Includes names, culture, costuming, media and dancers directories.
http://www.bdancer.com/med-guide/
Welcome...
to my Middle Eastern Dance (also known as belly dance, danse orientale, danse du ventre, raqs al-sharqi, beledi) site. My intention is to provide a general international resource guide which includes: dancer and musician directories; lists of vendors (including mail-order and online companies); information about and reviews of relevant magazines, books, music and videos; cultural links and many FAQ's (answers to Frequently Asked Questions); a Middle Eastern name guide; and a calendar of upcoming events. Though I am based in the US and many of the listings are also US-based, the intention is to be as international in scope as possible. There is a good bit of international networking and international travel by dancers; it is often useful to be able to locate vendors, teachers and upcoming performances in countries, let alone states or provinces, outside one's own. This icon, scattered throughout these pages, indicates a link to a FAQ (Frequently Asked Question list) or an informative article.

Middle Eastern Culture
The Middle East is built on a magnificent legacy of civilizations dating back to ancient times. Science, the arts, written language, mathematics, a legal system, and other hallmarks of civilization flourished in ancient Sumer, Persia, Egypt, and other parts of the Middle East, leaving a lasting influence on the later cultures of Greece and Rome. Today, the Middle East continues to offer the world a rich cultural contribution, as home to three major world religions, a vibrant entertainment industry, a fascinating tradition of folkloric music and dance, and a growing economic power base. The articles on this page are slanted toward the needs and interests of non-Middle Eastern people, particularly those interested in music and dance from the region.

DC Dance Collective
The MISSION of DC Dance Collective is to make dance available to everyone, regardless of social or economic status, age, gender, or artistic or cultural background, and to establish a studio atmosphere in which students and instructors have artistic choices, share in the artistic process, and learn the value of artistic expression.
What is a
"Dance Collective"?
A Collective, like a traditional dance school, offers a full range of classes for all ages at all levels. The focus of a Collective is to provide support for the artists and their individual talents. Students benefit by being able to choose from a wide range of classes taught by experienced instructors with differing styles and philosophies. A Collective allows the instructors the freedom to create their own curriculum.

BELLY DANCING HISTORY The dance form we call "belly dancing" is derived from traditional women's dances of the Middle East and North Africa. Women have always belly danced, at parties, at family gatherings, and during rites of passage. A woman's social dancing eventually evolved into belly dancing as entertainment ("Dans Oryantal " in Turkish and "Raqs Sharqi" in Arabic). Although the history of belly dancing is murky prior to the late 1800s, many experts believe its roots go back to the temple rites of India. Probably the greatest misconception about belly dance is that it is intended to entertain men. Because segregation of the sexes was common in the part of the world that produced belly dancing, men often were not allowed to be present.

Middle Eastern dance covers all forms of dance from the Middle East proper (Morocco to India), and from as far north as Armenia to the south most tip of the Arabian peninsula, (did I miss anything?). Musicians and vendors are also welcome in the Ring. To see the performance of the web ring click here

Stefan's current ' Ring Office Hours ' are temporarily suspended.
The recent absorption of webring.org by yahoo.com has caused some major problems with adding people to the ring (management tools don't work, entire queue appears to have been thrown away, etc). Rather that have all members of this sizable ring change their page everytime yahoo burps, or submit to their questionable treatment of personal information, I'll be spending October coming up with an alternate solution. Stay tuned. - Stefan

The following are some tips from ringmembers on how to add the necessary ring html fragment under various web editors:
AOL EASY DESIGNER:
For people using the AOL Easy Designer software, there's a drop down menu on top of the screen labelled "advanced." One of the drop down menu selections is something like "insert your own HTML language." Select that and a box appears. Then all you have to do is cut the HTML language that you provide and paste it into the box. It was really simple. - Leslie Lew

About Middle Eastern Dance or "Belly Dance"
"The 'belly' is as much a part of this dance as the feet, the arms, the headyou get the idea. Oriental Dance uses the whole body in the most controlled, fluid, beautiful way one can imagine. Since the abdominal area is the center of balance in the body it is a central point, not just in this dance but all the time. The abdomen is featured in undulations, but so are the arms, the hands and the whole torso. Those who embrace the term 'Belly Dance' as the legitimate name for this dance do so as way to honor the feminine power of giving life." Samra (Galax, VA) "Belly Dancing facilitates an intimate connection for graceful movement, balance, poise, etc., which in turn facilitate enhanced self-esteem and self-confidence. Every Belly Dancer becomes a beautiful woman able to love her body. Age, figure, weight, ability, etc., become unimportant when learning the Joy of Belly Dancing." Amira (Roanoke, VA) "Belly Dancing is a Middle Eastern style of dance for women that supports strength, rhythm, and coordination. It is a great way to exercise and have fun"
