[28 KB] Bhangra - Folk dance of Punjab
[19 KB] Bhangra - Folk dance of Punjab
[23 KB] Bhangra got its start in a region called Punjab. This region is currently divided among India and Pakistan. It is called Punjab because of the five rivers that flow through the region: Jeelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej. The region is ideal for farming and is the breadbasket of India.
Bhangra appeared in Punjab hundreds of years ago. In the beginning it was sung during times of harvest to make the day go by quicker. However, presently it is played at joyous occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and other get togethers. There are numerous instruments that are used in Bhangra music including the bhangra dhol, tumbi, chemta, tabla and harmonium. In the past couple of decades the music has been mixed with techno, disco, hip hop, drum and bass, reggae and rap. Bhangra

[28 KB] Bharatnatyam - A classical dance
[26 KB] Bharatha Natyam is a composite art, whose message is not merely to the senses, but to the soul of the dancer and of the perceiver. This dance form cannot be adequately danced by anyone without reverence for technique and for spiritual life. All this is said with lucidity and ease in order to help audiences to become better spectators and dance students to bring a more self-conscious analytical approach to the movement of learning. Also, to support this movement of learning we would be defining the different stages of learning as in initiation, training and performance while paying a lot of attention to practise during these stages. All information presented are views of the academy on Bharatha Natyam and may be influenced by the great scholars and historians who are our friends and who have generously provided help and assistance in variety of ways.

42. Mythological Origins And Developent Of Indian Music (Sangeet)
Describes the traditional Hindu origins of indian music and dance including a historical account of its development.
http://chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/myth_origin.html
MYTHOLOGICAL ORIGINS OF SANGEET
by David Courtney, Ph.D. We must look at mythology to really see the significance that Indian music sangeet has to Indian society. This is easily illustrated in the story concerning its origin. Perhaps the clearest mythological raison de etre Natya-Shastra (Rangacharya 1966) Once, a long time ago, during the transitional period between two Ages it so happened that people took to uncivilised ways, were ruled by lust and greed, behaved in angry and jealous ways with each other and not only gods but demons, evil spirits, yakshas and and such like others swarmed over the earth. Seeing this plight, Indra and other gods approached god Brahma and requested him to give the people a toy (Kridaniyaka), but one which could not only be seen but heard and this should turn out a diversion (so that people gave up their bad ways) Although it was decided to give the celestial art of sangeet to mankind, a suitable human had to be found who was capable of receiving this gift. Sangeet had always been in the realm of the demigods ( gandharva . A super-human of superior spiritual ability was required to convey this celestial artform to the world of man. It fell upon the great sage Narada to be the first mortal recipient of this divine art. Through Narada, we are indebted for the presence of classical music.

50. Folk Music Of Rajasthan, Traditional Rajasthani Music, Music & Dances Of Rajasth
Haunting, fullthroated music and vigorous, rhythmic dances in colourful attires - in the harsh deserts of this indian state.
http://www.rajasthandiary.com/rajdiary/music.htm

Harmonious diversity
Musical instruments Folk dances Famous artistes Music and dance are deeply ingrained in the life of Rajasthanis. The cool stillness of the desert after the searing heat of the day and the upsurge of life in the short-lived rainy season or spring are filled with soulful, full-throated music and rhythmic dance.
Harmonious diversity
All the regions of Rajasthan have their distinct folk entertainment. The dance styles differ and so do the songs. Interestingly, even the musical instruments are different. The hilly tracts of central and southern Rajasthan are rich in community entertainments because of the lifestyle of tribes like the Bhils, Meena, Banjaras, Saharias and Garasias. Eastern Rajasthan is fertile and affluent, with plenty of patrons to sustain professional entertainers like the Bhats, Kamads, Bhopas, Kacchi Ghodi dancers and Kathputli (puppeteer). People in the harsh scantily-populated desert areas of Western Rajasthan have very little leisure for merrymaking. Therefore, in this region, entertainment is provided by professional performers like the Bhats, Dholis, Mirasis, Nats, Sargadas and Bhands.

The third aspect of the Supreme Being is the process of dissolution of all creation, a precursor to the fresh beginning of the process of creation...(and) is represented by Lord Shiva - the third of the Hindu Trinity... Shiva controls death in the physical world and since birth and death are complementary to each other, Shiva is revered as the master of all birth and death... Shiva brings about the unification of the transient with the transcendental and of all that illusory with the ultimate truth... In himself he assimilates the characteristics of the male and the female, creator and the destroyer, celibacy and eroticism…

In the form of the Lord of Dance, Shiva is known as Nataraj and is worshipped by all Classical Indian dancers.
    Guru Prakash Yadagudde
This is a picture of Guru Shri Prakash Yadagudde. He won 2 scholarships from his native Bangalore, to train further in New Delhi and Madras under U.S. Krishna Rao. He has also trained with Chitra Visweswaran. He has taught over 20 students to Arangetram level and has been teaching in Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan for approx. 15 years. I have had the honour of seeing him dance twice. He is, without a doubt, my favourite dancer.
    Male Dancers?!
You may not think that male dancers take to Classical Indian dance styles, but in fact there are many top-notch classical Indian dancers who are male:
A few examples are the late Uday Shankar, Birju Maharaj and Pratap Pawar (Kathak),
Ram Gopal, U.S. Krishna Rao, V.P. Dhananjayan, Raghunath Manet, Mavin Khoo and Dr. Francis Barboza (Bharata Natyam)
