieving process usually consists of the following stages. Note that not everyone goes through all these stages.

State lawmakers vow to fight for 'death with dignity' bill
Risser, Boyle say they will continue their 10-year effort
    By STEVEN WALTERS
    swalters@journalsentinel.com
Last Updated: April 27, 2003 Madison - Two Democratic lawmakers who have spent 10 years pushing a bill that would give the terminally ill a process to ask their doctor for life-ending drugs have vowed to try, try again. "This is death with dignity, it's not suicide," said Sen. Fred Risser (D-Madison). "It applies only to terminally ill people, who cannot have an alternative to death." Rep. Frank Boyle (D-Superior) vowed to continue the "struggle" of the last decade, saying the change he and Risser want to make would add compassion to the dying who are already struggling through pain, grief and uncertainty. Medical specialists are making decisions that should be made by the dying, he added. Although the bill has never received a vote in either the full Assembly or Senate, and often hasn't even been given a public hearing in past legislative sessions, both legislators said public opinion supports them.
