Camp Dance Troupe Welcome to Utamaduni, Denmark. Friendship and cultural exchange with Tanzania, Africa. The name "Utamaduni", a swahili word meaning "culture", was adopted by the dance troupe after a Danish cultural exchange with the Sukuma tribe in Tanzania in 1977. The exchange project in which the Danes also performed their traditional dance, was called "Daraja la Utamaduni" / "The cultural bridge". From that embryonic beginning of cultural exchange, rich and fertile images of African culture were absorbed by the "Danes" - all thanks to the Sukuma people. Since then Utamaduni has woven a tapestry of dance, drum, and song rhythms into a bond of friendship with local farmers and handicraft artists, and has inspired more than 25 Danish dance troupes that meet weekly for dance and workshops. We started teaching classes (waltz, originally) because we perceived a need for more challenging classes in our favorite dances that most of what we saw available. Many of our dancer friends had taken the available classes in waltz, foxtrot, etc. and were eager for more, but there were no social dance classes for non-beginners available in these dances. A number of our fellow dancers asked for an intermediate-level class, and thus we began. For dancers with limited experience, the best bet would be our intermediate turning waltz class that begins in September, but it is not a class for beginning dancers. We recommend that beginning dancers go to other local teachers that specialize in teaching beginners and just-past-beginners; come back to us once you've learned what they have to offer! Our Links page lists a number of local groups and teachers that specialize in teaching beginning dancers; if you go to dance events, you'll find flyers for other teachers. Dance and choreography Career Overview For years and years, dancers have used their bodies to express ideas, stories, and rhythm. Many different kind of dance allow them to move freely and express themselves, such as classical ballet, modern dance, and dance styles specific to cultures. Several dancers merge performance work with instructing or choreography. Dancers perform in musical productions, opera, musical theater, television, movies, music videos, commercials and other various settings where sinning and acting may also to required. They may present styles which include: folk, ethnic, tap, jazz and other well-known dance styles. A few artists perform by themselves; however, most dancers perform as part of a group. Several dancers pair up with choreographers, who put together brand new dances and create new versions of existing dances. Choreographers train performers at rehearsals to accomplish the preferred effect because very few routines are actually documented.
