Flash Report, 7-21: Brain Hard-on
Blowing the Cobwebs out of Critical Fannies By Chris Dohse
"I'm in Washington, so I have to give you the truth." Robert L. Lynch, CEO of Americans for the Arts, in his keynote address to Dancing in the Millennium, July 20, 2000. (During the short program Wednesday, the Pola Nirenska Memorial Award, named for a matriarch of D.C. modern dance, was given to local pedagogues Mary Day and Melvin Deal, neither of whom were present. Carmen de Lavallade popped up to add encouragement. The inauguration of the Metro D.C. Dance Awards, fashioned after NYC's Bessies, was announced.) To give an accurate impression of attending this thing, it is useful to analyze the biographies of its participants. For instance, looking through the first hundred names in the program, listed alphabetically, I find that 51 of them teach or administrate at colleges or universities. Nineteen have written books. Sixteen hold PhDs and seventeen are male. Certain nametags bristle with academic celebrity. It seems like everyone knows everyone but you, and just how much you don't know about them or the field soon becomes readily apparent. Presenting a paper to this crowd takes gumption. They fall on the slightest misrepresentation or inaccuracy like a cloud of vultures. They quote each other, quibble over citations, challenge all shades of gray. It seems popular to refer to dance as a language or code. The ghost of Balanchine hovers prominently. One strategy is to place a specificity or codicil of the historic canon within a larger arena of thought. Another is to take a general topic and dissect its toenails.

Students particularly enjoy the opportunity for performance, along with stimulating classes by dance historians and performers. See Comments from workshop participants below. The theme of this year's Amherst Early Music Festival is "Music of the British Isles." The Historical Dance Program reflects that theme, with a focus on dance materials from England in the dance classes, and with two staged productions: Henry Purcell's opera, Dido and Aeneas (1689), and Ben Jonson's masque

Historical Video Archive Project
... Articles Did you know that videotape does not live forever? Its lifetime is only 12-20 years... That means the works recorded directly to videotape may soon begin to disappear forever. Video FAQ How long do video tapes last?
How do I know if my video tapes are begining to fail?

How can I entend the life of my video tapes?

What if my video tape is already failing?
...
How can I include my video in the archive?

Of course, you can copy aging videotapes on to new tapes, but each time you do, there is a significant loss of quality. By the third or fourth generation, the copy quality is so degraded it is virtually useless. The solution is to copy these works onto a digital medium. While this still creates some loss in the initial transfer, they can be returned to video without any further degradation. Even digital mediums like CDs and DVDs have a limited lifetime. But the good news is that aging CDs and DVDs can be copied to new disks with no loss of quality - the copy is exactly as the original was.

Frame Escape! Site Updated on 12/14/03 The Ottoman Traders Guild portrays a Ottoman Turkish trading caravan of the mid-1500's. During the Renaissance, for our purposes 1520 - 1600, trade was happening either through walking caravans traveling from city to city or by merchant ship. Our caravan travels established trade routes starting in Constantinople and traveling "around the known world". We are primarily a Trading Caravan and represent the several different classes: merchant traders, entertainers, fighting men, slaves, and thieves, that would have joined on caravan. Several different nationalities are represented and several different languages spoken. We portray characters in any of these general categories: Merchants, Fighting Men, Entertainers, and Wayfaring Travelers. Out of respect for all faiths, we do not portray any form of religion. [19 KB] Bhangra - Folk dance of Punjab
[23 KB] Bhangra got its start in a region called Punjab. This region is currently divided among India and Pakistan. It is called Punjab because of the five rivers that flow through the region: Jeelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej. The region is ideal for farming and is the breadbasket of India.
Bhangra appeared in Punjab hundreds of years ago. In the beginning it was sung during times of harvest to make the day go by quicker. However, presently it is played at joyous occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and other get togethers. There are numerous instruments that are used in Bhangra music including the bhangra dhol, tumbi, chemta, tabla and harmonium. In the past couple of decades the music has been mixed with techno, disco, hip hop, drum and bass, reggae and rap. Bhangra

[28 KB] Bharatnatyam - A classical dance
[26 KB] Bharatha Natyam is a composite art, whose message is not merely to the senses, but to the soul of the dancer and of the perceiver. This dance form cannot be adequately danced by anyone without reverence for technique and for spiritual life. All this is said with lucidity and ease in order to help audiences to become better spectators and dance students to bring a more self-conscious analytical approach to the movement of learning. Also, to support this movement of learning we would be defining the different stages of learning as in initiation, training and performance while paying a lot of attention to practise during these stages. All information presented are views of the academy on Bharatha Natyam and may be influenced by the great scholars and historians who are our friends and who have generously provided help and assistance in variety of ways.

40. Mythological Origins And Developent Of Indian Music (Sangeet)
Describes the traditional Hindu origins of Indian music and dance including a historical account of its development.
http://chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/myth_origin.html
MYTHOLOGICAL ORIGINS OF SANGEET
by David Courtney, Ph.D. We must look at mythology to really see the significance that Indian music sangeet has to Indian society. This is easily illustrated in the story concerning its origin. Perhaps the clearest mythological raison de etre Natya-Shastra (Rangacharya 1966) Once, a long time ago, during the transitional period between two Ages it so happened that people took to uncivilised ways, were ruled by lust and greed, behaved in angry and jealous ways with each other and not only gods but demons, evil spirits, yakshas and and such like others swarmed over the earth. Seeing this plight, Indra and other gods approached god Brahma and requested him to give the people a toy (Kridaniyaka), but one which could not only be seen but heard and this should turn out a diversion (so that people gave up their bad ways) Although it was decided to give the celestial art of sangeet to mankind, a suitable human had to be found who was capable of receiving this gift. Sangeet had always been in the realm of the demigods ( gandharva . A super-human of superior spiritual ability was required to convey this celestial artform to the world of man. It fell upon the great sage Narada to be the first mortal recipient of this divine art. Through Narada, we are indebted for the presence of classical music.
