Dance has been the essence of the Kalani experience from ancient times to the present. The Kalani 120 acre property is a traditional ahupua'a, or land portion that supplied the resources of the sea as well as the uplands. An 'ohana or extended family cared for the land and benefited from the stewardship. A halau, or Hawaiian cultural school, graced the ocean frontage of Kalani until 1900. This site, with its paths, lava walls and smooth stone floor, is preserved along with a heiau (temple) site and burial grounds. In the 1860s beloved monarch, Kalakaua, reinstated the practice of hula after years of suppression due to the missionaries. A renaissance of Hawaiian culture has continued ever since, celebrated annually in Hilo's Merrie Monarch Festival and simultaneous with Kalani's Hula Heritage Week. Kalakaua stated "Hula is the language of the heart, therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian People." "Kalani is my spirit home" says Cleo Parker Robinson, contemporary American dance leader.

'Uli'uli : Feather gourd rattles
The 'uli'uli is a small gourd (la'amia) containing seeds (ali'ipoe) and fitted with a handle which ends in a flat circular top fringe of cock feathers. The dancer traditionally holds one 'uli'uli in the right hand and shakes it to produce the rattling sound. The left hand is free to carry out the graceful interpretive motions of the hula. But in modern times, dancers use one one 'uli'uli in each hand. Priced per Pair.

The pu'ili is a split bamboo rattle (pu - to sound, 'ili - bark or skin). A piece of bamboo some 20 inches long and one and one-half to two inches in diameter is split into narrow strips or strands except for a section of about five inches at one end which serves as a handle. Bamboo is cut away to leave spaces between the strands. The player or dancer produces a rustling sound when he or she taps the pu'ili against his, or his partner's shoulder or arm, the floor mat, or another pu'ili.

The Hawai‘i Star Ball is now entering its 14th successful year. Each year has gotten more exciting and this year will be no exception. We will be opening the entire Ballroom on the 2nd floor of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. This means an area of over 20,000 square feet instead of our usual 13,000 square feet. Those of you who participated at the 2004 Hawai‘i Star Ball will remember the larger ballroom we had for our Saturday evening Grand Mahalo Ball. This year we will have that same space for all our events over the 3 days and it will be decorated in the spirit of Aloha! We are also excited about our two professional shows this year. On Thursday evening Victor Fung and Anna Mikhed will be giving a demonstration of their award winning Ballroom dances. On Friday Evening

Bob McKeand of Honolulu We got up at the crack of dawn to get to the San Fransico airport three hours before our 9:10 AM flight. After our curb side check in and my short detention by Security (too much silver jewelry and an electric tooth brush!) we arrived at our gate for the usual "hurry up and wait " cycle that is so much a part of flying at this time in human history. After an extremely smooth flight, we arrived in Honolulu at a little after 10:00 AM Hawaiian time. Shadia After arriving at our hotel, we had time to get organized and relax. We met with Shadia around 2:00PM to plan our evening which would revolve around a visit to a restaurant called The Pyramid Cafe Melia would be performing. The Pyramid Cafe is a delightfully decorated restaurant in Honolulu not too far from Waikiki. The customers were numerous for a Tuesday evening. We were greeted at the door by a very friendly hostess and sat at a table where we could easily view the performance.

A Note on Orthography Check for Rebroadcasts Letter from the Filmmakers About the Filmmakers ... Production Journal Hector in California asks: Do you envision this project as serving as a vehicle to bridge the gap between indigenous Hawaiians, and their preconceived notions of the halaus on the Mainland, and the Mainland Hawaiians? Lisette Marie Flanary: I envision this project as a reflection of the pride felt by all Hawaiians, whether they live on the islands or the mainland. As communities away from the islands have continued to grow in strength and in number, I also believe that the "gap" has become less of a divide and more of a bridge that connects people through their heritage, not their location. This documentary will hopefully create more of a dialogue between communities and offer a better understanding of the mainland Hawaiian community through telling their unique stories. It is my hope that this film will open doors to new and different points of view that will help dispel preconceived notions as well as shatter stereotypes to inspire mutual respect in all of us. Talia in South Carolina asks: Since hula is a dance that is so deeply entrenched in Hawaiian history and the identity of Hawaiian people, how are outsiders (those not of Hawaiian roots) received when they attempt to learn hula? Culturally, is hula something Hawaiians share with others simply through performance, or is there a sense of eagerness to teach the dance, the language to those of other native roots?

A Palette of Choices By Lynn Cook

Celebrating the arts in Hawaii is as much a part of an island day as sunrise and sunset. Much more than a carved tiki or a kitschy painting of palm trees, the arts are the heartbeat of the Islands.
The Hawaii Arts Season, February through May, is jam-packed with arts of every persuasion. Ancient hula to modern dance, opera to slack-key guitar, fine arts and fine crafts serve up a feast fit for the most discriminating connoisseur. Begin with hula. No other state has its own language, music and dance. Hawaii is the place to see hula that goes back a thousand years or hula woven into a production by the most modern dance troupe. The stage at the Hawaii Theatre in downtown Honolulu, is magically transformed, becoming a Polynesian time machine.
Featherwork, woven mats and wood carvings are exhibited in fine art galleries and Hawaiian cultural museums. Painters, printmakers and film makers capture the beauty of a Hawaiian day in total realism or total abstract. Museums with state-of-the-art, climate controlled galleries offer a welcome respite from the usual vacation frenzy.
