Danish (dansk)
Danish is a North Germanic language with around 5.5 million speakers mainly in Denmark, but also in Greenland, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Canada, the UAE and the USA. Danish was the official language of Norway until about 1830 and of Iceland until 1944. Danish is now the first foreign language learnt in Iceland. During the Middle Ages, Danish was heavily influenced by Low German dialects, while during the 17th century Danish absorbed many French loanwords and from the 19th century onwards, many English words have been taken into Danish. The first written work of Danish literature was Gesta Danorum (History of the Danes) written in Latin in about 1200 by Saxo Grammaticus. This recounts the history of Denmark up to 1186 and includes Danish versions (in a somewhat Christianized form) of Scandinavian myths and sagas, including the earliest version of the Hamlet story. You can see an online version of Gesta Danorum in the original Latin at: http://www.kb.dk/elib/lit/dan/saxo/lat/or.dsr/

Links to other Dercum sites A chronic, almost unknown disease, described for the first time by the American neurologist Francis X. Dercum in 1888. Neither the cause of the disease, nor which sort, is yet known. Most common symptoms:
Pain, definite or indefinite swellings or lipomas, weight gain of maybe 50%, fatigue, difficulty in walking. The disease occurs mainly among women and increases with age. In spite of the fact that the disease has been known and described for more than 100 years very little research is going on - a fact that must relate to the disease being so rare. The WHO system of diagnoses ICD-10 places it under the number E 88-2.
Please notice that this is a private homepage based only on my personal knowledge and cannot replace any contact with your physician.
Originally the primary goal of making this site was to spread information about this disease in Danish as almost nothing is available in Danish regarding this subject. But realizing that also foreigners visit the homepage an English translation has now been added. Introduction Danish is spoken by the 5 million inhabitants of Denmark, and is also the official language of Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which are considered part of Denmark. It is one of the Scandinavian languages, which constitute a branch of the Germanic languages, in turn a part of the Indo-European family. Danish is most closely related to Norwegian and Swedish. During the centuries that Denmark and Norway were one country, a dialect closer to Danish than Norwegian was spoken in the Norwegian cities. This is still in use today and is sometimes referred to as "Dano-Norwegian." The Danish alphabet is the same as the Norwegian, consisting of the twenty-six letters of the English alphabet plus

Introduction to the Danish language
Introduktion til det danske sprog Danish, the official language of Denmark, is spoken by over 5 million people. It is a germanic tongue, which means it is closely related to English and German. It becomes obvious when one gets to know some Danish vocabulary, eg. come (Eng.) = komme (Dan.) = kommen (Ger.), bring (Eng.) = bringe (Dan.) = bringen (Ger.). As a nordic language, it is very similar to Swedish and Norwegian. The knowledge of any of the above mentioned languages is a big help in learning Danish, and in the case of the two latter mutual understanding without prior learning is often possible.
The Danish alphabet differs slightly from the Latin one. There are three additional letters (found at the end of alphabet remember about it browsing a dictionary or a phone directory!) They are
  • as in "forældre" (parents) a ligature of "a" and "e".
Indicates a monophtong (a single vowel). as in "rød" (red) a "crossed o".

The official language of Denmark, it is spoken by over 5 million people, most of whom live in Denmark; however, there are some Danish speakers in Greenland, the Faeroe Islands, Iceland, and the United States. Like the other Scandinavian languages, Danish is derived from Old Norse, and by the first half of the 12th cent. it could be distinguished from the parent tongue (see Germanic languages Norse ). Between 1100 and 1800 a number of phonological changes took place in Danish, and the grammar became increasingly simple. The spelling and pronunciation of the language began to be standardized c.1700, and a modern standard Danish can be said to have existed since about 1800, although there are still a number of dialects. Danish grammar is comparatively simple. The noun is inflected only to show the possessive and plural forms and has but two genders, neuter and nonneuter (or common). The meaning of nouns that are otherwise the same can depend on gender. For example, when used in the nonneuter ¸re means “coin,” whereas used in the neuter
