    Greek Dancing
This section deals with traditional Greek dancing. If you're looking for dancing in clubs and the culture that surrounds the nightclub scene in Greece, head on over to the Magical Journey guide to Greek nightlife. for the history of traditional Greek dance, click here The music of Greece falls into two main categories: folk (or regional music) and popular music. Ready to dance? Learn the steps here! The folk music is divided into the mainland music and the music of the islands. Popular music is often referred to as "Bouzouki" music, emerging from the seaport tavernas and spreading quickly to all parts of Greece. (The Bouzouki is the guitar/mandolin type instrument you'll find in any Greek band). With the rhythm of song must go the movement of dance. Most commonly, the men of Greece perform the intricate steps and movements of a slow moving, turning, twisting Zeibekikos , which is a stately war dance originally performed with a sword and shield. The dancers circle around each other fighting a fanciful battle as the music unfolds.

Dancer with krotala , flute case, and walking stick, Attic red figure kylix, ca. 480 BC Dance or in Greek Choros The mythical (choros), built by Daidalus for Ariadne (Iliad, 18.590), still remains a mysterious and ambiguous term for concerned scholars. It either signified the choral dance or the magical space where the dance was performed: namely the dancing floor. The ancient scholars interpreted choros as a place (topos), complete with columns and statues arranged in a circle. Recently discovered circular structures at Knossos were somehow related to Daidalic choros In earlier texts, choros denoted dance without the indication of a dancing floor. The dance existed in itself and stayed as a temporal phenomenon. The meaning of the word is still on enigmatic grounds and its importance lies in this ambiguity, Archaic Age and the Metamorphoses of Greek Culture Dance is mentioned in the Homeric poems: the suitors of Penelope delight themselves with music and dancing.

From the Metropolitan Museum of Art The attire worn by all performers of the mantle dance is similar: an ample cloak, enwrapping the body and on some occasions drawn closely over the head, or covering the lower part of the face as well, leaving only the eyes unveiled. This mantle, which is often depicted as extremely thin and transparent, and worn over a long full chiton, becomes the most expressive component of the composition, both concealing and revealing the bodily shape and identity of the dancer. Funeral dance, from a Greek Fresco (Apulia) tomb 5 th century BC A interesting and funny description by J. B. Calvert of a story by Herodotus of Cleisthenes, a tyrant of Sicyon in 575 BC, who wanted his daughter Agarista to marry. A large party started with many young rich men from prominent Athenian families who wanted to be considered to marry Agarista. Hippocleides, one of these young men, showed off his talents, which included dancing to the flute. He danced on a table, which was rather showy anyway, but he was finally so indelicate as to dance with his head on the table and his legs gyrating in the air. Cleisthenes rejected Hippocleides to marry his daughter, with the comment that he had "danced" away his bride. Hippocleides replied with "
