Although a big success there and in many parts of the world, the concept wasn't an easy sell to an American network. The set design on the Television City soundstage is almost identical to the British version, with the audience on three sides of a dance floor, a staircase for grand entrances, a raised podium for the three judges and an orchestra. Want to taste the food, hear the music and enjoy the dance of Hawaii? Go to a luau. There, in one place, you can sample the culture of Old Hawaii and perhaps other Pacific islands under a starry sky, in balmy evening air filled with the scent of flowers.
Chances are the luau you attend will be held outdoors, possibly on the broad lawn of a hotel, not far from the sound of surf. As sunset tints the sky, guests are greeted with lei , sip a colorful tropical cocktail and watch the imu ceremony, in which a succulent roasted kalua pig is removed from an underground oven.
The pig has been baking for hours, stuffed with hot stones and wrapped in banana and ti leaves. The tender pork is delicious, a fitting main dish for a traditional feast.
photo Brett Uprichard Its perfect partner is a food which, to the uninitiated, may appear much less appetizing. Poi has been the subject of many a joke likening it to library paste, but the staple food of Hawaii is a tangy accompaniment to the salty dishes on the luau table. Made from mashed taro mixed with water, poi has a texture something like pudding. Try it with a bite of kalua pig, or with another luau favorite, lomi salmon. Unlike the pork and poi, which would have been familiar to the ancients, lomi salmon is a relatively recent addition to Hawaiian cuisine, mixing chopped tomatoes and onions with the salt salmon introduced to the Islands by early seagoing visitors.
But for those who really want to try Hawaiian food, the luau is a good bet, with

by Tracey Lakainapali
When we think of Hawaii, two things often come to mind: the Aloha Spirit and the Hula. Both were born in a time long past when in legend Gods, Goddesses and humans walked the earth. The origins of hula are open to interpretation. Some believe it came from the ancient civilization of Mu, some claim it was homegrown, while others trace it to Tahiti or some other foreign land. For both ancient and modern Hawaiians, the hula is the essence of life itself. It links them with the universe and makes them one with all creation. The question of whether the original hula dancers were only men, as some Hawaiians claim today, is open to debate. There are, however, many records and legends which tell of both men and women performing the hula. What is known for certain is that women were doing the dance when Captain Cook and his crew first arrived in the islands in 1778. The use of the word hula to describe dance is specific to the Hawaiians, and not other Polynesian cultures. The Samoans dance the sasa, fa'ataupati

111. The Obon In Hawai'i
veterans groups sponsored a bon dance to honor the war dead from Hawaii. in the music and dance of one of the prefectures of Hawaii s immigrants.
http://www.loc.gov/bicentennial/propage/HI/hi_s_akaka4.html
The Obon in Hawai'i This Buddhist observance honoring the ancestors came to Hawai`i in the late 19th century with a large wave of Japanese immigrants. Obon is observed in Hawai`i during the summer months, when family members place flowers and food on the graves of ancestors and friends and recite the nembutsu, an expression of appreciation, before the family altar. The centerpiece of the ceremony is the bon dance. It is believed that the first bon dances were performed in the fields where the immigrants labored, and in between houses on the plantation. Later dances were held in temple courtyards. As work schedules began to conform to the Western five-day week, bon dances began to be scheduled for weekends. Bon dance clubs in recent years have enlivened the bon dance tradition. Each bon dance club specializes in the music and dance of one of the prefectures of Hawaii's immigrants. Some clubs provide musicians and group of dancers to lead the dancing, while others provide only the music. Over the years, the ceremony and the practice of Buddhism itself underwent significant change to adapt to the islands' multicultural society. The 23-page essay submitted as part of the project explores the history of that transformation and the present place of the Obon in Hawaiian culture. Accompanying the essay are a 25-minute videotape of a bon dance performance, 30 8 x 10 color photos, and an audio cassette of bon dance music.

Merry Monarch Remembered
By Veronica S. Schweitzer
"Hula is the language of the heart,
and therefore the heartbeat
of the Hawaiian people."
David Kalakaua,
King of Hawaii, 1874 to 1891.

Sixty years after Queen Ka'ahumanu, King Kamehameha's wife, had forbidden the dance in the name of Christian values, Kalakaua gave hula back its glorious crown. He became known as the Merrie Monarch. Under his reign, Hawaiian traditions revived and took on a new life. Ancient sports were once again celebrated and the hula was reborn.
But with the King's death, hula, that indigenous expression of a whole culture, in dance and story telling, became once again a rare event. Some might even have wondered if the chants, the movements, the tradition, were lost all together. The missionaries, it seemed, had finally won. The overtly sensual movements, the scarcely clad men and women had been a disgrace to the education the church so desperately taught.
Fortunately, hidden form exposure, the sacred knowledge lived on. And a few decades later, in the early and mid 1900's, hula reemerged to lure tourists to the islands, even though at first it was a commercialized "grass-skirt-girl" version of the ancient dance.

(U-WIRE) HONOLULU A new pastime has swept through the walls of the University of Hawaii Gamesroom this semester, causing one man to lose 15 pounds, another to develop a $160-a-month habit and countless others to befriend the nearest change machine for quarters. Gavin Correa had to buy new clothes because he lost so much weight. Playing Dance Dance Revolution for more than a year now, Correa claims to have once spent more than $50 a day on the video game. "I can't stand still for very long," Correa said. "I like the stress-relieving aspect of it. It gives you adrenaline and tests your up-and-down reflexes. You see the up arrow on the screen, you stomp your foot down on the foot pad. It can be very confusing." Dance Dance Revolution, a Japanese video game made by Konami, has combined some innovative ingredients for the ultimate in arcade fun. Lying somewhere between the call/response gameplay of Simon and the coordination of Twister, DDR is a beat game where music and rhythm play integral roles. Players "dance" to music by hitting four large buttons on a floorpad in order to match the arrows displayed on the screen.

PLU Hawaii Club's annual lua: A firsthand perspective
Story of a luau-goer and her immersion in Hawaiian culture through art on campus
Lisa Sutter / Mast reporter
May 6, 2005
The eighth annual Na Hoa Aloha ‘o Hawaii club luau took place April 30 in Olson Gymnasium.
The lights were dimmed and the country store sold leis and chocolate covered macadamia nuts. Children in Hawaiian-print shirts ran around the tables covered with sketches of sea turtles amongst a whole crew of families in from Hawaii, just for this event.
The relaxed and easy vibe of Hawaii crept through the unopened bleachers. The theme of this year’s luau, hosted by the Hawaii Club, was “Naue Ke Au,” which means time moves gracefully in Hawaiian.
An opening prayer kicked off the evening, and then the band Kamana’olana accompanied the dinner buffet. This PLU student band is made up of Troy Andrade, Jessica Waia’u, Selena La’a, Waihea Perreira, as well as an unnamed special guest.
The band’s engaging harmonies and mellow sense of humor kept the diners entertained as they feasted upon the kalua pig, teriyaki chicken, rice and macaroni salad. There was Hawaiian punch to wash it all down with.
