Sister Act Dance Company About Sister Act Gig Information Photo Gallery Contact Sister Act ... Fiona Taylor The Sister Act Dance Company is an all female company presenting dance as an integeral part of the music, harmonising with and enhancing it. The company was born in 1999 from the desire of two sisters, Sara and Fiona, to perform their differing dance styles together. The Sister Act Dance Company specialise in traditional percussive dance, we can also present other non percussive styles too. Our material is drawn from several dance genres including Appalachian clogging, Irish step dance, English clog and French Canadian stepping. We are continually researching dance styles with a view to extending the repertoire and adding new interest to our show. The Sister Act Dance Company can present their dancing in a format suitable for concert venues, theatres or outdoor arena's. Our current show has been designed to be very flexible, allowing excerpts to be taken out for presentation in smaller shorter shows and displays. The complete show lasts approximately 45 minutes and takes you on journey through astounding dance and compelling music. Sister Act also offer workshops in all our dance styles at all levels, from absolute beginner to advanced. Our latest development is a cross rhythms workshop using both Irish and Appalachian steps working together. All workshops are tailored to suit the event. In addition to the dance workshops we can also offer music workshops, where you can share experiences and learn from our long suffering musicians!

    http://www.irishdancefitness.com/
recommend this site! Irish Dance Fitness was created to promote and improve the health and fitness of Irish dancers. The team is made up of a physiotherapist and 2 massage therapists, who first met when they joined Riverdance - The Show While working on the show they were exposed to hundreds of dancers from all over the world who brought with them their own fitness and training techniques- some of which were good, but some not so good! The therapists brought the tools to improve the general health of all of the dancers. As Riverdance developed into a worldwide phenomenon, the physical demands on the dancers grew as they were required to reach and maintain a standard of fitness and performance never before demanded of Irish dancers. The challenge for the therapists was to ensure that these standards could be reached and maintained, and it soon became obvious that a fitness plan was needed that would help the dancers reach their optimum performance level. The aims were to create the perfect warm-up routine, improve and maintain fitness, achieve consistently high performances whilst preventing injury.

    Boys' Irish Step Dancing Costumes
Figure 1.Boys costumes are fairly standard, either black long pants or blazers and kilts worn with white shirts and ties. Modern costumes are quite different from those worn historically at feises. The dance costume has changed greatly from traditional garb. Boys doing Irish dance wear either long black pants or kilts. The girls wear dresses, never kilts for performances. Some schools do allow the girls to wear kilts for practice. Reserving the kilts for boys is done in part because the kilt was the ancient Celtic male garment and in part so the boys aren't dressed like the girls. This would discourage many younger boys fro participating in Irish dancing.
    Costume Developments
    Traditional garb
The dance costume has changed greatly from traditional garb. In the 1800s, dance masters wore hats, swallowtail coats, knee breeches, white stockings, and black shoes with silver buckles probably similar to today's hard shoes. (The expression "cover the buckle" seemed to mean crossing your feet so rapidly while dancing that the shine of the buckle covered the entire area.) In the 1800s, it is likely that female dancers wore ordinary peasant dresses or perhaps their "Sundaybest" and ribbons formed into flowers or crosses.
    The Irish revival
After 1893 with the revival of Irish culture, the quest for a traditional Irish costume began. Pipers adopted the kilt which older male dancers later adopted in the 1910s and 1920s. Ironically, little evidence supports the argument that the kilt originated in Ireland; however, it is clearly Celtic. Today, male dancers wear either kilts or long pants.

    95. Irish Step Dancing And Boys' Costumes
The normal boy s costume for irish dancing is a short jacket, white shirt, tie, irish dance has developed quietly in Ireland for centuries.
    http://histclo.hispeed.com/act/dance/danceir.html
    Irish Step Dancing Costumes
Figure 1.Judges carefully watch this dancer's foot work. The normal boy's costume for Irish dancing is a short jacket, white shirt, tie, shoulder sash, kilt, and kneesocks. The kneesocks usually match either the jacket or the kilt. Some American dancing schools let the boys wear long black pants, but this is not common in Ireland. Irish dance has developed quietly in Ireland for centuries. Irish immigrants brought their traditional dances to America beginning in the 1840s, driven from their homeland by the Great Famine. Their dances had a profound influence on traditional American folk dances like square dancing and their music was a powerful ingredient in country music. Modern Irish dance, however did not begin to become popular until after World War II. The independence of Ireland in 1921, rising income levels after the War, and the increasing interest in Irish heritage by Irish Americans all contributed to the expanding interest in Irish dance. This interest was almost entirely within the Irish community until River Dance introduced Irish dancing to the public at large in the 1990s.
