A collection of short stories about people and death and dying.
Preface
M y mother died of cancer. She had been told of the cancer about 7 months before her death. During that time we called in hospice and I read every book or pamphlet that I was given to prepare myself for what lay ahead. I believed if one tried hard enough any death could be peaceful. Hospice could control pain and our job as a family was to meet her needs. But I wasn't prepared. There was so much that no one ever told me. And because there were components of her death that were not peaceful I was left feeling as if I could have done better.
When my mother's death was at hand, things happened not described in any of the materials I had been given to read. The experience was not peaceful. She didn't see people who had already died or talk of feeling ready. We did not have that one last wonderful talk. Instead she was agitated, restless, anxious, and spoke of nightmares.
One evening I located a support group on the internet for people who were going to lose or had lost a loved one. Groping to make sense of my mother's suffering I told the group of my mother's death. They shared their experiences with me. I can't tell you why or when my healing began but only that hearing others' stories did this for me.

S OCIOLOGY OF D EATH AND D YING
It has been claimed that one can never look directly at the sun nor at one's own death. And yet, throughout the history of mankind, both have been the enduring themes of myth and religion, science and magic, curiosity and fear. From our late twentieth century vantage point we find that as the sun is understood as being the source of life in the natural order, so death is becoming recognized as the central dynamism underlying the life, vitality, and structure of the social order. Death is the muse of our religions, philosophies, political ideologies, arts and medical technologies. It sells newspapers and insurance policies, invigorates the plots of our television programs, andjudging from our dependency on fossil fuels (84.5% of all U.S. energy consumption in 1995)even powers our industries. It is the barometer by which we measure the adequacy of social life, such as when we compare cross-cultural death and life expectancy rates to gauge social progress, compare national homicide rates to infer the stability of social structures, or compare death rates of different social groups to ascertain social inequalities . In fact, perhaps the very first evidence of

LINKS and THOUGHTS about Loss, Grief, and Bereavement
My plan is to insert links to various sites of interest relating to bereavement issues from deaths and other losses. I want to make this a comprehensive list of as many of the informational resources available as I can locate. This page is dedicated to all the people searching for help and supportive informationpeople who do not know where to turn or look. Even people just wanting to learn more. From time to time, I will also print out an interesting article or words from people willing to share their feelings.
letter from a grieving mother

Valentine poem

Rainbow Bridge

Bereavement is the state of loss, grief is the emotion felt about the loss, and mourning is how one expresses this feeling about the loss, but whatever term a person wishes to use, it is still a process. One does not "get over it," or "completely heal," or find "closure." The effects of death change all survivors foreverthey adapt if they have lots of help, endless hope, and valid information, but they NEVER forget! The pain is something one may want to send to oblivion not the person cared about

Bereavement Support
This website is created by bereaved parents for bereaved parents. The death of a child, of whatever age, is the most tragic event any parent can expect to deal with. The aim of this website is primarily to express an empathy with other bereaved parents through sharing our thoughts and experiences. Throughout our son's illness, which appeared after his second birthday, we have had the great fortune to become friends with many parents who have gone through similar tragedies in life, and we gain comfort and support from their continued friendship.
I hope to develop this site in celebration of the life of our Son, Gareth and to his two sisters who miss him dearly. I also aim to provide useful links to other official websites in order for parents, families and friends to discover more about their childs illness. Information is needed in order for us to make informed decisions on treatment and support. I desperately needed information when my son's illness was first diagnosed but it wasn't until the last few months of his life I discovered answers to many of my questions.
I take this opportunity to sincerely thank all medical staff "out there" for their truly dedicated work in trying to relieve the suffering of our children.

97. Dead & Buried : Death Euphemisms
75 euphemisms for death and dying. I compiled this list of euphemisms as part of a course on the sociology of dying and death.
http://phrontistery.50megs.com/longpig/dead.html
213 Euphemisms for Death and Dying Why would somebody do this? Why would I do this? Some people say that I have a morbid fascination with death, or that I am a sick person. They are probably right. Whenever I see a photo of a corpse (I love forensics) I always want to know how the person died, what happened to them... How does someone go from being a beautiful living creature to a twisted hunk of cold meat? A certain compassion is stirred within me... I compiled this list of euphemisms as part of a course on the sociology of dying and death. I know there are tons more out there... If you have one that you think is interesting, please send it to me, and I'll add it to the list and give credit where credit is due. a b c d ... p /q/ r s t u ... w /x/y/z a-b
