Music of Hawaii: Dance, Instruments, and Songs
Long ago, the Hawaiian storytelling dance form known as hula was an important vehicle for the oral history and religion of the Polynesian people of Hawaii. After almost disappearing during the mid-1800s (because of outside influences), hula dancing is once again an integral part of the culture of the Hawaiian people who celebrate their island ancestry.
Many hula dances involve movement set to chanted or sung poetry with instruments. The whole body is used in the dance, but the arm and hand movements tell the story. Hula dances often feature some kind of musical instrument or a combination of instruments. Some dances are performed without instruments; in this case the dancers might use their hands as percussion instruments.
Native Hawaiian instruments are generally constructed from natural materials found in the island environment, such as seashells, bamboo, logs, gourds, coconut shells, animal skins and teeth, and rocks. The following lists some Hawaiian instruments:
The conch shell is a large seashell played like a ceremonial fanfare trumpet. When blown strongly, it can be heard for miles.

MOLOKAI KA HULA PIKO: CELEBRATING THE BIRTH OF THE HULA
Author: AFH
The island of Molokai truly lives up to its billing as "Hawaiian by Nature." The fifth largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, Molokai is immersed in natural beauty. What’s more, nearly 40 percent of the island’s 7,400 residents are Hawaiian by descent.
Molokai is Hawaiian in another special way: It is widely held to be the birthplace of hula. The legend has it that Laka, the goddess of the hula, journeyed from island to island, sharing the dance with all who wished to learn. Each of her graceful movements was layered with spiritual meaning, bringing to life the history, traditions and genealogy of the Hawaiian people.
Laka gave birth to the Hawaiian dance at a sacred hill in Kaana. It was on this hill, Puu Nana, that the ancient Hawaiians learned hula of every kind. It is said that the remains of Laka herself are secretly hidden somewhere beneath the hill.
Each May, Papohaku Beach Park in Kaluakoi (on the western tip of the island) serves as the setting for the Moloka‘i Ka Hula Piko, or "Molokai, the Center of the Dance." This popular cultural

HULA. The dance known as hula was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by their original Polynesian settlers, who migrated there by outrigger canoes from southeastern Pacific islands beginning in the fifth century CE. Two-way voyaging continued for several centuries, during which seafarers brought domesticated animals, plant seeds and cuttings, and all the various cultural necessities for life on uninhabited islands. Other ethnic groups have come to Hawaii since the first European contact in 1778: Western (mainly British, American, and Portuguese) and Asian (mainly Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino) settlers have contributed to Hawaii's present multicultural dance culture. The hula, however, has remained largely uninfluenced by other dance traditions. The origins of hula are shrouded in legend. One story describes the adventures of Hi'iaka, who danced to appease her fiery sibling, the volcano goddess Pele. The Hi'iaka epic provides the basis for many present-day dances. In the pre-European period, hula was closely related to religious practices. Extant dances accompanied by the

The choreography of hula
melds hands, feet, hips
an entire body in motion
By Catherine Kekoa Enomoto
Star-Bulletin WHILE you're keeping your eyes on the hands, Aunty Mae Loebenstein is focusing on the feet. "I'm a feet person," said the kumu hula, whose Ka Pa Hula O Kauanoe O Wa'ahila performs at the 34th annual Merrie Monarch Festival hula competition this weekend. "You dance with your feet. You don't dance with your hands really. It's your feet that take you around, not your hands." Hula choreography is about more than hands. It can embrace feet as well as lyrical body motions reflecting nature, and dynamic change in the pursuit of perfection. "When you put your feet down strong, you control your body for the hula," said the 85-year-old doyenne who's been crafting dances for more than six decades. "But if you're on your toes, you're kinda little wobbly, yeah." She teaches dancers to plant both feet flat and sway into their steps. She emphasizes a natural, controlled hip movement, as if dancers are floating across the stage. The feet don't skid, they don't tap, they don't jerk. The torso is pa'a (not bobbing) and hand movements are very subtle.
