I Articles I Classifieds ... Indian Cinema I Online Chat I E-Cards I Mohiniattam - The dance of the enchantress. An article by Sunanda Nair. Sunanda Nair, a very fine exponent of Mohiniattam now lives and teaches in the United States. Click here to reach Sunanda's Home Page at www.artindia.net This Indian classical dance form - Mohiniattam - comes from one of the South states of India, Kerala. And the mere mention of Kerala brings up in one’s mind the wondrous and incomparable beauty of its landscape .The scenic backwaters where the palm fronds fill up the Kerala skyline moving gently and gracefully in the breeze, the boats bobbing up and down gently, gracefully and in perfect tune with nature and its rhythm . A Mohini Attam dancer immediately reminds you of this scenic beauty in her dance. The movements are beautiful and lyrical and they are always in an unbroken chain, from one movement very gently and gracefully merging into another . Though the movements are swaying and gentle the presentation comes out with a tremendous and strong impact leaving the spectator in an atmosphere of grace, charm, vitality and a forceful vivacity. The graceful and long limbs of a Mohini Attam dancer brings before your eyes the vision of the palm fronds swaying and dancing in the breeze and the movements are like those of a boat bobbing up and down in the back waters. There is a tremendous amount of force that a Mohini Attam dancer brings out in her performance without which the performance would be lacking in its lustre but this tremendous energy is released in a very controlled and graceful manner which can be achieved only with discipline , hard work and (bhakti) or devotion to the art form.

Learn About Powwow Dancers: Page 1 of 7 - Women's Jingle Next Page - Women's Fancy Shawl These pages will give you an overview of just some of the Powwow Dancing found at the Gathering of Nations and other competitions. Women's Jingle Dance There are many legends surrounding the origin of the Jingle Dress Dance. In the most popular account, a spiritual person dreamed of four women wearing jingle dresses standing before him. In the dream they taught the making of the dress, the sorts of songs that were appropriate and the way the dance was performed. Upon waking, the spiritual person asked family members to assist in making the dresses and carrying out the other aspects of the dream. The dance was a gift from the Creator to the Ojibway people for the purpose of healing. The dance was also present in the Lakota or Dakota tribes and has spread among other tribes. After nearly dying out, the dance regained popularity and is now a common category at most dance competitions. The dress features tiers of seven rows of jingle cones. The cones may have originally been metal lids of Copenhagen snuff and are now made of various other metal materials. Some instances of use of other noise making materials occur, such as bird bones or deer hooves. Dresses are decorated with ribbon, appliqué, paint, and beadwork with matching beaded leggings, moccasins, purse and hair ornaments.

Dances of India
India offers a number of classical dance forms, each of which can be traced to a different part of the country. Each form represents the culture and ethos of a particular region or a group of people.
I am a person who loves to learn new things and as I spent few months in India, I found out many things about Indian dance form. In fact, I was majorly helped by one of my friend, Sulini, who is a professional Kathakali dancer. I came to know her, in one of the performances in US and somehow I was very impressed by the moments and the emotions shown in the dance.
Interestingly, she not only knew her dance but also about others. My perfect guide for me in India who helped me throughout my visit . " So, what do you want to know? " asked Sulini. "Everything, about Indian dance form" I replied.
" Hey! first you tell me about your dance, Kathakali" . She told me that Kathakali literally means story-play and is an elaborate dance depicting the victory of truth over falsehood. A Striking feature of Kathakali is the use of elaborate make-up and colourful costumes. This is to emphasize that the characters are superbeings from another world, and their make-up is easily recognisable to the trained eye as satvik or godlike, rajasik or heroic, and tamasik or demonic. Interesting, I thought.

Indian Dance in Australia
Gould, Ross: Padma Menon in 'Yaathra - the journey', 1992 Research Materials Other Resources Since the late 1940s Australian audiences have been exposed to the highly stylised features of Indian dance, themes of Hindu mythology and the epic legends of the Ramayana and Mahabharata that are commonly expressed through dance. Over time they have also experienced the full gamut of Indian classical dance forms including Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri, Chhau and Mohiniattam. Although Indian dance is known as the oldest classical dance tradition in the world, centuries of foreign rule in India had seen it almost completely neglected. The impetus of the Indian independence movement reignited interest in traditional art forms and brought about a renaissance of Indian dance during the 1930s. Australian dancer Louise Lightfoot played a critical role in the revival of the Kathakali and Manipuri dance forms in and outside of India. She first visited India in 1938 and spent considerable time there studying dance. She organised tours by the Kathakali dancer Ananda Shivaram throughout India and also to Australia in 1947 and 1974. Billed as the first Indian dancer to visit Australia, Shivaram’s performances were extremely influential, as were the classes he conducted with local dancers. Lightfoot also staged her own Indian inspired productions in Australia and was responsible for the Australian tour of a Manipuri troupe in 1957.

Ghost Dance
The principal ceremonial rite of a peculiar Indian religion with originated about 1887 with Wovoka, alias jack Wilson, an Indian of the Piute tribe in Nevada. He claimed to have obtained his revelation in a vision in which he had been taken into the spirit world and talked with God , Who had promised a speedy return to the old Indian life through the reincarnation of all the dead Indians, the buffalo and other game, upon a new earth, which was already advancing from the west and would push before it the alien whites to their own proper country beyond the ocean, while the Indian believers would be taken up, as by wings, upon the new surface, and there reunited with their old-time friends. By performance of the prescribed dance and songs the consumation would be hastened, while in the frequent hypnotic trances brought about by the efforts of the priests the more sensitive subjects were enabled to anticipate the event in visions. The belief spread among nearly all of the tribes eastward of the Missouri, and produced much excitement for several years, until several dates of the great change had passed without realization of the prophecy, when the ferment gradually subsided. In Dakota it lead indirectly to an outbreak among the

Indian dance group debuts on campus

Though it has been in existence for four years, NAACHO will perform its first show ever on campus this weekend at Frist. Even if some of our choreography is cheesy, Naacho, Princeton University's Indian Dance Troupe, is not to be confused for a Latin dance troupe or a Mexican appetizer spelled incorrectly.
The name actually means "Let's Dance" in Hindi, and as our name suggests we do. And despite the cheesy choreography, our dances are actually inline with India's movie scene, Bollywood, from which many of the troupe's songs come. The troupe got started in the fall of 1999, when I looked around at mostly the usual suspects for activities on campus and noticed a void. Indian dance is a beautiful and expressive form, and I wanted to share that with the rest of Princeton. I embraced our diversity, welcoming all ethnicities and genders, and requiring no experience. From the response I received, it was obvious that many other people on campus reciprocated my interest in Indian dance.
