41. Greek Dancing Through The Centuries, The History And Evolution Of Greek Dance
The history of greek dance and its links to antiquity.
http://www.annaswebart.com/culture/dancehistory/history/
Antiquity / Origin of Dance
Ancient Greeks believed that dancing was invented by the Gods and therefore they had associated it with their religious and worshipping ceremonies. They believed that the Gods offered this gift to some select mortals only, who in turn taught dancing to their fellow-men. Greek mythology attributes the origin of dancing to Rea who taught this art to Kourites in Crete. Kronos had dethroned his father Uranus. Since he was afraid that he might also be dethroned by his own children, he was eating them as soon as they were born. His wife Rea, however, deceived Kronos when their last child Zeus was born. She hid Zeus in a dark cave in Crete and instead, she gave a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes to Kronos to eat. She also asked Kourites, who were armed half-gods, to dance a war dance around the cave, shouting and striking their shields with their swords, so that Kronos would not hear baby Zeus crying. When later Zeus dethroned his father, Kourites became the priests in the new world. Their decedents continued these war dances as part of their religious ceremonies. The oldest Greek historical sources come from Crete where an ancient civilization, the Minoan civilization, flourished around 3000 - 1400 BC. The inhabitants of Crete cultivated music, song and dance, as part of their religious life and for their entertainment, as well. Sometime during the fifteenth century BC, Crete was overrun by invaders from mainland Greece, and eventually it was controlled by Mycenae.

Men of the Village Dancers perform the choreographed Hassapiko , called Delphi , at an international festival in Seaside in 1992. From left: Harry Ogden, Chuck Chernoff, Roger Wetmore, Darold Skerritt. Below you will find information on some of the dances we dance! Click on the Tsarouxi to find you how to dance each dance! Click on the camera to see a picture of each dance! Dance "How-To" introductory materials. Chiotiko Chiotiko is a simple folk dance from an island in the northeastern Aegean Sea named Chios (sometimes spelled Khios or Hios in English) Delphi Delphi is a slow Hassapiko dance that our teacher, the late Maxine Myer, learned at Delphi, where the Oracle was located and the spot that the ancient Greeks considered the center of the universe. It is danced to Natane to 21 (It was 1821, the year of the Greek Revolutionary War). E Trata This dance originated in eastern Megara, on mainland Greece west of Athens. We refer to this as the "fishing net" dance. The steps alternate between "pulling in the nets" and "weaving the nets." Anna Efstathiou of Oakland taught this to us in 1983. Haniotiko This is a Cretan syrto from the town of Hania (Chania), in western Crete. Anna Efstathiou taught us this dance at her seminar in October 1983.

Kypseli Teaching Staff Louise Bilman , a trained musician and former professional accompanist, has pursued studies in Greek music since 1960. She taught the dance portion of UCLA's first course in Greek music, given by Dr. Sotirios Chianis in 1966, and together they set up the first formal course of dance instruction in a Southern California Greek Orthodox church, which was courageously pioneered by St. Katherine Church of Redondo Beach. Louise (Anderson) Bilman taught an academic course on Greek Dance, "Greek Dance in its Cultural Context," at UCLA from 1968 to 1975. She traveled extensively on a series of study tours to Greece, initially with Dr. Chianis and his family on an ethnomusicology course, and subsequently each year independently. Her area of interest has taken her for extended visits to Samothrace, Northwest Epirus, Western Crete, and the Thracian borders areas. Since 1976, she has focused her research in Kalymnos and the central Dodecanese Islands. Because her study is not only the forms of dance but also its social utilization as a representation of community values, she is interested in the "raw material" the dances and songs of shepherds and sponge fishermen of small villages rather than the performance groups, as a vehicle to perpetuate traditional values. She has presented seminars on this topic at the ITHACA Cultural Study Program in Crete, under the direction of Dr. Nikos Germanacos. She has served as a judge in the Greek Orthodox Youth Folk Dance Festival since 1985.

The first edition of the Greek Folk Dance Resource Manual was first written in 1991 in an attempt by the author, Charlie Kyriacou ( Charlie's Photobiography - 34 photos, takes a few minutes to download ), to share information with Greek folk dance directors and enthusiasts concerning Greek folk dance, music, folklore and costumes. Since information and people's address and phone numbers change quickly, the manual is continually updated. The ninth edition was completed in October 2000. This web page also presents price lists from different Greek folklore organizations, articles written by the manual author and other educational aids relevant to the understanding of Greek folk dance. Charlie works for NASA at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL) and was the Parts Program Manager for the Mars Rovers and the Task Manager of the Receiver/Transmitter Unit for the Cassini Spacecraft that arrived at Saturn in June. Charlie was recently appointed the Parts Program Manager for the multi-billion dollar Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter , NASA's biggest space project in its history.

Introduction Greece is one of the few countries in the world where the folk dances are as alive today as they were in ancient times. Dance has always played an important role in the life of a Greek. It is an expression of human feelings and everyday life. The Greeks danced at religious festivals, ceremonies; they danced to ensure fertility; they danced to prepare for war and to celebrate victories; they danced at weddings; they danced to overcome depression and to cure physical illness. Almost every dance has a story to tell. Dance was regarded as one of the highest forms of art. Plato agreed with his mentor Socrates that every educated man should know how to dance gracefully by which he meant the manly exercises that kept the body strong and supple and ready to do its duty on the battlefield. The Pyrrhic, or weapon dance (a form of mock combat) taken from Crete and perfected in Sparta, was the ideal. The dance, of all the arts, is the one that most influences the soul. Dancing is divine in its nature and is the gift of the gods. Plato
