Henri Rousseau Sleeping Gypsy and de Chirico Mystery and Melancholy of a Street Then we had the horrors of trench warfare and WWI. Dada was a nonsense movement in reaction to that waste (when 20,000 men could die to gain a few yards of land). Artists in New York, Paris, Berlin and Switzerland created nonsensical art that reacted against the previously rational art that had led to WWI. Dada either means hobbyhorse or the first words a baby speaks. Or, it is said, perhaps what happened is this: a blindfolded representative opened a dictionary and stabbed the first word. Either way, it is still (purposely) nonsensical. Arp a collage with torn paper This is also the time when Marcel Duchamp, a French artist visiting the U.S., exhibited Fountain below. Conclusion
Duchamp fell in and out of favor with the avant-garde several times over the course of his long career. Pontus Hulten has traced the way Duchamp's name and his works have been appropriated by various groups. This phenomenon began at least as early as 1915, when Duchamp's first stay in the US had galvanized the members of the Arensberg Circle and stimulated the appearance of the New York Dada movement. Following the Surrealists' attempts at bringing Duchamp into their group, the artist's name was rehabilitated in the 1950's by the so-called "Neo-Dada" movement that included Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and others. The beginning of Duchamp's "rediscovery" by the art world in that decade was due to a renewed interest in his Dada activities. These artists drew inspiration especially from Duchamp's readymades, using them as the basis for new ideas about sculpture. Robert Motherwell's 1951 anthology The Dada Painters and Poets , and Sidney Janis's 1953 exhibition "Dada 1916-1923" (with which Duchamp assisted) also contributed to the artist's new visibility, often apparently eclipsing the connections Duchamp had formed with Surrealism in the 1940's.

Alfred H. Barr, Jr., founding Director of The Museum of Modern Art, wrote in the introduction to the catalogue for Cubism and Abstract Art (MoMA Exh. #46, March 2-April 19, 1936) that the exhibition was "intended as an historical survey of an important movement in modern art." It was the first in a series of five exhibitions that were curated between 1936 and 1943 devoted to the principal movements in modern art. The series also included Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism (MoMA Exh. #55, December 7, 1936-January 17, 1937) and Romantic Painting in America (MoMA Exh. #246, November 11, 1943-February 6, 1944). This chart, hand-drawn by Barr, illustrates the historical development, currents and crosscurrents of modern art. It was a working draft of the first version of the chart that would appear on the dust jacket of the catalogue for
