Description Located at opposite ends of the Islamic World, Central Asia and North Africa possess rich and distinct cultures. Yet in spite of these differences, women's dances share some intriguing similarities. In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Central Asian Dance Camp, we will explore the historical, artistic and spiritual links between these two regions. Set at the heart of the Great Silk Road, Central Asia is crossed by an ancient network of caravan routes that linked China with the Mediterranean. The dances of the region reflect the rich legacy of many cultures, both indigenous and foreign. Through commerce and conquest, Iranian, Turkic, Indian, Arabic, Chinese, and Mongolian elements have entered dance styles of the region.

A Historical context for Dances of Life
Dance is a fundamental vehicle of cultural expression throughout Oceania. Here Oceania refers to the Pacific Islands and the Pacific diaspora extending from Australia and New Zealand, including the indigenous peoples of those two nations, to Canada, the USA, England and Europe. Oceania also refers to those groups culturally divided into Polynesia ("many" islands) in the east, Micronesia ("small" islands) in the central and northwest Pacific, and Melanesia ("black" islands) in the west. While these terms have problematic European origins, they have been taken on by people in both the islands and diaspora as meaningful ways of describing their wider cultural identities. Haka . "Ha" means breath. "Ka" means on fire or fiery words. Put them both together, fiery words. Pacific peoples, like indigenous groups across the world, have carried and passed on their knowledge through oral, visual and embodied traditions for millennia. The performance arts reflect spiritual, political, social, economic and aesthetic values and practices. We can learn much about a people and their history by paying attention to dance and body movement.
Dance, music, architecture, navigation and the arts have always functioned as the primary vehicles for creating, recording, sharing and transforming knowledge. These forms reflect codes for conduct and responsibility, provide the glue for social cohesion and mediate relations between the human, supernatural and ancestral realms. From as early as the 16th century in Guam to as late as the 20th century in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, European colonialism, Christianity and the written word have altered the style and content of dance and music in most islands. Still, these art forms continue to function as the most visible markers of cultural and national identities. Today cultural dances build self-esteem and instill pride in both performers and audiences, particularly in the younger generations who exist at the nexus of competing local, national and global forces.

University of Sydney (updated 24 July 2005) INTRODUCTION Just as there are a number of different forms of theatre in the west (opera, ballet, drama, vaudeville, etc.) so there are several forms in Japan (Kabuki, Kyogen, Shimpa, etc). One of these, the Noh theatre, has a place in Japanese society that bears some analogies to the place Shakespearian drama has in the West: the dramas and their stories are well known; they were composed several hundred years ago (Kusano, 1978,105); they are in the archaic language of that time (Ito, 1979, 271); were performed only by male actors until recently (Kusano, 1978, 118); assume other customs, dress, habits, and society of that time; are based on older myths and legends current then; and probably survive because of the allegorical illumination they cast on the timeless concerns of the human condition. Noh theatre differs from Shakespearian theatre in being some two-hundred years older, having a wider repetoire (about 240 pieces, compared with 38 for Shakespeare (Shakespeare, 1937)), having a more balanced mixture of music and dance embedded in the drama, using masks for many of the actors (Kusano, 1978, 108), and of course: being in Japanese.
Koomote ORIGINS The Noh pieces which are performed today were written by a small number of dramatists. Of these, Zeami (1363-1441) was the greatest, being responsible for 100 of the 240 Noh pieces. His father, Kanami, also wrote many of the pieces (Kusano, 1978,108). Zeami's son in-law, Zenchiku, was also a Noh master and contributed some pieces (Ortolani, 1983, 147). The close family inter-relationship of these authors was conditioned by Japanese society at that time, in which a son had an obligation to follow his father's occupation. This was augmented by the custom of Master artists of adopting their major proteges into their family (Japan, 1975, 6).
