Modern dance primer Defining modern dance Born and raised in the twentieth century, modern dance is often contrasted against ballet for definition. Ballet, the basis for all of Western theatrical dance, is a theatrical performance, using elements from a rich tapestry of traditional movements. Most ballets consist of dancing and music only, although some notable exceptions have included speeches from the characters. On a philosophical level, modern dance grew out of the need to express ideas singular to the twentieth century that could not be expressed through the older language of ballet. One of these ideas, conversely, was the avant-garde concept of themelessness. Around the end of World War II, choreographers began developing minimal dances without theme or emotion, with no pretense of inspiring the audience. Characteristics of modern dance A defining characteristic of modern dance is the singular use of space. While the ballet dancer faces the audience, the modern dancer uses all orientations. In a sense, performing for the audience is not the driving purpose behind a modern dance piece. The dancer's relationship to the music is also noticeably different than in ballet-the ballet dancer's movements correspond to the music; the modern dancer's movements may disregard it entirely. Music may be entirely absent, leaving the sound of the dancer's movements as the only backdrop.

http://smithsonianeducation.org/spotlight/dance.html
Modern Dance Traditionally, European and American theatrical dance centered on ballet. However, in the early twentieth century, it became fashionable in dance circles to rebel against the strictures of tradition. The first two well-known American dancers to break away from classical ballet were Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis. Although their styles differed, Duncan and St. Denis's unconventional approaches opened the door to a new era in dance history: the American modern dance movement of the 1920s. Leaders of this movement, some of whom are listed below, based their works on personal experience, using their bodies as instruments to express such emotions as passion, fear, joy, or grief. Rather than adhering to a set form and a limited range of gestures, as in ballet, the dancer created form as an outgrowth of his or her own communicative impulses. Over time, modern dance has reconciled itself to other traditional dance forms. Perhaps nothing has helped to integrate various styles of dance more than American musical comedy, which draws on ballet, modern, tap, and ethnic folk dancing. In addition, with the advent of television and improved transportation after World War II, audiences and dancers alike have benefited from a greater exposure to dance styles from all over the world. Dancers today use a broader range of techniques, styles, and source materials than ever before.

modern developments in Ballroom Dancing, and ways this method can help the Ballroom dancer
http://alexandertechnique.com/articles/ballroom
Shall We Dance? Ballroom Dancing and the Benefits of the Alexander Technique by Jennifer Mizenko Social Ballroom Dance has made a tremendous come back in the past decade and promises to continue in popularity into the next millennium. People of all ages are returning to partner dances such as swing, waltz, tango and many others. Not only are they returning to these dances they are adding their own twists and steps, making the dances of their own time period and are breaking down rules and barriers that have prohibited change in the competitive ballroom world. There are many theories concerning why ballroom dance has returned to the popular masses. I believe this resurgence has to do with reevaluating relationships and courtships at the end of the millennium. The joys and fears of a society are always expressed through their social dance. During the Roaring Twenties in America, we see the emergence of feminism and the influence of African Americans in the Charleston, through the separation of partners and the use of isolations and poly rhythmic movements. In the 1940's, the energy and desperation of the young G.I. going of to war explodes in his one last Lindy Hop at the U.S.O. canteen. The 1960's and early 70's partners separate again, as America's youth questions authority, explores free love and practices communal living. Today, partners are coming back together on the dance floor. After decades of free love and living with the consequences Americans are making a new commitment to monogamy. The transmission of sexually transmitted diseases proliferated during the 1970's and 80's. We now live in an age where unprotected sexual contact can threaten an individual's life. As a result, people are taking more time to get to know their potential partner's history and background. The resurgence of social ballroom dance reflects an attempt by today's youth to practice Grandma and Grandpa's courtship rituals, in hopes of getting to know their partner better and avoid meaningless liaisons.
