Local Chinese history is displayed on Third Avenue in a 1920s-era Chinese mission designed by Irving Gill. In a new building across the street, the works of modern Chinese artists are featured. Much of this area has been rebuilt and its history essentially forgotten, but the museum houses a permanent exhibit of artifacts uncovered during the neighborhood's redevelopment. Photographs, artwork and objects reflecting everyday life in San Diego's Chinatown are showcased here in the old wing of the museum. The museum opened an extension across the street in October of 2004. This modern venue hosts local and traveling exhibits of contemporary woodworking, carving and paintings.

African Dance: An Artistic, Historical and Philosophical Inquiry is a welcome addition to this burgeoning scholarship. Bringing together some of the leading scholars in dance, this collection helps to lay a foundation for a fuller understanding of the importance of and challenges in studying African dance. Kariamu Welsh Asante, a professor in the African American studies department at Temple University and director of the Institute for African Dance Research and Performance, edited the text and dedicated the book to Pearl Primus, a scholar-choreographer who conducted extensive field research on dance in Africa.

DANCING ON THE STAGE OF THE MARYINSKY THEATER, A LEGENDARY STRETCH OF WOOD FLOOR IN INTERNATIONAL BALLET. THE COMPANY NEUMEIER HAS spent the last thirty years building performed three of his full-length ballets to enthusiastic capacity audiences. Hamburg Ballet was one of only three international ballet troupes invited to perform at the Maryinsky Theater as part of this former imperial capital's summer-long celebration of its 300th anniversary (the other two were New York City Ballet and The Royal Ballet). Hamburg Ballet's week of performances proved a pinnacle of cultural and diplomatic achievement for its director, the 61-year-old Milwaukee-born Neumeier, and the fifty-three-member German ballet company he has nurtured into international visibility.

Historical Square Dance Exhibitions For best viewing use 800X600 High Color We Americans have a unique contribution to make to the world-wide cultural scene. However, the majority of our citizens are unaware of the richness of the art forms which have originated here and are unique to our land. The California Heritage Dancers are dedicated to preserving through exhibitions, the rich heritage of what has become known as American Square Dancing. In order not to lose these old time dances, the California Heritage Dancers was organized in 1986 recruiting members from various square dance clubs in Southern California. Extensive research has resulted in a large repertoire of varied dances from the 1700's to 1996. The dancers have created authentic costuming and music to complete the picture. A video tape is available that will take you on "A Journey Through America's Folk Dance" highlighting some of the Heritage Dancer's routines and provides a unique look at the roots of modern square dancing. For more information just e-mail.

A few of them are drawn from the Library of Congress Subject Headings, but most are unique to this finding aid. The description of the dances are, for the most part, based on the New Harvard Dictionary of Music, edited by Don Michael Randel (Belknap Press, 1986). Classical music Music Search Example
Instrumental music, sacred songs, opera, songs with German, French, or Italian words, and spirituals. There is a general problem of definition for this music because of our understanding of "classical" versus "popular" music today. In the nineteenth century, when many of these pieces were published, there really was little distinction between the two. There may have been a notion that some music was "uplifting" and some was degenerate, but the idea of "good" or "classical" is a fairly recent value judgement.

The Tapestry Historic Dance Ensemble
is dedicated to the research, re-construction and performance of historic social dance. The group's repertoire encompasses historical eras from the late 15th through the mid-19th centuries, ranging from the elegant dance forms of the European Courts to the social dances of but a few generations past in America. Court dances, country dances and ballroom dances, researched from period sources, are showcased in diverse and entertaining programs presented in colorful and authentically styled historic costume.
Few activities bring Social History more fully to life than dances from past eras; they capture the mood of an earlier age, its music, its fashions, and manners. In recent years, a growing public appreciation of our cultural heritage has awakened interest in recreating the dances of days gone by. This revival incorporates both serious scholarship and research, and the preservation, through performance and participation, of social dances from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. The Tapestry Historic Dance Ensemble is available for performances, workshops, and programs of various lengths, themes, and historic eras. Each program is individually created for the presentation site, event or theme, and includes narration about the dances, social customs, and fashions of the historic era represented.

"New Orleans Jazz" did not first develop and thrive only within the city limits. In the early decades of the music's development, musicians (both individually and in bands) flowed both ways from the city to numerous small and medium sized towns in the surrounding area.
Mandeville Louisiana is a town on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, to the north of New Orleans. Regular ferry boat service connected the town with New Orleans. Bands played on the boats and in dancehalls in Mandeville and nearby towns.

Artists such as Bunk Johnson, Buddy Petit , Papa Celestin, George Lewis. Kid Ory, Edmond Hall, Chester Zardis and others played here.
Front of the Dew Drop, Mandeville The Dew Drop Hall is a simple structure. It is raised on brick piers (common to protect from periodic floods in the era before better drainage and flood protection levees). It is a plain rectangular cypress wood building, without electricity or indoor plumbing. The front and back each have a doorway; the sides a row of windows. The windows have no glass nor screens, only simple wooden shutters that can be opened or closed.
Dew Drop from the side The interior is a single-room, mostly an open floor for dancing, with plain benches along the sides of the walls. In the back is the typical old-style raised bandstand.
