India can boast of some six major classical dance styles. It becomes a matter of intrigue as to how so many styles evolved within a period of 22 centuries. But we can definitely link them in some way to the dance that existed during the 2nd century BC with the help of a treatise called "Natyashastra." "Natyashastra" actually means the principles of dramaturgy. Then how does a treatise on drama contain invaluable information on dance and music? It was because ancient theatre in India was an amalgamation of all the performing arts. Thus, an actor or an actress also had to be an expert in dance and music. This treatise lays down two aspects of dance that even today are considered canons of Indian Classical dance. 1)"Nritta," or pure dance. 2)"Nritya," or interpretative dance

The Hopi Indians live in Pueblos on and around three Mesas in Northern Arizona in the center of the Navajo reservation. They are bound together by their religion which includes and depends on Kachina spirits. Kachinas are the spirit essence of everything in the world of the Hopi Indians. The Kachina season begins in late December and starts the dances which continue through July. The Kachinas dance for precipitation, the growth of crops and the increase of both wild and domestic plants and animals. Kachina dolls are carved to give to children at these dances. The Hopi Indians carve Kachinas out of cottonwood root. They have been carving them for sale since the mid-1800's and the detail has gotten considerably more fine since the 1960's. A Kachina carved from one piece of wood with very fine detail will be much more expensive than one with more added pieces. One with a lot of motion will be more expensive than a Kachina that is standing still. Collectors should make sure that Kachinas are carved by Hopi Indians as opposed to a Navajo copy. You need: Stick (measuring 1/2" x 24") Yarn Fur Scrap 2 Jingle Bells 12" Suede Cord Pony Beads Feathers Tacky Glue Scissors Instructions: Cut a piece of fur 1" x 2". Wrap it around the end of the stick. Use tacky glue to secure it. Spread a little glue at the end near fur. Wrap yarn tightly around stick adding more glue as needed. Cover about 5" of the stick changing the color if desired. Tie suede lace near the bottom of the yarn wrap. Lace through bells, knot again. String 2 pony beads onto each end. Tie off and trim. Samskriti Foundation Samskriti Foundation is a non profit organization committed to making the traditional performing arts of India, primarily classical music and dance, more accessible to the community, presenting them in superior quality performances and imparting the education required to practice, appreciate and experience them. Established in 1996 and based in Chicago, Illinois, Samskriti offers year-round classes in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Carnatic Music and Yoga. The dance training program has clearly defined achievement levels. The curriculum is designed with the traditional teaching approach modified to suit the needs and experiences of students in the United States. To become a full-fledged dancer it is important to undergo training in three levels: basics like steps and jathis along with introduction to dance theory, followed by dance items and advanced theory, and in the final stage expertise in abhinaya (facial expression), nattuvangam (dance conducting) and opportunities for choreography. The summer program gives intensive training in both practical and theory aspects for students who wish to pursue dance on a more serious level. Students of Samskriti perform regularly in various community events and the senior students accompany Shoba Natarajan, the founder-director on some of her programs. Besides imparting training in dance, music, yoga and dance theory, Samskriti Foundation organizes performances and workshops by local and visiting artists. The highlight of its events is "Gurukulam" – an annual cultural camp for children.

Welcome to www.remashrikant.com T his site is about Rema Shrikant, an accomplished dancer, choreographer and guru in Indian classical dances namely Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam from Vadodara City of Gujarat State in India, who is a member of the International Dance Council – CID ( U NESCO . The site also provides information about her performances, choreography and training. Another section of the site deals with Ayurveda , the Indian System of Medicine and about Kerala Ayurvedic Centre, a health care center, established in Vadodara by V. Srikant Nair. Rema had training in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi and Kathakali under veteran masters. She is a post graduate in Performing Arts with specialization in Bharatanatyam from M.S. University in Vadodara. Rema has performed many solo recitals in Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam in India and abroad. Rema is an excellent teacher in Indian Classical Dances. She has trained many students in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi in her institute called Ellora Centre for Performing Arts in Vadodara which was set up since 1975.
