Greek music and the Greek Gods
The musical culture of ancient Greece is known more through literary references than through preserved musical documents. About 20 fragments of music are extant written in a relatively late Greek notational system, but references to music performed at various rites and social occasions abound in the works of ancient Greek authors. Consequently, most modern discussions of Greek music either speculate about the sound of the music itself, or deal with the role and nature of music in that society. Dance, poetry, rite, and music seem inseparably associated in the early history of music in ancient Greece. Homer's Iliad and Odyssey report vintners' songs, dirges, and hymns of praise to Apollo (paeans). Music was described as an art exerting great power (ethos) over human beings, and certain musical styles came to be associated with particular peoples and deities. The KITHARA, a plucked string instrument, came to be linked with Apollo , the god of the Sun and reason, while the aulos, a loud double-reed instrument, came to be identified with

Brother to Artemus and 1/2 brother to Terpischore , son of Leto and Zeus. In a passage of Pindar, Apollo is called the dancer; ( and there is a Greek line extant which represents Jupiter himself in the very act of dancing ). The Gymnopedite was instituted by Lycurgus, and was invented ( Lacedemon ) by the Spartans as an early excitation to the courage of their children, and in order to lead them on insensibly to the exercise of an armed dance Pyrrhic ). The choir of the children regulated their motions by those of the men, and all danced at the same time, singing hymns in praise of Apollo . The festival was sacred to Apollo for the poetry, and to Bacchus for the

84. GREEK RITUAL DANCE
Modern greek dance retains a link to its Pagan origins. Ultimately though my advice to Pagans interested in greek dance is learn to dance.
http://www.speakeasy.net/~bwilliam/greekdance.html
GREEK RITUAL DANCE Ancient Pagans dance across Classical vases holding graceful folds of robes in their hands, frozen by the artist in a moment of bending and leaping and twirling. How inspiring they are! Many a modern looks to the vases and says, "I will reconstruct these dances!" The most famous of these, of course, was Isadora Duncan, whose simple dances in homemade togas entranced Europe in her lifetime. Modern Pagans long to recover the ancient Pagan functions of the dance. Greeks, of course, never ceased to dance, even while converting to Christianity. Some of the ancient meanings of the dance remain-certain dances are performed during the spring with clear fertility symbology. The social implications have changed little. Dance provides a meeting place for men and women, an emotional expression of community spirit, a form of cultural bonding that identifies this person as a member of this village, this country. But modern Greeks no longer dance in honor of the Gods and Goddesses, and modern Pagans long to do so. How might we go about this? In one sense, reconstruction is impossible. Ultimately, lacking actual videotape of eighth-century dances, it's impossible to say with certainty that we are performing an eighth century dance.

What about using Turkish music?
This can be tricky...it's possible to offend someone.
Response 1
"First of all, don't think because the Greeks and Turks seem to always be at odds politically, that they find each others' music offensive. I've found, and please, this is only my observation, that Greeks and Turks have cross-polinated so much that they either claim or simply just like the same music. "For example, there is a new, nice CD out now called "Greatest Turkish Belly Dance Hits", or something similar wich I think will be easy for you to find. If has a picture of a very thin dancer in a pink costume with a scarf on her head... Here's the sticky pointthis CD has a number of songs on it that I've heard played by Greek bands for Greek line dancing. A lot of great Turkish music comes from the city of Izmir, which, until about 1923, was largely inhabited by Greeks, who called the city Smyrna. When the Turks expelled their ethnic Greeks in 1923 (and the Greeks expelled their ethnic Turks at the same time), these Greeks took their music with them. The Greeks from Smyrna moved to Athens and Piraeus, where they developed an incredible honky-tonk type of music called Rembetika. (There are a number of Rembetika CDs that are available in chain music stores, but I'd hesitate to use them in a belly dance routine.)

The dance tradition of Greece was disseminated to Europe where it became accentuated with elements of theatre and ballet. The Greek dance is combined with unique forms of cultural expression, music and poetry, each claiming its unique identity and significance in the ensemble of an integrated dance performance. The style of Greek dance is reminiscent of the rules of European dance (in terms of steps and dance tempi). However the morphic characteristics of the Greek dance are presented in a kaleidoscope of expression. The expressive efficiency and plasticity of the human body are dominant, particularly in the movements of the upper body. The torso, hands and wrist are instrumental in the reenactment of dramatic, tragic and lyric motifs. The face mirrors emotions that are in tune with music and rhythm. Ancient Greece drove a sharp distinction between the Apollonian dance and the Dionysiac dance. The former – the
