Heat stress can reduce summer milk production in dairy cows by 15 to 22 percent according to University of Florida research. The cow's natural defenses cause her appetite to be suppressed in times of high heat stress. Less feed intake naturally leads to less milk production. Reproductive efficiency also suffers in times of heat stress, costing dollars for delayed lactation and rebreeding fees. A number of strategies have been used successfully to reduce the heat experienced by cows, and thus increase feed intake and milk production during the summer.
Shade
The first and most basic step is to block solar radiation by providing shade. Trees provide effective shade, but usually die quickly with cows around them due to rubbing and soil disturbance. Trees can also be a dangerous place for cows in a lightning storm. Portable shade cloth can be used. Usually, 2-inch diameter pipes are used for frames and hooks are provided for moving the cloth. Shade cloth is usually 12 feet from the ground with 50 square feet/cow pro-vided. High density (75%+) shade cloth should be used.

http://www.saltinstitute.org/47g.html
Salt and Trace Minerals for Livestock, Poultry and Other Animals SALT FOR DAIRY CATTLE Deficiency Symptoms The sodium and chloride nutrition of lactating dairy cows is critical to optimum production because of the obligatory loss of these nutrients in milk. In addition, dairy cattle are commonly fed high forage diets that are low in sodium and high in potassium. Consequently, a sodium chloride deficiency can develop rapidly in a high producing cow. In this study, cattle placed on the salt-deficient diet had averaged approximately 14,000 pounds of milk the previous year ( Table 5 Recently Cornell researchers (198) have fed dairy cows diets containing 0.10%, 0.27% or 0.45% chloride to look at the effects of a chloride deficiency, independent of sodium. Dry matter intake was significantly reduced after 4 weeks, body weights dropped from an average of 575 kg initially to 476 kg by the eighth week of the trial and milk production decreased from 27.7 to 19.2 kg/day for cows fed 0.10% chloride. Other chloride deficiency signs included lethargy, hypophagia, emaciation, hypogalactia, constipation, cardiovascular depression and mild dehydration. The cows frequently licked urine of other cows, chewed on wooden stall dividers and licked metal pipes. These data show that chloride nutrition can be of critical importance in diets of lactating cows. The actual requirement is probably between 0.18% and 0.27% chloride (199). Salt Feeding Recommendations The 1989 National Research Council publication "Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle" states that "A reasonable estimate of the dietary requirement for milk cows is 0.18% sodium, which is equivalent to 0.46% sodium chloride in the total diet dry matter" (156). This level of salt would provide 0.30% chloride which should be adequate. The 2001 Dairy NRC (286) reported that

Neosporosis in Dairy Cattle Updated: November 2003 What is Neosporosis? Neospora infection has been reported in cattle, sheep, goats, dogs and horses. It is a protozoa and belongs to the same group of micro-organisms as coccidia. Neospora is closely related to Toxoplasma gondii, a protozoan parasite known to cause abortions in goats and sheep. The complete life cycle of N.caninum is only partially known but the suggested probable routes are best appreciated in the diagram on page two. It should be noted that studies have not been conducted on wild members of the dog family (coyotes, foxes, etc), and it seems reasonable to suspect that they are also a definitive host of Neospora. Table of Contents How do animals get Neosporosis? Cattle may become infected from eating feed or drinking water contaminated with the droppings or feces of infected dogs or possibly infected wild members of the dog family. Table of Contents What are the clinical signs of Neosporosisa?

Updated: November, 2003 The bacterium invades the small intestine and slowly multiplies over the course of several months to years. It is eventually excreted in the manure of infected animals, and can contaminate the ground, water and other parts of the environment. Map cannot multiply outside of an animal. It is capable, however, of surviving in soil, manure or water for almost a year because of its resistance to heat, cold and drying. Table of Contents The growth of Map is slow and the animal can look normal for several years after the initial infection. When clinical signs of illness are eventually seen they consist usually of intermittent diarrhea and weight loss that does not respond to treatment despite a normal appetite. This occurs because Map infects the last section of the small intestine (the ileum), causing inflammation that thickens the intestinal wall and prevents proper nutrient absorption. Affected cattle generally do not have a fever. It is easy to misdiagnose, since these animals are now more susceptible to other infectious diseases because of their underlying condition. In cows and heifers, clinical signs tend to surface a few weeks after a stressful event such as calving. In dairy cattle, a mature animal may show clinical signs at almost any age but they typically appear at age five. Many factors will influence when an animal will become clinically sick. For example, the age when the animal was first infected, the amount of bacteria, stress factors and even genetics may play a role in the course of the disease.

Introduction
Milk and milk products are important constituents of the human diet.
High standards of dairy sanitation are required; milking parlors and manure handling procedures are subject to inspection by health officials.
Inspectors equate the presence of flies with unsanitary operations so the need for a high degree of fly control in dairy operations is obvious. Back to the top Anti-Fly Products Integrated fly control means using a two-pronged attack on flies: larvicides to prevent fly larvae developing into adults, and adulticides to kill adult flies. Larvicides Adulticides Economic Impact Flies can pose a serious health hazard to both animals and humans, and have a significant impact on animal productivity. Learn more... Milk and dairy beef sales total $100 million per year from approximately 420 dairy herds with 40,000 head of milk cows. The Extension Service provides research-based information to producers and industry personnel to help them be more competitive in an increasingly competitive market. Environmental regulations and the ability to comply with them is a primary concern of producers. Waste management is emphasized in dairy Extension programs. Since Arkansas and neighboring states normally rank in the bottom few states in the U.S. for production per cow, emphasis is also placed on improving efficiency of production. Forage quality and usage, improved herd management, financial record-keeping (including Dairy Herd Improvement Association records), ration-balancing, and cow comfort, including heat-stress management, are a few subjects addressed by Extension. Sire selection and reproduction are also stressed because the genetic levels of the herd and overall fertility have marked effects on net profit of the herd. The state of the U.S. and international dairy industry may see changes that are even more dramatic in the future. The ongoing reorganization of federal milk marketing orders and shifts in milk production areas within the U.S. make Extension

COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE LIVESTOCK PROGRAMS
The Livestock component of the UVI Cooperative Extension Service is divided into four main project areas. Each area strives to provide the farmers of the Virgin Islands with the most accurate and up to date livestock information available.
Beef Cattle Improvement Program
The beef cattle program of the Cooperative Extension Service focuses on identification and performance testing. It works with all of the cattle farmers in the Virgin Islands from the large purebred Senepol breeder to the small backyard producer. The program operates along the guidelines of the Beef Improvement Federation and assists producers in the identification of animals, weighing of animals and provides selection assistance for replacement animals. The goals of the program are to provide beef cattle farmers with the technology and education necessary for a profitable enterprise. The primary breed of beef cattle in the Virgin Islands is the Senepol . This breed was developed on St. Croix to meet the needs of the tropical beef producer.
The cattle were classified in the 1970's in a cooperative effort between the then College of the Virgin Islands and the original four Senepol farms. The breed has now gone global and can be found on almost every continent. For more information on the Senepol cattle visit the UVI Senepol homepage.

Research field: animals Our livestock research at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) covers a number of topics, including animal welfare and behaviour, nutrition and health, breeding and genetics, pest and disease control, and manure management. Scientists are sensitive to society's concerns about livestock production. The effects of drug treatments on food products, control of bacteria that can compromise food safety, and the impacts of livestock farming on environmental health are valid issues and worthy of scientific study. Livestock research in our labs aims to address these concerns and, at the same time, to provide workers in the livestock sector with innovations to improve production and animal care. The information, technology and programs provided by this research will help to maintain the competitiveness and ensure the renewal of Canada's livestock industry.

Two-pronged approach fights mastitis in dairy cattle
Mastitis is the most common and costly disease in milk production, causing lost yields and treatment costs for dairy farmers. On top of that, the current treatment method of using antibiotics is not always very effective as bacteria become resistant, and consumers are increasingly concerned about the presence of antibiotics in animal products. Scientists at the Dairy and Swine Research and Development Centre in Sherbrooke, Que., are looking for ways to address these issues by developing alternative treatment methods for mastitis. One potential method involves the use of lactoferrin, which is a protein naturally present in milk that has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Another promising alternative under development is a DNA-based vaccine that helps prevent mastitis-causing bacteria from attaching to the cells in the udder. Contact: Dr. Jacques Surprenant
