What is Ravenswood Morris?
  • May Day: We dance the sun up at dawn (you heard me, dawn) every year on the shores of Lake Michigan, at the lakefront park just east of Morse and Sheridan. This is the approximate location
  • AntiMorris: the same site used for May Day . (See more about the AntiMorris
  • Cultural Festivals: We have danced at several of these over the years, including the Custer Street Faire, the Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival, the Skokie Cultural Festival, The Real Ale Festival , and the Chicago Park District's Unity in Our Community festival held in Pottawattomie Park.
  • Farmer's Markets: Another fun place to dance out. We have occasionally shown up at these events in Evanston and Oak Park, especially later in the summer.
  • Special Occasions:
  • Morris Ales: These are gatherings of Morris dancers held throughout the year in various locations. We attend the Midwest Morris Ale, the location of which changes with the host team each year, and sometimes other ales throughout the region and beyond.
Ravenswood Morris meets to practice most Thursday evenings from 7PM to 9PM. As of September 2002 we have moved to a new practice site

A Morris dance is a form of folk dance Cotswold Morris with handkerchiefs There are records mentioning the Morris Dance dating back to , and it is mentioned in Renaissance documents in France Italy , and Spain . The origins of the term are uncertain, but one of the most widely accepted theories is that the term was " moorish dance" and "Moresco", which was gradually corrupted to "Morris Dance". Another is that it derives from the Romanian "morisca", which means "little mill". In the modern day, it is commonly thought of as a uniquely English activity, although there are around 150 Morris teams in the United States. Expatriates form a larger part of the morris tradition in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. The dance is also practised in Barcelona Spain , where it is performed by girls or women, and in Utrecht , Netherlands. The traditional Căluşari dance of Romania resembles morris in many ways.

APF Chapter 5: Thoughts and Themes
...and Dance
When you mention 'Discworld' and 'dance' in the same breath, you can only be talking about one thing: Morris Dancing, a subject that most non-Brits will be almost completely in the dark about. Brewer has this to say on the subject: Morris Dance : brought to England in the reign of Edward III, when John of Gaunt returned from Spain. In the dance, bells were jingled, and staves or swords clashed. It was a military dance of the Moors or Moriscos, in which five men and a boy engaged; the boy wore a 'morione' or head-piece, and was called Mad Morion Which is interesting, but doesn't really explain anything in a 20th century context. Luckily, a newsgroup like alt.fan.pratchett attracts contemporary Morris Dancers like flies, and for the rest of this section I will give the floor to Rich Holmes: "In a number of books (including Strata Guards! Guards! Reaper Man , and Lords and Ladies ) Pratchett refers to morris dancing. These allusions may be lost on the typical American reader. Picture, then, six men in white shirts and trousers, decorated with ribbons, wearing bells on their legs, in a two-by-three formation the men, not the bells. To a tune played on fiddle or squeezebox, they dance up and down, back and forth, gesturing with big white handkerchiefs in their hands or, maybe, clashing yard-long willow sticks with one another. That's morris dancing, or at least the species of morris dancing that was done in the late 19th century in the Cotswolds region of England.

Cheeky toes
Mark Morris at the Shubert
BY MARCIA B. SIEGEL
The Mark Morris Dance Group has been giving annual performances in Boston under the auspices of the Celebrity Series since 1999. Morris’s company has attained a status and stability enjoyed by only a handful of modern-dance ensembles in today’s unfriendly arts environment. This year’s engagement at the Shubert Theatre included two local premieres and three works from the repertory, with multiple casts for two of them. Dance repertory has its drawbacks, chiefly the danger of an automatic response. Morris splashes a postmodern irreverence into his old and new dances, and that keeps them from complacency. He’s too mainstream now to be thought of as a true subversive, but he’s constantly playing against your expectations. You may not notice he’s doing this because his dance rides so securely on its musical accompaniments, but then all of a sudden you realize you’re not looking at a carbon copy of your memories. In his choreography, Morris is a formalist, the best kind. That is, his dances don’t seem to stand for anything but the pleasure of fitting movement together with music, but in their synergy they add up to more.
