Books on Ballroom Dancing
About this list
This list contains books on or about ballroom dancing, including Latin American dacnes, Swing, and the so-called nightclub dances such as the Hustle. This list includes books on dancing that, for the most part, appeared after 1970. While this cutoff date may seem somewhat arbitrary, it means that most of these books are either still in print, or can be found in major libraries. Social dancing changes with time; older books on dancing are of interest mainly to the historian and not to the practitioner of dancing. Moreover, the dancing boom of the 50's and 60's led to the production of a great many forgettable low-budget paperbacks, whose authors were neither competent dancers nor teachers. If you are interested in a comprehensive list of older books, I recommend searching the library of congress catalogues A few older books do appear in this list. They either have exceptional historical value, such as the book written by the Castles and another by Arthur Murray, or are unique in some way and assumed to have some redeeming value. ABOUT TANGO

There's more than one way to dance the tango! Tango developed in the late 1800's among the urban poor of Argentina, moved up the social ladder to the upper classes, jumped to Europe and then went onto the United States. Tango continued to evolve in these different areas (and others) so that many differences now exist between American, International and Argentine-style tangos. Argentine Tango is a creative dance based on freedom of expression, movement, and most importantly connecting with another person. American and International styles are more codified, but as with all partner dances, also require a strong partner connection. People have preferences, but the different tangos are all valid, each with their own strengths. AMERICAN STYLE TANGO You can take American style tango classes at almost any ballroom dance studio. "Miss Stacy! Miss Stacy!" In a tradition that started four years ago with dance professor Julie Brodie, Ellen has been volunteering her time to teach dance at the preschool since her freshman year. Last year, "Miss Stacy" became the only teacher and now runs the entire program herself. She also explained that most of her past jobs (including dance teacher, camp counselor, babysitter, and day care assistant) have involved children. And her list of jobs working with kids won't stop there. Ellen, who has wanted to be a pediatrician since she was 5 years old, was recently accepted into medical school. Sugar With her impending graduation, Ellen is now in the process of choosing a dance teacher for next year. Though she is sad to say goodbye to her students, "Miss Stacy" is excited to finally become "Dr. Stacy." Ellen, a Spanish and biology double major, is a 2001 graduate of Metuchen High School. She is the daughter of Joan and Barry Ellen, Metuchen, N.J.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Girls in traditional costume performing Irish dance in a St. Patrick's Day Parade in Fort Collins, Colorado Irish Step dancing (sometimes referred to as "Irish dance") is a type of recreational and competitive folk dance that has been recently popularized by the world-famous Riverdance and Lord of the Dance . As the name suggests, the dance form has its roots in Ireland . When performed as a solo dance, it is generally characterized by a stiff upper body and the quick and precise movements of the feet. As a dance form, Irish dance has very precise rules about what one may and may not do and when, but within these rules there is almost infinite room for variety and innovation. Thus, Irish Step Dance is a vibrant and constantly evolving art form.

Roots of Irish dance
The dancing tradition probably grew in tandem with Ireland's rich tradition in music . The very first roots were in Pre-Christian Ireland, but Irish dance was also partially influenced by dance forms on the Continent, especially the quadrille dances. Nearly every child in Ireland was taught at least a little dance, and probably some music too. Traveling dancing masters taught all over Ireland. The Catholic Church and the English both frowned on dancing, the former as immoral and the latter as subversive, but the tradition never truly disappeared. In the nineteenth century, the Irish diaspora spread Irish dance all over the world, especially to

Ireland: My Year in Review

Ireland: My Year in Review
by Catherine Sherer, 2003 Fulbrighter to Ireland
I was delighted when I was asked to write an article about my time in Ireland.  I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to have my own one and half year adventure in Ireland, and to have these wonderful experiences that I can now write about.  This article will probably be therapeutic for me.
The impetus of my trip was the fact that I received a Fulbright grant to follow a Master’s programme at the University of Limerick (UL).  And I did just that:  I earned a M.A. in Ethnochoreology (which is, basically, the anthropology of dance), with an emphasis in traditional Irish dance.  In many ways, the programme was a means to an end for me.  Since I already had a M.F.A. in dance, the degree from UL was an additional master’s that I didn’t necessarily need.  What it did, however, was afford me the opportunity to have an extended stay in Ireland, where I could focus extensively on both the performance and historical aspects of Irish dance.  I swore I was going to make the most of my time in Ireland, especially in relation to improving my dancing and knowledge of the dance itself.
