1920's Fads and Trends
Mr. Finley U.S History Project Mahjongg
Introduced to the United States in 1922, the Chinese game of mahjongg took hold of Americans within a year with millions of enthusiastic followers. Women of mahjongg clubs wore silk kimonos to play in proper attire while the game became the concrete form of entertainment within fraternity houses and dormitories. By 1923, mahjongg sets were outselling radios, and American entreprenuers quickly jumped on the bandwagon. Chicago meat packers sent bones to China for carving. Sets were sold at prices ranging from a few dollars to $500. American novices paid for rulebooks and Chinese Americans to teach them the ritziest game of the 20's.
Dancing!!
Since the 1920s was a time of celebration, there were many fads. People loved to dance, especially the Charleston, Fox-trot, and the shimmy. Dance marathons were something everyone went to every weekend. Extremely popular during the great depression
New York World stated "Of all the crazy competitions ever invented, the dancing marathon wins by a considerable margin of lunacy."

days hours min. sec. Top 10 fads of the 20th Century nominated These fads received the most votes in a JS Online poll last week. The poll asked people to nominate the top 10 fads of the 20th Century. Not everyone offered 10 items. The top six choices for "fads of the century" are hoola hoops, body piercing, bell bottom pants, pet rocks/disco dancing, Beanie Babies and streaking. Oh what a century we were. Ugh! Miniskirts, leisure suits, lava lamps, flagpole sitting, punk hair and tie-dyed clothes were runner-ups in this unscientific poll. 34 Votes

Testimonials - Wedding Couples
Here is what some of our wedding couples shared with us about their wedding preparation lessons at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio:
Having our wedding dance choreographed helped to make our first dance as husband and wife a moment we - and probably most of our guests - will remember for the rest of our lives. If we had not started taking ballroom dance lessons several months before our wedding, our wedding dance would have been just another high school slow dance. Instead, we astounded friends and family with an elegant Waltz. Even the catering staff stopped to watch and, afterwards asked if we were professional dancers! If they were impressed with us, we can’t imagine what they would have thought if they could have seen the instructors at Fred Astaire. - Kerry and Tucker Evans We absolutely love the instructors and the atmosphere at FADS. They helped us put together such an incredible program for our wedding day. We did it in just 8 weeks. Every one of our wedding guests was thrilled with our dancing. Especially when we made our entrance into the reception with a spectacular Tango.

Student Testimonials
Below are testimonials from the wide range of our students:
Getting married? Read testimonials from wedding couples whom we instructed. I started dancing 6 years ago as a way to relax after a day at work . I soon found out there are many benefits to dancing. One of the benefits was the exercise part of it. I had no ideal of the amount of exercise involved with dance. The other was confidence that I could go out on the dance floor and know what I was doing. Dance has been a very big part of my life and I can’t imagine my life with out it. Dancing at Fred’s is the most energizing, athletic and relaxing time of the week for me. When arriving at the dance studio Monika and the others teachers make me feel right at home. Monika makes learning how to dance rewarding and exciting. The atmosphere here at the studio makes learning how to dance fun and enjoyable . I recommend all of the teachers for anyone learning to dance. - by Ed Matczack I like the fact that it really requires a combination of physical and intellectual effort to improve as a dancer, and become successful in dancesport.

Top 10 fads online? Hold on.
7/21/2005 6:21:55 PM, by Ken "Caesar" Fisher CNet has put together a little Top 10 list featuring the biggest fads to hit online culture (if we can call it that) so far. For a fun exercise, stop reading right now, and see how many you can think of before hitting the list. I could only think of four. You know why? Because the rest of the list flat-out sucks! Weighing in at the #1 spot is the Hampster Dance. Unfortunately, CNet links to a travesty of Hampster Dance exploitation, but you can get a feel for the original 1998 page here (which coincidentally, I linked only yesterday). I agree firmly with this ranking; it stems from before all of the forced attempts at humor, and man, that song is trippy. Other fads making the list that I approve of (in my Communist Party style) are: Mahir, All your Base are Belong to Us, and Star Wars Kid. All Your Base could possibly occupy the top spot, but the dancing ham p sters have a special place in the old school. The rest, like I said, blow chunks. First of all, who gives a hoot about Friendster. There's a reason it amounted to jack! I don't recall it being much of a fad at all. In fact, I think the heat surrounding Orkut was much higher. JibJab's "This land" parody song was just a flash in the pan. Sure, the Guthrie-inspired take on the election was funny, but it's staying power was weak, and the follow-ups all suffered. Will anyone be quoting it in a year? I doubt it, but I KISS YOU is around to stay (we're cursed).
