The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), formerly the Education of the Handicapped Act (P.L. 94-142), includes "hearing impairment" and "deafness" as two of the categories under which children with disabilities may be eligible for special education and related services programming. While the term "hearing impairment" is often used generically to describe a wide range of hearing losses, including deafness, the regulations for IDEA define hearing loss and deafness separately. Hearing impairment is defined by IDEA as "an impairment in hearing, whether permanent or fluctuating, that adversely affects a child's educational performance." Deafness is defined as "a hearing impairment that is so severe that the child is impaired in processing linguistic information through hearing, with or without amplification."

In developed countries deafness has an important genetic origin and at least 60% of the cases are inherited. The pattern of inheritance can be dominant, recessive, X-linked and mitochondrial. Many genes are involved in the different types of deafness (syndromic and non-syndromic). Non-syndromic hereditary deafness is mainly (80%) due to recessive genes (or mutations). It is believed that more than one hundred genes could be involved in hearing impairment. Several of these genes have been identified recently by positional cloning or positional candidate gene approaches. Despite the fact that more than 20 loci have been described for non-syndromic autosomal recessive deafness (DFNB), a single locus, DFNB1, accounts for a high proportion of the cases, with variability depending on the population. The gene involved in this type of deafness is GJB2, which encodes the gap junction protein connexin 26(Cx26). NEW Recent data indicates that DFNB1 can also be due to a deletion of 342Kb involving GJB6, a gene that is very close to GJB2. This deletion has been reported to cause deafness both in the homozygous status and in heterozygosity with a GJB2 point mutation in trans (see big deletions affecting connexin genes...).

On this page:
What is Pendred syndrome?
Pendred syndrome is a genetic condition typically associated with hearing loss and goiter, which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland (a butterfly-shaped organ at the base of the neck that produces hormones). Hearing loss is often evident at birth, but in some cases it does not develop until later in infancy or early childhood. Abnormalities of bones in the inner ear are also common in Pendred syndrome. If a goiter develops, it usually forms sometime after the onset of hearing loss, during late childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.
How common is Pendred syndrome?

Beethoven's story is one of personal triumph over tragedy
and supreme musical achievement. A complex and brilliant man,
no composer before or since has exerted greater influence.
This site is devoted to the life and works of Ludwig van Beethoven, who in my opinion was the greatest composer to ever live. This site contains pictures relating to Beethoven, audio/MIDI files of Beethoven works, and general info about Beethoven. You can return to this page any time you wish by simply clicking on the Beethoven graphic on the top of each page. Most of the material in this site is from other sources, that is I do not have copy right permission over the material. For this reason I have included a Sources Page documenting the various sources of this site's material. I hope that you enjoy your visit through Beethoven's mind.

Full size image available below Deafness Genes Hearing is one of the basic elements of human communication, yet millions of Americans are hearing impaired. Currently only a few strategies for overcoming the deficiency exist. For example, some people with a moderate case can overcome the impairment with hearing aids, which amplify sounds. Others bypass the communication setback with sign language. Researchers now hope that new findings on the genetic component of deafness will help expand treatment options. Painstaking analysis has led to the recent discovery of a large number of mutated genes that are involved in causing deafness in humans. An understanding of how these genes operate is helping researchers devise biological strategies to protect or restore human hearing. Nag. Nag. Nag. You shut the door to block out the rantings from the other room. Ahhh. Peace.
But what if the silence was endless? Many individuals spend life unable to detect nagging yells as well as romantic whispers, telephone chit chat and radio tunes because their hearing system is damaged. In fact, about 30 million Americans have moderate to severe hearing impairments.
Sometimes the impairment is triggered by an outside source. Toxic drugs, infections or booming noises louder than 90 decibels like a jet engine roar can injure a hearing system.
