Dance Teacher Training
There are many ways to become a dance teacher. Some people go on to teach after having had a successful career as a performer; while others see teaching dance as their primary vocation and therefore wish to train quite specifically as a teacher from the outset. The information given below is aimed particularly at the latter.
Private Schools
Teachers working in the private sector are usually self-employed, based at leisure centres, or own small local dance schools. Private dance teachers usually hold qualifications from one or more Dance Awarding Bodies. These offer a range of examinations for children and young people as well as teacher training programmes which lead to teaching qualifications. Only teachers registered with the relevant awarding body may enter children and students for examinations.
CDET has approved the registration schemes of four Dance Awarding Bodies. The Council also has seven Corporate Members. Teachers registered with those awarding bodies and corporate members may be listed in CDET's UK Directory of Registered Dance Teachers and UK Database of Dance Teachers online.

Careers General
Many people see dance simply as theatrical performance in ballet, contemporary dance or musical-theatre. While it is true that there are a number performance opportunities for dancers it is also true that there are other career routes which require equal dedication, hard work and perseverance. Many graduates find their first employment in small-scale touring companies either in this country or abroad. A few, particularly in the contemporary dance sector, set up their own performance companies, touring when and where they can. There are also students who, for different reasons, decide not to follow a performance route and below you will find pointers to other dance related careers. All of them require a passion and understanding of dance in its many forms and all of them have an essential contribution to make to the dance world. Professional opportunities continue to grow.
Choreography
Choreography : Choreographers create dances. It is necessary to have a thorough knowledge of different dance techniques and an ability to communicate ideas either in movement and/or words.

Why Get Certified? Enrollment About Diane Jarmolow ... Home In the News BECOME A BALLROOM DANCE TEACHER AND MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE
by Dolly Reynolds Tavasieff For two weeks this November [2001], the Metronome Ballroom in San Francisco will host the first national Professional Ballroom Dance Teachers College. The Teachers College aims to provide aspiring dance teachers from around the country with the essential tools they need for a successful career as a ballroom instructor. "So many people dream of a career in ballroom dancing, but they feel trapped working in jobs they hate," says Diane Jarmolow, director of the Metronome Ballroom in San Francisco. "I want people to know that a wonderful career as a ballroom dance teacher is a possibility. Basically, I want to make their dreams come true." A tall order? Not for Diane, who has run a year-round professional teacher training program for the past fifteen years. She has trained hundreds of professional dance teachers, including U.S. and International champions. "Becoming a ballroom dance instructor is a very viable career option," she says. "The hours are flexible, and the pay can be quite good, especially as the teacher acquires more training. People seem to think to be a professional dance instructor, you need to have started training at age five and have a ballerina¹s body," she continues, "but this is not true‹there is much more to being a good dance teacher than just being an excellent dancer. There are specific skills that all students can acquire with determination and hard work."

Why Get Certified? Enrollment About Diane Jarmolow ... Home Our Services We offer several programs for aspiring and working dance instructors:
  • Year-Round Teacher-Training Program at the Metronome Ballroom in San Francisco, CA Professional Certification Training in San Francisco
Diane can come to your studio to organize an ongoing program to give you and your staff the tools necessary to succeed in becoming certified. She will create a program tailored specifically for your staff and your business needs. Creative Options for Certification Training
If it is difficult for you to travel to San Francisco or Las Vegas to receive certification training, and you would prefer a longer training period rather than a condensed course, then we can create a custom plan for you. Here are just a few possible options:
    • Phone Meetings: Train for certification via weekly phone lessons with Diane. Although we cannot teach you to dance over the phone, the Theoretical Section of the DVIDA exams (worth 40% of your exam score) is comprised of memorization and clear verbal articulation of the technique. Diane will teach you how to study and learn from the DVIDA manuals and corresponding videos. You will periodically record yourself on video tape, and Diane will critique your presentation.
Online Course: Diane will send you weekly questions that will educate your mind to "think like a dance teacher." She will give you feedback on your answers and explain the theory behind each question. The questions will lay the foundational principles that will help your teaching and preparation for certification exams.
