Welcome to THE GILDAD SERPANT
Yasmela tell us about the Mendocino Middle Eastern Music and Dance Camp for THE GILDAD SERPANT A review-style article from JAFEEDA MAGAZINE I was only able to attend two of Elena Lentini's classes. Elena is from New York as well, and was a principal dancer in the Ibrahim Farrah Near East Dance Group. One day I was in class she was explaining how to take on the characteristics of other creatures to enhance your dance. Our focus was on snakes that hour. Elena deftly demonstrated many moves and had us follow her while we tried them on for fit. I got so much out of just watching her and hearing her explanations. She has a unique style and way of getting ideas across that resonated with me. I like the snake techniques she shared and some of them have already cropped up in performance and practice for me while dancing since! Knowing you may like to hear more about this Camp than my experience of it, I asked a few folks at random during the week for their personal impressions. "For years I've been attending other camps on both coasts. Years! I thought they were 'it' for me. This is my first year here, and already I see I have been wasting my time. I've learned more useful things here in the first three days of this Camp than in all my years at the others. This is where I want to be. Wow. At least I'm here now. Too bad it took me so long to figure it out!"~ anonymous musician from MD.

Teach in wife's presence, dance teacher told
The Calcutta high court has asked a dance teacher to teach his students in the presence of his wife after she cried foul over his alleged relations with his students. The complainant Sneha had alleged that in the name of training, her husband used to hobnob with girl students at the dancing institution located in North Kolkata. Her husband Suraj Dokania had moved an anticipatory bail prayer against the complaint. Admitting Suraj's prayer on Friday, a division bench comprising Justice Amit Talukdar and Justice S P Mitra, in an interim order, asked the petitioner to take his wife Sneha from his in-laws' place to the dance school where she would stay during the lessons. The court, after consulting additional public prosecutor Ashimesh Goswami and Debabrata Roy, Suraj's lawyer, directed that the arrangement would continue for 15 days, during which Suraj would also have to look for an alternative residence where they could stay together. The bench observed that it would consider the anticipatory bail prayer of Suraj after a fortnight during which they would have to follow the orders.

Hummingbirds currently offers classes in dance, yoga and music for children and adults, many of whom are wheelchair bound. Benham hopes to eventually offer 15 classes a day, six days a week in the 10,000 sq. ft. space.
The space was previously a sweatshop and in need of a gut renovation, which has already cost $430,000. Frank Labriola, the designer, expects it will cost between $150,000 and $175,000 to complete the project. The 200-foot long room will eventually be divided into three studios, divided by folding glass doors, said Benham. A glass wall, with a waterfall running down the front of it, will separate the elevator banks from the studio rooms. Another waterfall may eventually separate the office space from the studio. The waterfalls alone will cost $50,000.
The first time I visited the studio, Martin Stanley, the head carpenter, was constructing an open-air boutique. When I returned a few days later, the boutique was finished and Hummingbirds tee shirts hung from the wall. The school will also sell books, water bottles, Hummingbirds date books and yoga mats.
SohoSoleil, a locations company on Grand St. steered by artist Wendy Friedman, recently added Hummingbirds to its list of locations for weddings, photo shoots and film sets.

This prompted me to revisit a paper that I presented along with my colleague M.A. Greenstein, 4 years ago at the Society of Dance History Scholars Conference in Oregon. The following is based on that paper. I submit it to provoke the thought of your readers with the caveat that this is my opinion and mine alone based simply on my observations and experiences. It is not meant to condemn or criticize the practice of this tradition, either in its pure or degenerate form, or the practitioners who believe in it. I hope it will make you both laugh and think.

At the end of the 18th century the Line Dances dominated the ballrooms, but from the year 1800 new dances were introduced: Francaises, big Quadrilles like Lanciers, Eugenie Quadrille and the exciting Country and Line Dances. The Couple Dances, such as Sauteuse, Scottish Waltz, Russian Waltz, Wiener Waltz, Polka; Mazurka and Galop, were just some of the dances that thrilled
youth at that time. At the Summer School we will be dancing, Danish, American, French and German Ballroom dances. In Denmark we have a very special Lanciers tradition. This tradition is still kept alive all over Denmark and even Her Royal Highness the Queen Margrethe enjoys the Lanciers at Court balls.

Visions and Stories
Edited by Selma Landen Odom and Mary Jane Warner Canadians want to hear stories about their country and the personalities who have forged a path to the present day. Now, thanks to Selma Landen Odom and Mary Jane Warner, two of Canada's senior dance historians, there is finally an anthology that spans Canadian dance history from pre-Confederation to the end of the twentieth century. In Canadian Dance: Visions and Stories , Canadians can read about the reconstruction of a lost ballet by Gweneth Lloyd that had been originally staged in Winnipeg in the 1940s. They will discover how experimental dance was introduced to Toronto audiences by two former dancers with the National Ballet of Canada. They will encounter reasons for the long and rocky saga of trying to find a foothold for theatrical dance in Nova Scotia. They also will have access to Françoise Sullivan's essay, "Dance and Hope," one of the first political treatises about dance written in Canada. A compilation of over thirty articles by dance historians, theorists and professional practitioners

A little, but my Swedish is much better! When did you start dancing?
I started when I was 10, and my first dance teacher was Donald Gillam, an Australian Scot who taught both Swedish, and some Scottish, dance in Sweden . It was at this time that I first came into contact with Scottish Music. What's your favourite piece of music?
Too wide to narrow it down! Many of my favourites are from Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton traditional music. There are also lots of West Swedish polskas that I really like. What are your favourite CDs?

My best piece of feedback was from a little girl about nine years old. Our conversation went like this: Girl: “What were the white things?”
Me: “Feathers.”
Girl: “How did you get them to turn into blood?”
Me: “Did you see blood?”
Girl: “Yep.”
Me: “Wow, you really tuned into the imagery then, didn’t you?”

Immeasurable? The Dance in Dance Science conference at LABAN on Saturday was excellent. There was a person there who changed my weary perception about dance and computers. Being an intersubjectivist, I have always been a little bit concerned about the interface between the human being and technology (in the broadest sense). Needless to say, I still have a mobile phone and a website…
Matthew Gough, a PhD student at the School of computing Sciences, University of East Anglia gave a presentation at the conference in which he shared his developments on a computer programme that he is developing that can be used as a choreographic tool. What interested me most about his presentation was when he gave an example of how the programme could be used. Matthew said that you could programme into the computer information about exactly how a hand moves (i.e. how the fingers open and close, spread apart and come together etc.). With this programme you could make any part of the body move like a hand. For example, the programme could show you how the spine would look if it were moving like a hand. This would not just a symbolic representation of how the spine would move if it were a hand – but it actually let you see how a spine could move like a hand. Fascinating.
