Imaging and Imagining the Ghost Dance: James Mooney's Illustrations and Photographs, 1891-1893

Of all the incidents in recent American Indian history, the Ghost Dance of 1890 is probably without equal in evocative power. From the ecstatic dancing, the mysteriously patterned clothing, to the bloody snows of Wounded Knee, the Ghost Dance is pervaded with visually powerful images. But because they are so powerful, those images must be constantly examined; one must see as well as look.
Fundamental to the way the Ghost Dance of 1890 has been perceived and visualized are the images James Mooney used to illustrate his 1896 Smithsonian Institution Bureau of American Ethnology report on the ceremonial. Besides portraits of the principal as well as the peripheral participants, Sitting Bull the Hunkpapa and Sitting Bull the Arapaho, scenes of Wounded Knee and of the survivors of the massacre, Mooney also included eight illustrations of the Dance in progress. In the course of the century since Mooney published, his illustrations, and the photographs upon which they are based, have continued to be used to evoke and to illustrate the Ghost Dance. But the photographs themselves have seldom, if ever, been examined for their ethnographic and historical content, let alone for what they can say about the processes of imaging and imagining the Ghost Dance.

Dance in India Dance in India, is rooted in age-old tradition. This vast sub-continent has given birth to varied forms of dancing, each shaped by the influences of a particular period and environment. These pristine forms have been preserved through the centuries, to become a part of our present culture, a living heritage which is both our pride and delight. Nurtured in temples, princely courts or villages, dance has moved into the auditorium of today, bringing pleasure to many more people, in far-flung regions. It is now possible to appreciate the lyrical grace of the Manipuri dance of North-Eastern India in, say, Gujarat. This dance-form arising out of Krishna-bhakti, is sinuous in its movements and romantic in its concept, celebrating a divine theme which is meaningful to people all over the country. Similarly, the sophistry of Kathak, which flowered at the courts of the Mughal princes with its accelerated tempo, intricate foot-movements, and subtle facial expressions, evokes a resplendent past common to us all. The abundant largesse of dance in South India, from the Bharatanatyam of Tamil Nadu, to the Kathakali dance-drama of Kerala, to the Kuchipudi of Andhra, has become part of the melting-pot of culture enriching the life of any Indian today. For, to witness the strength and vigour of Kathakali as it enacts episodes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, is an education in itself. The extremely stylised gestures, the elaborate make-up, the masks and the splendid costumes of these all-male dancers, recreates an incomparable sense of pageantry. Bharatanatyam, the temple-maiden's dance of devotion, has a classic quality which is as daunting as it is beautiful. The rigorous precision of foot and hand movements, the eloquent range of expression depicted through eyes and mouth, and the total linear consonance of body is exacting and exciting in its perfection.

71. Kathak
KathakAn indian Classical dance, Ruby Mishra one of the prominent dancer of kathak.
http://geocities.com/kathakdance/kathak.htm
Kathak north Indian style of classical dance, characterized by rhythmic footwork danced under the weight of more than 100 ankle bells, spectacular spins, and the dramatic representation of themes from Persian and Urdu poetry alongside those of Hindu mythology. Kathak arose from the fusion of Hindu and Muslim cultures that took place during the Mughal period (1526-1761). More than any other South Asian dance form, kathak expresses the aesthetic principles of Islamic culture. The influence of kathak is also visible in the Spanish flamenco tradition.
T he origins of the kathak style lie in the traditional recounting of Hindu myths by Brahmin priests called kathiks, who used mime and gesture for dramatic effect. Gradually, the storytelling became more stylized and evolved into a dance form. With the arrival in northern India of the Mughals, kathak was taken into the royal courts and developed into a sophisticated art form; through the patronage of the Mughal rulers, kathak took its current form. The emphasis of the dance moved from the religious to the aesthetic. In accordance with the aesthetics of Islamic culture, abhinaya (the use of mime and gesture) became more subtle, with emphasis placed on the performer's ability to express a theme in many different ways and with infinite nuances.
T here are two main schools, or gharanas, of kathak dance, both of which are named after cities in northern India and both of which expanded under the patronage of regional princes. The Lucknow gharana developed a style of kathak that is characterized by precise, finely detailed movements and an emphasis on the exposition of thumri, a semiclassical style of love song. The Jaipur gharana required a mastery of complicated pure dance patterns. Nowadays, however, performers present a blend of kathak based on the styles of both gharanas.

Without the knowledge of dance the knowledge
of sculptural art cannot be known
This is a well known line from the Vishnudharmottara Purana, a Sanskrit text which describes techniques of painting and sculpture. So why would a book on sculpture have a line which gives so much merit to dance. This is because Indian dance and sculpture have shared a common vocabulary through out history. The idea is best illustrated through examples and what better example than the famous icon of Nataraja. Nataraja - translated either as the 'dancing king' or the 'king of dancers', is the deity Shiva represented as a dancing icon. This image was a contribution of philosophers and sculptors in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Let me begin with the myth of the Nataraja image. Once upon a time in the Daruka forest a group of very enlightened sages lived with their wives. Over a period of time they became very arrogant and were filled with pride about their powers. They became so arrogant that they considered themselves more powerful than the gods and everyone else in the Universe. In many texts on dance Shiva is considered as the one who taught the art of dance to mankind. To this day the figure of Nataraja is held in high regard by all classical Indian dancers. This image has been used countless times all over the world to represent Indian culture. What is this image? Does it have any meaning besides being a beautiful depiction of movement? Let us look at the philosophical significance of this image.

Last Updated: September 19,2005 History of Indian Dance The dance heritage of India is at least 5000 years old. A dancing girl figurine was found in the ruins of Mohenjodaro and is dated approximately 2nd Century B.C. Many group dancing sequences are depicted in exquisite rock paintings of Bhimbetaka caves of Madhya Pradesh. The apsaras (Celestials) dancers are carved at the gateways of Sanchi . The wall paintings of Ajanta and Ellora, the sculptures of Khajuraho, the temple walls of Hoysala dynasty, stand ample evidence for popularity of Indian dances from ancient times. Through the centuries the dances have been used as a vehicle of worship and expression of emotions in India. The temple dancers (Devadasis) have led a very austere lives in order to perform sacred dances to please Gods and Goddesses. The Devadasi system is still prevalent in some states of India. In Karnataka they are dedicated to the Goddess Yellamma of Savadatti. In Orissa , they are appointed to perform various activities of the temple.
