Choreographer Mark Morris to Speak at Yale
New Haven, Conn. One of the world's most celebrated and provocative contemporary choreographers, Mark Morris, will deliver a lecture at Yale on Monday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. Hailed as the "enfant terrible" of dance, Morris formed his own company in 1980 at the age of 24 and is famous for the wide breadth and originality of his choreographic vision. He has created more than 100 works for the Mark Morris Dance Group , which has performed across the nation and in Europe. From 1988 to 1991, Morris was the director of dance for the national opera house in Brussels, and his troupe became the national dance company of Belgium. During that tenure, Morris created three full-length dances: "The Hard Nut" (a spoof of the perennial Christmas favorite "The Nutcracker"), L'Allegro, il Penserose ed il Moderatoro" and "Dido and Aeneas." In 1990, he founded the White Oak Dance Project with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Morris has created works for many of the major ballet companies in the United States and Europe American Ballet Theater , the San Francisco Ballet , the Boston Ballet and Paris Opera Ballet among them and his work has entered the standard repertory of such renowned companies as the Geneva Ballet, the New Zealand Ballet and the

Introduction
Rag Morris has acquired its own inimitable style over the last twenty years - energetic, colourful, comic, a bit "off-the-wall", certainly never boring and very rarely normal. We wear brilliantly coloured rag shirts and bells. Our repertoire comes from the dances of the Cotswold Hills and the wild Welsh Borders, and we dance with sticks, hankies, bare hands and plastic chickens, to the accompaniment of melodeons, accordions, whistles, drums and strohviols. We like to travel (all offers of somewhere to sleep and free travel gratefully accepted!). In Summer 1994 we went to the Rudolstadt Festival, back (again) to Leipzig, Germany, and on to Prague in the Czech Republic. In 1997 and 2000, we went to Belgium and visited

The Morris Dancing Discussion List (MDDL) is an unmoderated listserv-based discussion group devoted to discussions, debates, and rants on all things Morris, including: Cotswold, Border, Garland, Northwest, etc.; Sword Dancing, both Long Sword and Short Sword (Rapper); Mumming, Mumming plays and other ritual drama; Molly Dancing, Abbots Bromley, Plough Dancing; winter festivals such as Wassailing, Caroling and Twelfth Night; May Day celebrations, including May Poles and other rural festivities; and anything else we can think of that might be even the slightest bit Morris related. Beer and pubs are discussed fairly often for some reason, as are singing, tune trading, the merits of various musical instruments... (you get the idea). Contents The Story of The King's Morris The Morris Dancing team of King's Lynn, THE KING'S MORRIS was formed in 1978. Like most modern teams, they are a revival side; that is; a team formed in a town that does not have a tradition of Morris Dancing. THE KING'S MORRIS are a Cotswold Men's team who perform jigs and dances mainly from the Bledington, Fieldtown, Bampton, Badby, Bucknell and Adderbury 'traditions'. The team performs in public from May until September, usually on Friday or Saturday evenings. Displays are normally given outside pubs in North West Norfolk, the evening often finishing with folk music in the bar. On Bank Holidays the team normally presents dancing tours, travelling further afield in Norfolk and performing during the day. Displays are often given at fetes, galas and other less well defined places and sometimes the team travels to various parts of England to dance with other teams. The team has a tradition of dancing in the King's Lynn area on Boxing Day, but probably the most important day of the year is the First of May (the real May Day); the team begins it by

The idea is, if someone uploads a picture to Wikipedia, it's regarded as released under a GNU Free Documentation License . In other words, from a legal point of view, it seems there's no such thing as simply giving Wikipedia permission to use the photograph, since Wikipedia's contents are freely distributable and modifiable (under the constraints of the GNU FDL). Ideally, there should be a notice on the King John's Morris page to the effect that the photographs were freely distributable according to the GNU FDL. LMS OK, I'll remove the photographs for the time being and get them loaded into the wikipedia domain in the approved manner. Bob Waller edit

VANCOUVER MORRIS MEN
Molly Dances
The Molly dances and tunes performed by the VMM come from the following sources:
  • The Morris Ring archives
These archives contain twenty or so pages of historic information on Molly dancing, including:
    • a summary of the dances available according to the published evidence
    • "A Penny for the Plough Boys" by Russell Wortley
    • "Plough Monday 1933 at Little Downham" by William Palmer
    • "The Comberton Broom Dance" by Cyril Papworth
"Polka Round - The Cambridgeshire Feast Dances and Comberton Broom Dance" by Cyril Papworth
This booklet was obtained from a dancer from Comberton visiting Vancouver.
  • Molly Dancing" by Cyril Papworth
This audio tape, containing both instructional details and music, was obtained from Michael Blanford during the 1994 Travelling Morrice.

  • This commercially available recording contains a number of Molly tunes on side B. (Side A contains Welsh Border tunes.)
  • The Belchamp Ploughboys
The Belchamp Ploughboys were filmed at the 1992 Saddleworth Rushcart festival. While they are believed to be primarily a Cotswold side (Belchamp St Paul Morris Men), they also perform Welsh Border and, on this occasion, Molly. Their sources are believed to be the Morris Ring archives.
THE DANCES
The dances currently performed by the Vancouver M.M. are from two villages in Cambridgeshire - Comberton and Girton.
