Welcome, this is the home page of Halau Hula O Ke'ala Laua'e. Feel free to browse our website and visit us anytime.
Our Mission
Since 1991 the Federal Census Bureau has reported that there are more people of native-hawaiian ancestry residing in the Southern California & Nevada, than anywhere else in the world, including the State of Hawaii and the numbers are increasing. It is the mission of this halau to provide those who are interested with an education in the history, sociology, language, song and dance of the native inhabitants of the hawaiian island group located in the Polynesian triangle of South Pacific. To share the concepts of "Aloha and Lokahi" in a fun and wholesome, traditionally-hawaiian atmosphere. We emphasize in reaching out to those displaced Kanaka-ma'ole in the mainland, with the hope of instilling in them the desire to return home and reclaim their heritage and homelands.
Biography
Halau Hula o Ke’ala Laua’e first opened its doors in 1989 and was founded by Douglas and Kuuipo Grube (a husband and wife team).

Hula is a wonderful form of dance for all ages and gender. These classes ares open to teens and adults: male and female and will be held monthly in Manhatten beginning in September. There are two basic classifications of hula: auwana and kahiko. Auwana is the modern form of hula and Kahiko is the ancient or old form. This class will focus on Hula Kahiko through footwork, hand motions, mythology, history, plants, instruments and Hawaiian values. June Kaililani Tanoue is a Kumu Hula, a master teacher of the Hula. She studied with Kumu Hula Michael Pang as part of Halau Hula Ka No'eau on the Big Island of Hawaii. She also studied la'au lapa'au, Hawaiian spiritual healing with herbs, with Henry Auwae. Kaililani teaches hula in Chicago where she now resides with her husband, Sensei Robert Joshin Althouse at the Zen Community of Oak Park.

A B C ... XYZ Out in the Hawaiian Islands, the Hula is recognized as an expression of life and love, of the stars and seasons, it is a dance of worship. It was danced to the Shark Goddess and the gods of Wind and Fire as well as the chieftains. This ancient ritual is only danced by the young. The thump of the drum, the rattle of the gourd and the sound of the surf in the distance, the light of the Kukui torches all add to the flavor of this dance.
This dance tradition includes the hand extended at shoulder height, the head bowed, one bare foot placed at a right angle to the others instep. The "Lehua" flowers adorn the hair, while the "leis" ( flowers strung together ) hang around the shoulders. From the waist hang " Ti leaves ", partly revealing the hips, legs and knees. They sing to the music as they sway to the rhythm. Often times the hula is called Hawaiian dancing. This dance is a story told with the hands as well as the body. The Hawaiians invented ( some say Portuguese ) the Ukulele from the Portuguese guitar in 1879 with the Kings ( Kalakaua ) help, this instrument became a Hawaiian tradition.

The ancient chants and movements passed from one generation to another reflect and evoke diverse aspects of the lush terrain and rich surrounding nature of the islands. They also honor significant deities, leaders and ancestral places that are a vital part of Hawaii's history. The text of the songs often have an additional layered meaning, which is believed to be a code of conduct to guide generations to understand cultural etiquette. Halau `o Keikiali'i, formerly Halau Aloha Pumehana `o Polynesia, was formed in San Francisco in 1994. Led by kumu hula (hula master), Kawika Alfiche, the school has over 80 members ranging in age from 5 to 75. They are the first Hawaiian company in the United States to own the land and studio in which they study and practice. Here, the community grows indigenous plants both for food and to use in costume making. To fulfill their mission of preserving and perpetuating traditional Hawaiian culture, dance students also learn Hawaiian language, chants and even how to make natural dyes, leis and other implements used in the dance.

The element of fire has existed as a part of tribal dancing for ages but the firedancing done these days is largely influenced by the following traditions...
Maori Poi
New Zealand's Maori people and their traditions are one of the main foundations of modern firedancing. Maori poi balls are percussive and dance instruments that are used in a variety of ways, including storytelling and exercise. Poi use increases flexibility and strength of wrists, hands, and arms , as well as helping to develop coordination A Maori poi routine is quite rhythmic in nature. The various Maori tribes have their own customs regarding poi, though there are many similiarities in the history of maori poi uses. Hula Dancing
The hula is a famous Hawaiian dance. People dance it at luaus and other festivals. Hawaiian dancing is fun. It tells a story with motions.
Hula means "dance" in Hawaiian language. It can be traced back to Polynesia and India. The hula has an interesting myth on how it was started.
Long ago Pele, the goddess of fire, told her little sister, Laka, to amuse her because she was very bored. Right away, Laka got up and moved gracefully, acting out silently events they both knew. Pele was delighted when Laka began relating victories of King Kamehameha. She showed winds circling, directed by the goddess Laama'oma'o. She described trees, flowers, waterfalls, and stars. She honored Kuula, the god of the sea, by swaying side to side to the rhythm of the ocean waves. Pele clapped. She was fascinated. The hula was born. Laka became the hula goddess. At first there were some rules.
Only religious men and women could perform the first hulas because Hawaiian dancing was sacred. These men and women devoted themselves to Laka's hula. They only saw their instructors.
The hula began to change. Many years later, common people danced the hula. Their dances were happy and gay. Everyone danced, no matter how old they were. The hula still continued to change.

The hula of Old Hawaii, known as kahiko kapa (tree-bark cloth), ti-leaf skirts and ferns or vines woven into lei for the neck and head, wrists and ankles.
In ancient times, dancers were selected in childhood, or even before birth, for hula training. They spent their formative years separated from the outside world, under the care of a kumu hula , or hula master, and their lives were dedicated to the goddess Laka, patron of the hula. Chants and dance preserved the history of births, deaths, loves and battles. Hula was danced for religious purposes, as well as entertainment, in the hope of successful crops or battles, at funerals or to celebrate human fertility.

After Kalakaua died, and his sister Liliuokalani lost her throne, hula began a long decline into the 20th century. When Hawaiian music became a fad in the early 1900s, people who had never been to Hawaii wrote songs and danced on Mainland stages. The sacred dance was tarnished by a hootchie-koochie image.

from The Kiai Echo - Spring 1996
U pon first hearing that Professor Okazaki incorporated Hawaiian Lua into his system, I have been trying to find out where the lua was hidden, which techniques were of Hawaiian origin, and why these lua techniques were kept so secret. No one seemed to know where the lua was among the hundreds of techniques contained within the system Professor Okazaki called Danzan Ryu . For more than thirty years, I sought answers to these questions by searching libraries across the country and within various Hawaiian island communities. It seemed as though Hawaii, itself, had lost the mysterious art of lua , or possibly that someone or group had painstakingly combed through the public archives and removed all traces of this ancient art. After personally interviewing several of Okazaki's former students, talking to many older generation Hawaiians, and following several leads, I was able to make contact with a lua group in the summer of 1995. A time and place was set, and I prepared to meet with these warriors who practice the ancient way of bone breaking. Acutely aware of my own limitations, I was somewhat apprehensive about our first meeting. In retrospect, my friends had voiced a sense of fear based on stories they had heard about lua . As I followed the 'olohe-lua (instructor) to a private location at the base of a rugged mountain range, foremost in my mind were stories told to me by the old Hawaiians. One tale described of how the
