Dance and the City: My Big Fat Greek Festival
    Rachel Levin
September 12, 2004 For a single girl looking for dance and romance, Greek culture may have it all. Perhaps because of the legacy of Zeus and the Olympics, Greek men have inherited a reputation for being earthly gods and athletic Adonises. To add to the mystique, they are known to dance fervently, locked arm in arm with one another, staggering in a rhythmic circle. Granted, they sometimes smash plates in the process, but that's just more evidence of their passionate nature. When I saw an ad for the annual Los Angeles Greek Fest, the promise of dancing Greek Adonises was enough to lure me for a Saturday night of Zorba demonstrations and spanakopita. Opa! The temperature in L.A. reached upward of 90 degrees and humid on Saturday, so I was delighted to get out off my stuffy apartment into the balmy night air. My friends and I arrived at sunset, and the city looked beautiful. The Greek Orthodox Church, St. Sophia, was lit up, and her green domes were set against a sky of pink clouds. The blue and white awnings and tiny white lights of the festival reminded me of my visit to the whitewashed villages of the Greek island of Santorini.

    Traditional Dance in Greek Culture
    by Yvonne Hunt
The book examines dance in its cultural setting as a vital, living element; a segment of Hellenic culture which is largely neglected in the broader context. The specific focus of the book is on the role dance plays in the lives of the Greeks, the changes brought about by an ever-evolving society and its future position in Greek culture. Dance genres and styles are presented by geographical regions, i.e., Dodekanisa, Kyklades, Kriti, Roumeli, Makedonia, etc. In addition, various customs in which dance plays a central or important roleapokreas, celebrations, anastenaria, Lazarines, tzamalaare also discussed. An entire chapter is devoted to improvisation and leading the dance as well as a chapter on the naming of the dances. The latter seeks to clarify a subject which can mystify both Greek and non-Greek alike. As it is difficult to separate dance from music another chapter examines the music, musicians and traditional instruments. A catalogue of traditional instruments as well as combinations used in various regional ensembles is included. In his foreward to the book the noted ethnomusicologist, Markos Dragoumis, director of the Music Folklore Archives of the Centre for Asia Minor Studies in Athens (publisher of the book), writes "The presentation of the material shows a good balance between practical and theoretical information and the reading is enjoyable." It "...whets the appetite of the novice to take the first step towards becoming a dancer and allows the knowledgeable to acquire a deeper understanding of the subtle art of Greek dancing." Through this book both Greeks and non-Greeks will increase their awareness of this profound expression of Hellenic culture. Hopefully they will also recognize the urgency of preservation and documentation before it disappears entirely or is swallowed up in rapidly-encroaching foreign elements.

Introduction Greece is one of the few countries in the world where the folk dances are as alive today as they were in ancient times. Dance has always played an important role in the life of a Greek. It is an expression of human feelings and everyday life. The Greeks danced at religious festivals, ceremonies; they danced to ensure fertility; they danced to prepare for war and to celebrate victories; they danced at weddings; they danced to overcome depression and to cure physical illness. Almost every dance has a story to tell. Dance was regarded as one of the highest forms of art. Plato agreed with his mentor Socrates that every educated man should know how to dance gracefully by which he meant the manly exercises that kept the body strong and supple and ready to do its duty on the battlefield. The Pyrrhic, or weapon dance (a form of mock combat) taken from Crete and perfected in Sparta, was the ideal. The dance, of all the arts, is the one that most influences the soul. Dancing is divine in its nature and is the gift of the gods. Plato

Philhellenes Greek Dancers Home Page We are always looking for new dancers. If you are interested in becoming a folk dancer,
or simply want to find out more, please email us on: greekdancing@philhellenes.com
We look forward to hearing from you!
The Philhellenes are a London-based group of Greek and English friends brought together by a love of Greek folk dance. Through our performances we aim to preserve the authenticity and spirit of Greek dances and to make them accessible to a wider audience in London and across the country. Since our formation in 1991 we have danced at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, the Barbican Centre, and the British Museum , at the Truro Eastbourne and Glastonbury international dance festivals, and at numerous charitable events. Our repertoire covers dances from the Greek mainland, the islands, and areas which now form part of Turkey . We perform in traditional costumes, some of them antique, others re-created as close as possible to the originals, and all accessorised with authentic jewellery. One of the aims of our dancers is to work with the children of the Greek community schools to develop their interest in their cultural heritage. In this way, we hope to encourage them to become the next generation of Greek folk dancers.

HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN GERASIMOS ENCYCLICAL To the Reverend Clergy and All the Faithful of the Metropolis of San Francisco: “How lonely sits the city that once was full of people!” Thus begins the Book of Lamentations, the book of mourning over the destruction of Jerusalem. As I have seen images of the devastation in New Orleans and other cities along the gulf coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, I have been reminded of so many passages from the Lamentations. “All her people groan as they search for bread,” the prophet cries; “we must pay for the water we drink” (Lam. 1:11, 5:4) “Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?” (Lam. 1:12). This is the prophet’s question to us. Can we look at these images of destruction, can we hear these terrible descriptions of human tragedy on a massive scale, and turn away without offering help, without rendering service? Are we like the priest and the Levite of our Lord’s parable, who saw the wounded man lying by the side of the road, and passed by? Or are we like the blessed Samaritan, who rendered aid to the one in need, thus proving himself a true neighbor, and not merely a bystander to the sufferings of others?
