Hawaiian Music and Dance Festival
At International House this Friday, three of the finest Hawaiian slack key guitarists will participate in a grand event titled Aloha! The Hawaiian Music and Dance Festival. The patriarch of the players, spiritually, is 70-year-old Raymond Kane. Say that KAH-neh, which you might already know if you are a fan of local filmmaker Robert Mugge's work. Kane was so large a part of Hawaiian Rainbow that his portion of the soundtrack was used to make an entire LP. If you saw the film, or maybe got to the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife the year that Hawaii was the focus, you'll recall Kane as a jovial gent, full of good fun and high spirits. From a recent phone conversation, it's obvious that none of that has changed. In the movie, Kane offered the easiest explanation of the slack key guitar's name and evolution. In the 1800s, the cowboys came to Hawaii with guitars. The Hawaiians liked them, but also liked the challenge of different tunings. Kane explained that everybody starts off with the Taro Patch tuning: DGDGBD. He says he always returns to that one, since it is the "master tuning."

TAP home Program Notes In the popular imagination , the hula conjures up images of tropical breezes, swaying palms, the mellow sounds of the ukulele and, inevitably, sensuous girls in grass skirts with gyrating hips. To native Hawaiians, the hula is more than a tourist attraction. As the national dance, it is closely bound to cultural heritage and identity; changes in hula styles and costumes over the past 200 years mirror the historical and political changes the Islands have undergone, from the pre-European contact period and the arrival of missionaries in 1820, to statehood in 1959 and the Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance of the 1970s. In the beginning, according to Hawaiian mythology, the goddess Hi'iaka danced for her older sister, the volcano goddess Pele, and thus the first hula was born. Local legends stress the importance of Moloka’i as the birthplace of the hula and the home of Laka, the woman who first carried hula traditions from Moloka’i to the other Hawaiian islands.

Unwritten Literature of Hawaii
The Sacred Songs of the Hula
by Nathaniel B. Emerson
Emerson's classic study of the Hula is a gold-mine of information for explorers of Hawaiian language, music, dance and culture. He gives the full annotated Hawaiian text of the songs, along with a free English translation. As in many other traditional cultures, Hawaiian art, dance, music and poetry were highly integrated into every aspect of life, to a degree far beyond that of industrial society. The poetry at the core of the Hula is extremely sophisticated. Typically a Hula song has several dimensions: mythological aspects, cultural implications, an ecological setting, and in many cases, (although Emerson is reluctant to acknowledge this) frank erotic imagery. The extensive footnotes and background information allow us an unprecedented look into these deeper layers. While Emerson's translations are not great poetry, they do serve as a literal English guide to the amazing Hawaiian lyrics. While Emerson does not describe the Hula dance per se as much as one would like, he does provide very detailed background information on the cultural setting in which the Hula was performed, including ritual procedures of the Hula schools, or Heiaus. One other weak point is that the illustrations are primarily sketches of plants mentioned in the songs, musical instruments and so on; only two of them portray Hula dancers (one of which is fully clothed!). The book notably includes musical transcriptions of a number of songs, including the Hawaiian anthem

From Poi to Pop: Vocalist Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom has revived the female falsetto style of traditional Hawaiian singing. Making Waves Mele Hula unites three new-school Hawaiian music masters By Todd Inoue IN A CONVERSATION with anyone from Hawai'i, the topic of music and food eventually crops up. Both Hawaiian music and food are revered if acquired tastes. And ironically, it sometimes takes leaving the islands to appreciate them fully. There's no better place to witness the synthesis than at a mainland Hawaiian music concert. Folks who passed on the shows when living in Makakilo will tap it into their PalmPilot. They want to replace the sounds of traffic and car alarms with clean plucking and sky-high melodies. They'll forego Krispy Kremes for two fingers dripping with poi. The uptight workaday uniform of khakis and button-down shirts will blossom into aloha shirts, the business brogue hanging loose like a pair of wet baggies. It's a feeling best described as ohana , family. And Hawaiian acts like Mele Hula welcome the ex-pats with open arms.

"Make sure to get a big bowlful," our host taunted as we set off for the buffet, knowing most of us would pass. "You eat a little bit of fish," he said, "then a little bit of poi, then a little bit of pig, then a little bit of poi . . ." As we obediently ate our big bowlfuls, we saw that this famously bland, grayish purple goop is to the Hawaiian what le pain is to the French: the perfect pause between strong flavors and odd textures. The slightly tangy paste allowed us to make our way back and forth from macadamia-crusted mahimahi to smoky pork, from sweet potatoes to salmon ceviche. We hadn't come to the Royal to discover poi, per se, but we had come on a mission. I grew up in the islands and wanted to show my sweetie how Hawaiians chow down and party. Luaus are the way locals celebrate birthdays, launch campaigns, and raise money. At a Hawaiian hoedown, food and drink abound, uncles pluck guitars, aunties sing along, and anyone might dance the hula. Pass the poi Feast at Lele
