Dance The Dance department is designed to give each student a chance to explore the world of dance regardless of her previous level of training. Beginning and intermediate ballet and modern dance are offered as well as a performing class, "Panache". In each dance class correct alignment of the body, flexibility, and musicality are stressed. Each student is encouraged to improve to her own level of technical ability.
Students with a strong desire to perform can audition for the "Panache". Choreography of many different dance forms is taught in this class and students are encouraged to create, perform, and teach their own choreography. The pieces learned in "Panache" are performed for the students, faculty, and the Chatham community in an annual production.
Dance teacher, Ann Pflugshaupt holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mary Washington College and a Master of Science degree with a concentration in Dance from James Madison University. She has been the dance teacher at Chatham Hall since 1998. Ann has also been on the faculty of the Danville Academy of Dance Inc. (formerly known as the Martha Fowlkes Academy of Dance) for twenty-one years. She became co-owner and co-director of The Danville Academy of Dance in 2001. Ann has previously taught ballet at the Grove Park Magnet School for the Arts in Danville.
Ann has also taught at Averett College, James Madison University, and for the Fair Summer Workshop held at Washington and Lee University. She has studied with the Houston Ballet, the Eglevsky Ballet, the Briansky Ballet, and the Virginia School of the Arts. During her career she has choreographed many musicals. Her favorites have been West Side Story, Godspell, Mame, Little Abner, and Anything Goes.

American Style Ballroom Dancing In Trinidad
A Meeting of Hearts and Minds through Dance By Dolly Reynolds Tavasieff Traditionally, American Style ballroom dancingthat smooth, romantic, earthy, creative style of dancing embraced by both Fred Astaire and the Mambo Kingshas been confined to the United States. Professional ballroom dancers from Maine to California have raised the standards of American Style dancing to unprecedented levels. But for the rest of the world, professional ballroom dancing has a European face: it is the formal, rigid elegance of the International Style. But now, on a beautiful island 7 miles off the coast of Venezuela, the small Caribbean nation of Trinidad has its own corps of professionally certified American Style ballroom dancers. This is the extraordinary result of the collaboration of Diane Jarmolow of the Ballroom Dance Teachers College in Oakland, California, and Eugene and Jessica Joseph of the Trinidad Dance Theater in San Fernando, Trinidad. This was much more than just a series of professional certification workshops. Diane’s experience in Trinidad was a true cultural exchange, a meeting of hearts and minds through dance.

Don Giovanni
Don Giovanni is the second of the three masterpieces which were the collaboration of composer Wolfgang Mozart with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte. The legend of the fascinating figure of the womaniser and blasphemer Don Juan is at least 600 years old, and was first dramatised in Spain in 1630. Mozart/da Ponte's opera version is a blend of comedy and the tragically serious, creating fast-moving and dramatic musical action. Its violence, tenderness, and the consistently expressive music woven around the escapades of Don Juan/Giovanni have continued to entrance audiences for more than 200 years, and are as potent as ever in the 21st century.
